Cavs 06-07 season thread

Bench brings balance to Cavs

Wins coming because reserves are contributing

By Brian Windhorst

CLEVELAND - The NBA season ebbs and flows nightly as heroes and culprits routinely swap roles.
Short of further endorsing LeBron James' candidacy for Most Valuable Player, the Cavaliers' first seven games haven't provided enough of a sample to draw significant conclusions.
They own the Eastern Conference's best record, but they've hit plenty of potholes already. Nonetheless, the Cavs already are encouraged by their depth and resiliency, the infancy of the season notwithstanding.
Several of the starters are in a rut, especially offensively, but it hasn't cost them a game as the reserves are running well. Though neither is expected to continue at the current pace, the mix is giving positive indications for the future.
During the Cavs' (5-2) three-game winning streak -- which they will try to continue when the Portland Trail Blazers make their annual visit tonight -- the reserves are averaging a combined 48 points per game.
The high point was Damon Jones' 29-point blowout Monday in New York, but Donyell Marshall, Anderson Varejao and Sasha Pavlovic have had moments during the past week.
``It's great to have a superstar on your team, but you need those role players,'' Marshall said. ``We have that makeup on this team. On any given night, anyone can finish the game.''
After an inspiring start to the season, Drew Gooden has made just one of his past 11 shots and has scored a total of three points in the past two games.
Zydrunas Ilgauskas continues to struggle in the new offense. He hasn't scored more than eight points in the past four games and managed only four against the New York Knicks.
Eric Snow usually isn't an offensive threat and really hasn't been lately, scoring six points in the past three games.
When coach Mike Brown has gone to his bench, he's gotten production at both ends of the floor. As the Cavs gutted out the past two wins, sneaking by the Boston Celtics and Knicks, Pavlovic, Jones and Varejao have been on the floor for the stretch run.
``Over the course of a season, there's going to be ups and downs,'' Jones said. ``That's what a team is all about -- being able to step up and make plays to get wins''
It has helped that the reserves are versatile. Pavlovic has played shooting guard, small forward and power forward during the past week. Marshall and Varejao can play power forward and center. Jones can play both guard spots.
Their ability to switch in and out of those roles helped when the Celtics and Knicks went small with their lineups, a tactic that numerous NBA teams are employing these days.
``The bench was a big part of what happened here last year, and we know it is going to be a big part this year,'' Marshall said. ``We're doing it in different ways, and different guys are stepping up on different nights.''
Dribbles
After his big game, Jones has a career average of 3.22 3-point field goals per 48 minutes. That is the second-highest average in NBA history for players who have played at least 10,000 minutes. The leader is Dennis Scott. . . . Tuesday was David Wesley's 36th birthday; today is Pavlovic's 23rd birthday. Each got a birthday cake after practice, and rookies Shannon Brown and Daniel Gibson sang Happy Birthday.... James on the Ohio State-Michigan game: ``Ohio State, 24-2, hopefully. I am very excited. Probably the only time in my NBA career I won't be taking a nap before the game Saturday because I'll be up all day.''

Seems much hasn't changed with Gooden. He's more erratic than a John Rocker fastball. I was hoping a contract and piece of mind would allow him to develop some consistency. Appears I was wrong.:(

Well if you are talking about tonites game, unfortuanately I can't see it in columbus, b/c they have the CBJ on FSN.

But if you are talking about the rest of the season he has been one fo the most consistent on the team...

No I was referring to the article a couple posts above mine...

After an inspiring start to the season, Drew Gooden has made just one of his past 11 shots and has scored a total of three points in the past two games.
I'm aware it's early in the season, but this is the same Drew as the past two years...a couple of good to great games followed by a couple of bad games. Hopefully he proves me wrong.

Well he has 17 so far tonite...

I don't think it is that bad of a problem, b/c at times Brown is playing the guy that presents the best matchup. We have 3 guys that can play the PF spot in Gooden, Wild thing, and Marshall...

Tonite Marshall has only gotten 9 minutes and has not scored...

Overall Brown is doing a great job so far of managing the minutes...Last year he was just playing Bron all game and not really doing a good job of putting the guys in the right matchups. He has learned a lot, and I think he is doing a great job as the leader of this team...

Weary Portland fades quickly. Hughes injured, but will be OK

CLEVELAND - The Cavaliers won a game Wednesday night, but perhaps more importantly they dodged a bullet.
Behind a routine yet excellent performance by LeBron James, the Cavs squashed an outmanned, youthful and tired Portland Trail Blazers team, 100-87. It earned the Cavs their fourth consecutive victory as they maintained the best record in the Eastern Conference thus far.
Yet it seemed like that result was the secondary positive news of the evening.
Quicken Loans Arena fell silent midway through the second quarter as Larry Hughes writhed in pain on the floor. Blazers swingman Martell Webster had fallen on Hughes from behind, trapping his right leg as he crashed to the deck.
Of course, most fans need no refresher of last season when a broken finger robbed Hughes of 45 games, further extending his reputation for being injury prone.
But by the third quarter, Hughes was back on the bench, albeit wrapped in ice, and the medical team issued a report that relieved the team and the fans. In an unusual move, the Cavs flashed Hughes' condition on the scoreboard with the description: ``Not considered serious.''
It turned out Webster had missed Hughes' ankle and instead rolled on his lower leg, causing a contusion.
``It hurt, but it was just the initial shock of it, it got tight and I wanted to stay down until it calmed down,'' Hughes said. ``I was able to get my leg out a little bit before he completely came down on it.''
Hughes' status will be better known today after he sleeps on it, but he said he was hopeful he'd be able to play Friday when the Cavs host the Minnesota Timberwolves.
As for the game, the Cavs took advantage of some circumstances in their favor. They were catching the Blazers off a tough back-to-back. The Blazers lost in Minnesota on Tuesday and didn't arrive at their hotel until the wee hours. They also were missing four key players due to injury, including Joel Przybilla and super rookie Brandon Roy. It also bears mentioning the Cavs overall have significantly more talent and experience, which always helps.
It sort of played out how that script would indicate, with the Cavs taking a safe lead into halftime and then blowing it open in the second half to cruise to their fourth home win in five tries.
James had 32 points, seven rebounds and seven assists and did it with just 15 shots. He really went into attack mode in the third quarter, scoring eight points on a 10-0 Cavs' run that pushed the lead to 20 points and broke the Blazers' spirits. He had a dunk, a 3-pointer and a 3-point play in which he absorbed contact and banked in a shot while falling backwards into a summersault during the spurt.
``He looked like the All-Star, the Olympian he is right now,'' said Blazers coach Nate McMillan, who coached James during the summer with Team USA. ``At times he overpowered us.''
Drew Gooden and Eric Snow, two Cavs who have struggled offensively recently, picked it up in Hughes' absence. Gooden had 17 points and six rebounds and Snow delivered a season-high 13 points. Gooden also had the responsibility of dealing with Blazers' star Zach Randolph, who had 26 points and 11 rebounds despite being double-teamed all night.
```Randolph's a load and he's active and they look for him every possession,'' Gooden said. ``On offense the ball was coming to me and it was up to me to finish so that is what I was doing.''
Dribbles
Rookie Daniel Gibson received his first playing time and got an assist, but rolled his left ankle in the final minute. It isn't serious.... No. 2 overall draft pick and Gibson's former Texas teammate LaMarcus Aldridge had his best game so far with 13 points and eight rebounds for the Trail Blazers.... Donyell Marshall had eight points and eight rebounds but he's 0-of-8 on 3-pointers since spraining his left wrist last week.... The Cavs had a season-high 20 turnovers, but nine came in the fourth quarter.
