Cavaliers send Varejao home early due to injury

After a couple of weeks of good health, injuries are starting to pile up for the Cavaliers.

Forward-center Anderson Varejao has returned home from the team's West Coast trip after suffering a sprained left ankle Sunday. This comes less than a week after losing starting guard Sasha Pavlovic for six to eight weeks with a sprained left foot.

Varejao leads all NBA reserves by averaging 8.5 rebounds. The Cavs remain uncertain on how much time he will miss.

X-rays taken at the arena Sunday were negative after the 6-foot-10 Varejao suffered a left ankle sprain during the third quarter of a win over the Lakers in Los Angeles. He received an MRI on Monday in L.A., the results of which showed no additional injury beyond the sprain. He continued to receive treatment in L.A. before returning this morning to Cleveland to be further evaluated. The team has not established a timeline for his return.

Have we really drafted that bad the past couple times we have had draft picks...

Yes Jamar Nelson was out there when we drafted Jackson and I would of loved to have drafted him, but Jackson was troubled by back trouble, not really by his game not being any good...

And you know my feelings on Shannon Brown...We also stole Boobie in the second round of that draft...

Jackson and Brown didn't look like bad picks when they made them, but neither player has panned out. The Cavs have actually done a better job with second round picks in the Lebron era getting Boobie and Kapono.

Well, you have to do well with your second rounders if you're going to trade your first rounders for guys like Jiri F. Welsch. If it takes throwing in a first rounder to get Kidd, I say go ahead and do it. It's not as if we're talking about a lottery pick here. This is a move the Cavs have to find a way to make. Whether it has been through circumstance or incompetence, they have failed to obtain or retain a respectable sidekick for LeBron, whether it was the lack of first round picks, failing to keep Boozer, or signing Larry Hughes.

I'm not one to beat the "LeBron will bolt in free agency" drum. A baseball metaphor seems appropriate though: The Cavs have got themselves into a two-strike count by swinging and missing and foul balls. They can't afford to strike out looking. They need to take their best rip at getting Kidd, and knock it out of the park.

Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James talks about Cavs trying to trade for New Jersey Nets point guard Jason Kidd to win NBA championship

LeBron: Get Kidd, get Cavs NBA title

Wednesday, January 30, 2008 Mary Schmitt Boyer

Plain Dealer Reporter
Portland, Ore. -- LeBron James said he hadn't talked to his good friend Jason Kidd on Tuesday, a day after the New Jersey Nets point guard asked to be traded.
James said he hadn't talked to Cavs General Manager Danny Ferry either. He didn't think that was necessary.
"When it gets to a point like that, where you see Jason Kidd wants to be traded, you shouldn't have to go to the front office and tell them to get on it," James said after the Cavs practiced at the Nike headquarters in preparation for tonight's game against the Trail Blazers. "It's Jason Kidd. It's not someone else asking for a trade. It's Jason Kidd. You shouldn't have to go to anybody in the front office for them to be ready to try to jump on it."

Cavs pursuing Kidd
He's available, but they might not have what it takes
By Brian Windhorst

LOS ANGELES: Over the last year the Cavaliers have been attempting to make a major trade to put another star next to LeBron James.
They made pitches for Sacramento Kings point guard Mike Bibby and Kevin Garnett before he was traded to the Boston Celtics. Now team General Manager Danny Ferry will probably be in pursuit of another, Jason Kidd.
After weeks of rumors in the New York-area papers, Kidd confirmed to ESPN.com on Monday that he's asked the New Jersey Nets to be traded.
''Sometimes, when you ride a wave, you get to the end and that's all there is. That's where we are,'' Kidd told ESPN.
The Cavs, in need of a point guard, are expected to be putting in a bid. According to sources, the Cavs' front office has been in contact recently with the Nets to gauge their demands. As with the pursuit of Bibby and Garnett, the team is not in a favorable position because it has a limited number of tradable assets.
Plus the Cavs are 12-3 over their last 15 games and have played better as the season has gone along, which might prevent them from tearing up the roster to make such a deal before the Feb. 21 trade deadline.

I just don't see it happening. NJ won't take a pile of garbage like Hughes. Gooden and Gibby won't be nearly enough, salary-wise to match Kidd's. Even if they throw in a 1st, I don't think it can be in 2008.

In the end, I think Dallas is a much better trading partner.

What exactly do the Cavs have in the way of expiring contracts? We would certainly dump those players on the Nets, and they'd happily take them.

There's no way they would take Hughes, and I don't think we have enough left on the roster that would earn a bite.

I like Lebron's thinking, but someone needs to sit him down and explain that a trade for Kidd simply is not possible.

Give him the ESPN trade machine and tell him to find something that works without trading Hughes. He'll learn pretty quick.
I actually think a lineup of Hughes, Carter, Jefferson, Gooden, and someone else would actually work pretty well for the Nets.

Hughes will actually be tradable in 2 years.
