So, I'm doing my yearly push of trying to convince my dad to drop Cox Cable and get DirecTV mostly so we can finally watch the BTN down here in Florida...for people who have DirecTV, how is it? How much are you paying a month and what package do you have?

I also want Sunday ticket and like that the first year is free

Cox? I thought Florida was Comcast/Xfinity territory.

FWIW, those I know down here that have either Dish or Direct TV always complain when the storms go through about dropping signal. I stayed with cable for pretty much that reason.

yep, yep, yep all it takes is a good thunderstorm or a strong wind depending on the stability on your mount and you're without TV.

Funny that is precisely why I prefer DirecTV, in Ohio anyway. It infrequently goes out for a minute or two.

In dublin oh, Time Warner cable dropped more often and would be out for long stretches,,not just a few minutes.

I don't have either service anymore, I got tired of paying for the crap they were serving me. If I want to watch a game there's plenty of places for me to go. It's actually worked out well, it's fun watching games out with others rather than turning into a caveman every Saturday.

just did a lot of math crunching and it looks like over a 24 month period I would save $169 by going with the 2nd highest package on DirecTV

Let me ask you guys this that have DirecTV, if something goes wrong with Controller or one of the boxes how do you get it fixed? The one good thing with Cox was I could just drive to one of their stores and just walk up and trade in my receiver or controller and they'd hand me a new one

I have had a total of one malfunction in 15 years. I never miss a Buckeye football game!
Like most electronics, if it doesn't blow up in the first week, it will keep on truckin' likely for a long time. I have broken a remote once :paranoid:.
And I have never had service issues. Now, if it rains hard enough your service will cut out for a bit. Or if your dish gets covered with snow(coat your dish with a clear silicon spray) or obstructed you will have no signal till the blockage is fixed.(snow cleaned off) Sure you can't drive to a DirecTV store, but Best Buy is still selling boxes I believe. And you can usually get a receiver or remote from a DirecTV truck/installer.
Personally, I don't find the premium movie channels worthwhile. YMMV
What I do love is HD service for my HD tv! Amazing picture quality for HD broadcasts. I also installed a electricity line filter to clean my power.

They mail you a new one and you ship back the broken one. They do have tech guys who can come swap it out but that depends on their availability.

Mark it DirectTV, Dude.

Don't, however, get Dish. They're shedding all kinds of good networks (AMC and BTN) in money plays. Either they're in money trouble or they're working they're playing games with their books in anticipation of selling.
