Cam Newton (QB New England Patriots)

Once they hit 18, they are separate legal entities. The kid can run up his visa and not pay all he wants and it ain't his dad's fault - and vice versa. The contract is with the kid. His deadbeat no-show dad showing up and begging money should not get him kicked off the team and ineligible. More importantly, I don't see how they can penalize the kid for it absent him playing some part in the scheme. If he takes a dime, then yeah.

I could be full of bull on this one, but I'm struggling to see a way past the legal issue, even though there needs to be a way to stop scum like Cam's dad. I don't know how you get around the requirement that the kid had a hand in it somehow.

I am not an attorney (but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night), but if the player takes any money or receives any benefit from the parents then it could be argued that this benefit was a result of their gain through their association with him. In other words, he is receiving the same type benefit he would receive from an agent as opposed to a parent who did not make an attempt to profit from him.

Let's say all of it goes away. Auburn still can't celebrate. The glass football has been won but doesn't have permanency. What we, they, are enduring is the most unfulfilled title in recent history. As long the likes of Danny Sheridan roam the halls of Wynfrey Hotel during SEC media days, no true Auburn fan -- or media member -- can ever rest.

Emphasis is all mine in case you missed it.

In a strange way, we feel for you, Aubie. No one should have to go through the crap that has lingered since Cam was declared ineligible for a day last year. At least USC got to celebrate its 2004 national championship for a few years. One of the subplots of January's BCS title game was whether Cecil Newton was in the crowd.

So this ass clown is complaining about his own media machine because it happens to be about one of his adopted teams. He needs to go back to MIZZOU and root for the Catholic School of Indiana like he did as a child.

When the smoke clears, a scholarship is a contract between the kid and the Institution. While the kid can break it, I have a hard time seeing how some third party without agency/mandate can make the kid breach the K by their separate actions - unless they are approved by the kid or he ratifies it by sharing in the $$.

I believe the "kid" is generally a minor when that contract is first instituted, and as such is not legally able to enter into a contract, so its between the institution and the kid's parent/guardian, on a strictly legal basis.

I can't wait until the SEC/ESPN contract is up 30 years from now and some producer wakes up from a coma and asks: Whatever happened to that Cam Newton thing from 2010? Does anybody want to look into that and see if there's a story?
Hey, man, it's only like $180,000. It's not like he murdered anyone or sold his own shit or anything.

Still waiting.
You could have played this [Mark May] on the USC board for years and years before they got their ass handed to them. You posting "still waiting" every month during those years would not have meant that the NCAA was not pursuing an investigation, or that USC was not going to get post-season bans, titles stripped, wins vacated, or scholarships reduced.

All it would have meant is that the NCAA did not give a rat's ass about JCOSU86's self imposed time table for the announcement of the conclusion of the investigation. The NCAA does not have subpoena power. The NCAA could not have issued subpoenas for Tress's e-mails. The NCAA cannot issue subpoenas for Cam's dad's church. So unless Auburn self reports Gene's e-mail confirming the 180K to Cam because of an internal search revelation, they have to wait for other ways to track it down.

The lack of the ability to compel people is a problem. See Pryor telling the NCAA to stuff it. See Bush saying stuff it. See Cam saying stuff it. See <insert player> telling the NCAA to stuff it. The NCAA rules are the rules, and a delay in getting the goods on bad guys - like in the Cam situation - is as often the result of the weak investigatory power that the NCAA wields as it is a blind eye to misconduct. I keep telling you - if any Bama fan can dig it up, they will. Sit tight and it will work itself out.

I hate posting these updates, b/c nothing ever seems to happen, but that "10" story is supposedly dropping this week.

Kirk McNair, Alabama Insider, is saying tomorrow even.

But that just means I'll get my hopes up, and nothing will happen....
