Cavs 06-07 season thread

LeBron No. 1
Feb 10 - LeBron James has been named No. 1 by memorabilia magazine Beckett in its annual basketball Hobby Power Index. He had been fourth last year and unseated Kobe Bryant, who had been in the top spot the past three years. There is a large demand for James' autographs and other collectibles.

"In the past year, LeBron has established himself as the face of the NBA as well as the face of the hobby industry both on the court and off," editor Keith Hower said in a statement. -- Akron Beacon-Journal

Self-Promotion
Feb 10 - Never shy when it comes to self-promotion, Cavaliers guard Damon Jones walked Friday night into Quicken Loans Arena wearing an artillery jacket with a "sniper" shoulder patch.

Jones made his entrance a day after he and Heat forward Jason Kapono were selected for the 3-point contest at All-Star Weekend.

"It's just a symbolization, knowing Jason Kapono is in the building," the former Heat guard said with a grin.

Asked where in Cleveland one gets such a getup, Jones replied, "Everything I have is tailor-made." -- South Florida Sun-Sentinel

Cavs Eye Bibby?
Feb 10 - Among the trade conversations -- according to three sources close to the team who didn't want to be identified because they were not authorized to speak -- were talks between the Kings and Cleveland as to what sort of deal would benefit both sides. Mike Bibby has made clear his preference to stay in Sacramento and wishes the Kings shared the sentiment.

"It just shows what type of people you're dealing with, really," said Bibby, who is shooting a career-low 39.0 percent overall and just 30.5 percent from three-point range. "I just have to wait it out, to see if they're going to turn their back on me or whatever."

"If (the Kings) are willing to give up on me after one bad shooting year, then that's the way they are," Bibby said. "I think I've had pretty good years before this one." -- Sacramento Bee

Not sure what to think about this...

Guess it depends what we'd give up.

Bibby would be our second best player...

I would be willing to give up just about anyone besdies, maybe Gibby and Wild thing, and would like to hold on to Sasha the way he has been playing, but his trade value might be as high right now as it ever will be...

Completely agree with you, if the Cavs could get Bibby a guy who has some playoff experience and can really do some things at the point guard position then you give up just about anyone other than who CBF40 mentioned because he could really help this team out.

You guys think Bibby would be nice...check this out.

Cavs, Lakers Eye Kidd
Feb 11 - According to the source that provided the original, juicy news, the (Jason) Kidd conversation only briefly was deactivated. The way I hear it, Nets management is seriously considering accepting the offer.

The bidding isn't limited to L.A. I have it on excellent authority the Cavaliers - desperate to relieve LeBron James of his playmaking-for-others-and-himself obligation, and transform him into an open court, post-up receiver - called the Nets to voice their fondness for Kidd.

"I don't look for that to happen," said someone in the know. "Given the choice between playing in Cleveland with LeBron or in Los Angeles with Kobe (Bryant), I suspect we know which way Kidd would lean. You definitely don't want an unhappy impact player."
Obviously, if Kidd goes, Vince Carter must be dispatched, too. -- New York Post

More on Bibby:

Cavs Eye Bibby?
Feb 11 - The Cavs had trade talks with the Sacramento Kings several weeks ago, but sources indicate the talks are dead and have been for some time. There is no natural deal unless a third team gets involved.

With the exception of LeBron James, the Cavs made everyone on their roster available in pursuit of point guard Mike Bibby.

The Kings had interest in Drew Gooden because they need rebounding and scoring from their frontcourt. But the talks were mostly just cursory. The Cavs have had talks with numerous teams, but talks don't mean trades. -- Akron Beacon-Journal

Nice shot across the bow by Mike Bibby's agent, David Falk, this week. On second thought, Falk told the Sacramento Bee, Bibby might not opt out of the last two years of his contract, which are to pay him $13.5 million in 2007-08 and $14.5 million the following season.

Problem is, the Kings were not only expecting Bibby to opt out, sources maintain they were hoping he'd opt out. If Bibby opted out and became a free agent, and Sacramento subsequently renounced his rights, the Kings would have less than $38 million committed to player salaries next season - and become a major player in free agency and possible trades. -- Philadelphia Inquirer

Will He Play?
Feb 11 - LeBron James' assertion that his toe injury won't heal until summer, combined with earlier statements about needing more rest in the offseason, indicate he's leaning toward not playing for Team USA in this summer's FIBA Americas Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Las Vegas. The toe alone is reason enough to beg off, but he'll likely put pressure on himself to take part because he is one of the team's captains. -- Akron Beacon-Journal

Either Kidd or Bibby would be great, I would like Bibby even more, but at this point in time unless a 3rd team comes into the mix I just don't think we have the guns to get it done...

I would be more than willing to throw Snow, Sasha, and Gooden for Bibby and someone else, just not real familar with the Kings full lineup...I would prefer a wing type guy since losing 2 Sasha and we have Z, Wild thing, Donyell and Pollard at the 4 and 5 spots...

Or if we got the PF way we could see Shannon Brown get a little more time in the second half of the year and help his progression...

Bibby
Hughes
LBJ
Wild Thing
Z

That is a nice starting lineup with guys like Gibby, DJ, Brown, Donyell, coming off the bench...

We wouldnt be nearly as deep, but we would have 3 consistent scorers at the 2 guards and SF spot and have some nice scoring coming off the bench with Gibby being able to get the ball around to them...

Gooden, Shannon Brown, Snow for Bibby works...

Hughes straight up for Bibby works...

Either one is great IMO...

Losing Hughes might hurt, but I would be all for putting Sasha or Gibby in at the 2 guard, probably more so Sasha because with Gibby and Bibby you are going to be at a size disadvantage...

I would give up Hughes for Bibby. The only problem with all of those trade is that all of those guys have at least 3 years left on their contracts so I don't see the incentive for the Kings to make a move. Gooden and Brown are the only two guys who may be worth their contracts.

I agree that the Kings are looking to gain cap space, that is why they were wanting Bibby to opt out of his contract after this year...So maybe a guy like Sasha would be in the works to go to Sacramento, but that is also why I think that there needs to be a 3rd team involved to send someone to Sacramento so they don't have the huge contracts on their hands...
