Carter Coughlin (LB New York Giants)

Terror coming off the edge, closes quickly on the ball, blows through gaps, and explodes through the ball carrier. Really outstanding frame and will be a great LB after he puts on some LBs. Tremendous athlete with an aggressive disposition, I would love to get him.

I like that he seems set on making an early decision. Since we plan on taking only 2-3 LBs this year, it will be nice to know where we stand with one of our top targets early on so that we know we already have a building block in place for the positional group or that we can move on and up our pursuit on other targets who may not currently have a committable offer or who are lower than Carter in our current LB recruiting pecking order

Will be an easy kid to root for, whatever his decision. Great comments about OSU and can never fault a kid for going with his childhood favorite/hometown team if that's what he decides to do.

It's telling that with a small class expected at LB (2 or 3) the Buckeyes are still making Coughlin a big early priority. If he and Ferns commit, the Buckeyes could conceivably be done with LB for 2016 very early.

I like the Buckeyes recruiting angle here. If he wanted to be a doctor and got into somewhere like Johns Hopkins, he probably wouldn't choose to pass up that opportunity to stay home and go to Minnesota. So why not make a similar decision when he wants to be a football player and OSU is arguably the top FB school in the country?

I'm not a fan of that John Hopkins analogy as I see that as apples and oranges. Football to being in the medical field is not really equal. But I won't fault a kid that's a legacy to stay home. LB isn't exactly a priority this and we have a good number of options

It's not perfect and obviously not equal (because it's an analogy...), but I do think there's something to it and I like that the staff is working that angle (and Coughlin indicated it was something that had an impact on his thinking). A lot of kids will pick the highest ranked school they can get into in terms of academics or their specific discipline to get the best possible preparation for their future career. Why is this that different?

If it's potentially (likely?) going to be your career, then go where there are the best coaches, the best competition in practice, the best S&C staff, best training staff, etc. and don't pick a school just because you grew up rooting for them. It's an appeal to the head instead of the heart (which is likely with the Gophers) and if anything is going to work for the Buckeyes, that's the angle. That and the shot at winning National Championships...

Watched his junior film on HUDL and had some mixed reactions. Definitely will need some time in a collegiate S&C program and I think he would also benefit with working on his running technique with the speed coaches. There seems to be a lot of wasted motion that could be cleaned up to make him more efficient. Quite a few of the highlights show him rushing the QB and if that is where he is headed he will need some work on his technique. If he is going to stay at LB he will absolutely benefit from working with Coach Fickell on refining his technique. Absolutely love his athleticism at that size and he seems to have great instincts and can tackle through the ball carrier. Definitely a quality player coming out of a HS that churns out top talent routinely.

I think its a little more complicated then just going to a top ranked team, especially when legacies or home town teams are involved, and also knowing that you can to the NFL literally from any school in any division as long as you prove that you're good enough. I'd like him, but he's not a neccesity, as OSU doesn't need to leave the state for a large amount of highly talented prospects and we haven't been able to say that for some time. He's very talented but family will be hard fight. Not saying it's impossible, just very difficult

He won't get to hoist one of those over his head at Minnesota...

Not at all, I can only see Minnesota offering early PT and the comfort of staying at home and being a legacy. Oregon can only offer being able to possibly play and yet again lose to OSU and be able to get run over by Mike Weber or Kareem Walker in the future
