Cam Newton (QB New England Patriots)

Let's play "spot the similarity:"

Cliffs Notes:

AU Board of Trustees is controlled by a bunch of good-old-boys, the most powerful of which ran a large bank that was seized by the FDIC and is now under FBI investigation for all sorts of misdeeds. Another BoT member/booster owns a casino/dog track in the state. Several AU BoT's/boosters were also on the board of the seized bank.

In the course of the FBI's investigation into improprieties at the bank, their wiretaps recorded several AU BoT members/boosters discussing pay-for-play schemes involving Newton and other members of the recent AU recruiting class, which was remarkably improved over the previous year's lackluster class. Schemes included slot machines rigged to pay out big bucks to AU players, laundering booster money through the casino and into player's hands, secret ATM cards from the bank in question, and funneling money from the university's fundraising arm into the hands of recruits and their families. AU recruiting coordinator Trooper Taylor also heard on wiretap discussing pay-for-play and how much money he needs to wrap up the recruiting class.

AU booster funnels $250k from a non-profit org. to Newton's uncle, who sends it to Cecil. Cecil's church is suddenly repaired. Cecil owns a small trucking company with just a couple drivers. After Cam signs, business picks up to the point where over a dozen drivers are needed.

AU knows they are SOL, but instead of sitting Newton for the rest of the year, they figure they'll try to win a MNC, SEC Champ., and Heisman Trophy and deal with the consequences later. AU's President wanted to sit Cam against UGA but was overruled by AD and boosters. AU was threatened with loss of accreditation (academic equiv. of the death penalty) earlier this decade, but was spared and given probation. The SACS (accrediting body) is not going to spare them this time. So not only is AU looking at a death penalty from the NCAA, they could also very likely become unaccredited as an academic instritution, meaning loss of all federal funds and obviously dismissal from the SEC.

Better than a soap opera.

The Auburn Board of Trustees is controlled by a bunch of good-old-boys, the most powerful of which ran a large bank that was seized by the FDIC and is now under FBI investigation for all sorts of misdeeds. Another Board of Trustees member/booster owns a casino/dog track in the state. Several Auburn Board of Trustees/boosters were also on the board of the seized bank.
In the course of the FBI?s investigation into improprieties at the bank, their wiretaps allegedly recorded several Auburn Board of Trustees members/boosters discussing pay-for-play schemes involving Newton and other members of the recent Auburn recruiting class, which was remarkably improved over the previous year?s lackluster class. Schemes included slot machines rigged to pay out cash to Auburn players, laundering booster money through the casino and into player?s hands, secret ATM cards from the bank in question, and funneling money from the university?s fundraising arm into the hands of recruits and their families. Auburn recruiting coordinator Trooper Taylor was also allegedly heard on wiretap discussing pay-for-play and how much money he needs to wrap up the recruiting class.
Then speculation is that an Auburn booster funnels $250k from a non-profit org. to Newton?s uncle in Michigan, who sends it to Cecil. Cecil?s downtrodden church is suddenly repaired. Cecil Newton owns a small trucking company with just a couple drivers. After Cam Newton signs, business picks up to the point where over a dozen drivers are needed.
The most recent story being reported by people such as ESPN is claiming a payment plan was laid out. Text messages from a representative of Cecil Newton were sent to a Mississippi St booster. The plan was to pay $80,000 up front with another $50,000 coming 30 days later and then another $50,000 coming 30 days after that.
People that are apparently in the know believe Auburn knows they are screwed, but instead of sitting Cam Newton for the rest of the year, they figure they?ll try to win a MNC, SEC Champ., and Heisman Trophy and deal with the consequences later. It sounds like Auburn?s President wanted to sit Cam against UGA but was overruled by Athletic Director and boosters. Auburn was threatened with loss of accreditation (academic equiv. of the death penalty) earlier this decade, but was only hit with probation. The SACS (accrediting body) would not be likely to show such leniency to this time if these stories come out as truth. So not only is Auburn looking at a possible death penalty from the NCAA, it?s possible that it could become unaccredited as an academic instritution, meaning loss of all federal funds and obviously dismissal from the SEC.

A conference commissioner can't boot a team from postseason play because a player might be ineligible. Slive does that and the NCAA finds Newton was eligible all along and the SEC is toast.

I think at this point, things are waaayyy bigger than sCam Newton. Auburn may be looking at trying to save themselves as an institution, not just a football program...

Allegedly...

Which is what makes the Auburn board so comical. They are still focusing on MSU and whether that could make Cam ineligible. They are trying to fix a leak in their plumbing and can't see that the house is on fire.

There is no secret bunker. :paranoid:
The real question is, if Auburn loses its accreditation, does that change the worth of an Auburn degree?
AUBURN, Ala. (AP) ? Former Auburn coach Terry Bowden said on tape two years ago that boosters were funneling thousands of dollars to football players when he became coach in 1993, a time when the Tigers already were on NCAA probation.
"They were paying players cash, $12,000, $15,000 to sign," Bowden said on a recording reviewed by The Associated Press. "All I was told to do was shake hands and say, 'Thank you. I appreciate how much you love Auburn.'"

Professors, former AD said Bowden told them of players being paid

Terry Bowden talked to more than a columnist about a system Auburn University
assistant coaches and boosters used to pay players even after it was placed on NCAA
probation.

The Opelika-Auburn News published Sunday a column detailing portions of a taped
interview in April 2001 with the former Auburn head football coach. The column also
included comments from former Auburn president William Muse, who said Bowden had told
him of the same system for paying players.

The list of people Bowden informed of the practice of paying players is much longer.

Now we know why so many college football programs are operating in the red despite lucrative TV and bowl payouts.
There is a cost of doing business in this sport not explicitly spelled out in athletic department budgets.
It's called hush money.
