What is wrong with today's athletic?? First, you have the Tebow god-like plaque in uf campus; then you have a DAY in a week being commemorated to a $200,000 college quarterback? WHAT THE HELL are these supposed adults thinking?

STUDPID, STUPID.

On the other hand, do you see the common denominator in these incidents?

They had a "Mark Ingram" day last year so I'm sure the governor is just being a good politician and covering all the bases.

You'll probably appreciate the two stories I linked in the Auburn thread.

In the RichRod thread ScriptOhio pointed to a column on lostletterman.com - while reading that interesting discussion of the real missing piece in DickRod's schemes at AA I came across this .. which seems apropos for this thread.

How Two Super Boosters Set Up This Year’s Title Game

As Script might put it ... interesting read.

The “booster” has almost became as synonymous with college football as Gatorade showers after big wins. While most fans will tell you they hate them, many will grudgingly admit that a booster with deep pockets has almost become a necessary evil in the sport, especially with programs who want to win national tiles. Take, for instance, the two schools playing for the 2010 national championship – Oregon and Auburn. With the two most powerful boosters in the country supporting them, the Ducks and the Tigers owe a lot of their recent success to two men: Phil Knight and Bobby Lowder.

I'm assuming the story of the dark Nike and his showring of U of O with treasure is well known to all - but I doubt all are as well acquainted with Lowder and his winning ways.

Like Knight, Lowder is also an alum, a ’64 graduate from Auburn. Unlike Knight, Lowder made his millions in the banking sector, founding Colonial BancGroup, Inc. Lowder’s power as a booster doesn’t necessarily come from the volume of his donations like Knight. His power came politically.

:: ::

Lowder had allegedly set up an elaborate pay-for-play system to ensure Auburn got the best recruits in the South. Bowden alleged that it was Lowder who pressed Pat Dye to resign so that the NCAA would back off on the allegations that Lowder was paying players. Eventually it was Bowden who felt the wrath of Lowder.

:: ::

But his reign finally looks to be over. In 2009, his Colonial Bank became the largest bank failure in the United States. The bank was shut down and then taken over by BB&T. Now Lowder is facing millions in lawsuits from former Colonial employees. He’s also being investigated by the feds. With his term on the board up this year, it’s safe to say his power is slowly shrinking.
Of course, Lowder would certainly get the last laugh if he ends up orchestrating Auburn’s first national title since 1957.

The last raises my hopes that the truth may eventually become clear about Newton and Auburn ... With diminished power comes enhanced probability of a disaffected insider spilling the beans.

Wall Street Journal - "Newton's Law Set in Motion in Arkansas" - January 7, 2011

WSJ said:
A proposed bill in the Arkansas legislature is seeking to crack down on agents who provide illegal benefits to college athletes in the state, upgrading the offense to a felony, quintupling the fine to $250,000 and expanding the definition of "agent" to anyone who's trying to get money to or off of an athlete. (The father of Auburn star Cam Newton was found to have tried to sell his son's services during his college recruitment.) "We're hoping this is something other states will look at as well," said Rep.-elect David Sanders.

MSN chimes in - Auburn the champ, but for how long?
And after charging up several more rows, Newton finally found what he was looking for — his controversial father, Cecil Newton Sr.

Auburn had supposedly distanced itself from the elder Newton for trying to sell his son to Mississippi State for $180,000 without Cameron Newton’s knowledge in a pay-for-play scheme. But there he was with a hand wrapped around his son’s head as he hugged him and whispered in his ear.

“Who’s knows what went on or what happened?” said Auburn center Ryan Pugh, who witnessed the embrace. “But at the end of the day, that’s Cam’s father.”

...

But by being here, Cecil Newton Sr. was once again right in the middle of everything, as he’s seemingly been all season. It’s a stigma that Auburn’s tried to rid itself of, but one that was reinforced forever Monday night.
Following X-rays on his back after the game, an aching Cameron Newton climbed on the back of a golf cart with an Auburn official. Asked what it was like to embrace his father after the game, the official told him not to answer the question.
With a smirk, Newton shook his head and was driven away. Expected to enter the NFL draft, the Heisman Trophy winner likely played his last game for Auburn.

Any ideas when the next round of indictments are coming down?
Happy 4th Day of Blue Tuna Week!

Gilley hearing - tomorrow
Siegelman hearing - 1/17
Tapes released to defendants - 1/31

John Goff singing like a choir boy.
Pouncy & Massey in the Fed's camp now.

Looks to be a busy, busy month.

Got a question. Could an injured player not travel home with the team? If hurt could he not go home to heal? Just a thought. Was just wondering if Cam goes back to Auburn. Cecil made a fool out of Jay the man. Does Cecil take his boy home now?

This doesn’t need to be investigated because if you just use some common sense you will know what is going on.

Cecil Newton has dreams of being Bishop Eddie Long without the Under Armour shirts, he didn’t have the money to do the things to his church that he wanted, so he decided to pimp his son for the necessary funds.

No one is even denying that. The NCAA might as well stop their investigation, because they already decided to let Cameron and his dad off the hook and by the time they find the real evidence, Cameron will have enough money to buy 20 churches for his dad to be the next TD Jakes.
NCAA investigators have interviewed two Atlanta-area men Emory Wilcox and Eddie Norris about whether they were asked to or did deliver money to the father of Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton in connection with repairs to Cecil Newton Sr.’s church in Newnan, Ga.

Wilcox is listed as the contractor on a city permit issued last April for electrical work at the church. During an interview, he painted a picture of Cecil Newton as a man struggling with the finances needed to keep his church afloat.

“He didn’t appear to have money,” Wilcox said.

Before Wilcox got the permit, he called the man who recommended him to Newton.

“He told me, ‘You better watch him. Don’t let him again ahead of you on the money thing,’” Wilcox said. “His reputation wasn’t too good.”

Wilcox said he and one employee worked one day at the church last April and planned to finish the project the following day. But when they returned that next day, the city of Newnan had posted a stop-work notice on the church’s door.

“He wanted it to be a big ol’ church with a big daycare center,” Wilcox said. “He wanted to do all this stuff and I’m wondering, ‘Where you going to get all this money?
