Can Tressel & Co. break the bye-week trend?

Jim Tressel is 1-3 at Ohio State after a bye week:

2001: at UCLA - L
2002: Kent State - W
2003: at Wisconsin - L
2004: at Northwestern - L

Now, you could argue that each of these situations are unique - each of the three losses can be attributed to all kinds of different things (Tressel's first season, The Choke :-(, Krenzel's first game back from injury, or inexperienced players replacing 14 NFL draftees.)
Remember though that the game at UCLA wasn't supposed to be following a bye week. The Bucks should've played SDSU the week before but the game was postponed following 9/11. The loss of a weeks worth of game preparation and a full game had as much to do with OSU playing as poorly as they did than anything. The originally scheduled bye week came before the game at PSU, which the Bucks choked away after leading 27-9, eventually losing by two points and giving JoePa his 324th win to pass Bear Bryant.

This is definetly the game that scared me when I looked at the schedule. Playing a night game in their house is never a gimmee. These guys find a way to play us hard every time.

I have 5000 vcash dollars for any BPer who will break into the stadium and steal the audio track of that damned lion roar. They will play that atleast 1000 times during that game...and I for one cannot stomach it!

A lot of places use that, including Northwestern. Actually, they were using it during the plays yesterday, too, which is supposed to be a no-no.

Another good point.

I think this defense can do anything. Smith can't put the ball on the ground like he did yesterday because the game could go the other way if our offense gives up points. Hopefully JT wouldn't hesitate making a change if the bounces go the other way if we continue to fumble. The only way we lose is if we beat ourselves.

Northwestern and their PA is rediculous. Their PA announcer acts like every play was just the biggest play the school has ever had. When they get a first down he sounds like he just crapped his pants. They OVERUSE the roar, and it doesn't have as much of an effect.

I respect the Penn State Lion "roar" it's used at the right times, it gets the crowd into the game...it's a part of PSU football. It sucks, becuase you only hear it when PSU did something good or the Bucks did something not so good...but I still think it's cool. I won't lie though...when i've been to Happy Valley, i've gotten sick of it quick.

Our defense looked really good in 2004 too when we shut down NC State. Then we had a bye week, and we came out to hapless Northwestern, and our defense looked very average.

Northwestern had success because they were able to run the football and because Basanez was able to buy time by rolling out of the pocket. The Buckeyes have allowed niether to happen yet this year (save Vince Young), and they won't allow Penn State to either.

Good point. I was concerned after the Texas game that our line/LB's were not getting to the QB when he started rolling, but we absolutely drilled Tate into the ground yesterday. Then I got to thinking maybe VY is really that good...along with his OL

Yeah...I have a feeling that Texas and Ohio State really may be #2 and #3 in the country...especially with our defense. Texas survived our defense...I'm pretty sure they won't see a defense like that until their bowl game (hopefully against us again :) ) haha!!!

Hey, we may have this trend going on, but consider this, out of the past three coaches, only Trussel has gotten us a national championship! I saw Penn State beat Northwestern and, after realizing that we had a bye week, began to fear a little. Penn State is better than they were in the past few years, but I think we can at least make it out of there with a win. I don't think Trussel should be canned. It's a long break, and who WOULDN'T be rusty after that?

Well, even then I don't care, as long as we win. If we lose to penn state, i will cry, if we lose to Indiana, i'll cry more.

Oi, omae...chotto Diane Neal no koto ga suki sugi ja nai ka?
