It's OK. I won't mind. You can remove this, too.

You know, funny you mentioned that. For some reason their commercial they ran in the NBC Sports app during the Olympics was in SD or worse, and the first time it ran I was like "Oh come on, don't bump me down to a crap resolution!" The next commercial was fine, and then after a few more times I realized it was the commercial and not my stream. Someone really screwed up with that commercial.

My favorite is the "Sunsetter" or something like that. It is the artificial roof thingy you put up on your porch. They still run the exact same commercial from the 80s, complete with poor resolution and bad clothing, and just voiceover the price and things that have changed, and the voiceover is bad.

To stay relevant, this is the kind of thing you see on over the air TV when you cut cords.

My one year discount with TWC is almost up, paying $158 a month for all channels and dvr with 30mbps internet. Plus I have Netflix and Amazon Prime. Cincinnati Bell just made Fioptics available in my neighborhood. I have 2 Rokus already. Seriously thinking of switching to Fioptics + Vue. I can probably get by with 20mbps since I live alone. That will be $47.98 per month. Vue core is $34.99 and covers almost everything I currently watch. $82.97 total. That's almost half off. Plus I can save $35 a month if I switch my alarm system monitoring over to Cincinnati Bell. Cutting over $100 a month would be nice. Gives me a little room if I need to bump up the internet speed or add a service like CBS All Access.

I started Vue at the beginning of the football season. I'm very happy with it. I took the middle package, too--the $35. About the only cable channel they don't include that I'd watch is BBCAmerica--they have some good series from time to time. You don't get the three major broadcast channels, but a cheap antenna will cover that. It only rarely reloads, picture looks good, only small annoyance is that for some reason on a few channels (SyFy, notably) I will sometimes click on a show and get a message that it isn't approved for streaming. Don't really understand that one. Seems like either you're paying to get the channel or you aren't. But, I basically took Vue so I could watch the college football season, and they carry about everything. Plus, you can log in online for ESPiN, BTN, etc. to watch on your pc or other devices.

Bear in mind, you may also be able to get an offer from another provider and just threaten to leave TWC. You should end up connected with a "specialist" who may offer you a deal worth taking.

BTW, offer started showing up this week on my Roku: 2 months of free trial for Hulu.

I recently switched from Sling to Vue. I would echo what LostLassie said. More reliable than Sling - very few pauses to resynch the stream. I also got the middle tier - Core. But for me it is $10 more because it includes the local CBS, NBC and Fox stations live plus ABC on-demand.

The only odd thing I have noticed is that shows that I have recorded seem to come out longer than when they originally aired, 67 vs 60 minutes, eg. Makes me wonder if they are adding extra commercials. You can fast forward through them, but because of the way it FFs, you cannot see what you are skipping. In time I will get better at guessing increments of a minute.

So, got my email notice that the Time Warner bill was ready. Bastards have raised my rate (without any change in service) by almost $30 in the last few months. Called, and was told my "promotions" have expired. Also, was told that, because I still have some special bundling, that dropping basic cable OR lowering my internet speed would in no way reduce my bill.

Just got home from scheduling replacement surgery to try to make nice with the knee I rolled a motorcycle over on a few decades ago. REALLY have other things to do with my fricking time right now than spend it interviewing alternate cable suppliers, or negotiating with T/W over the standard threat to leave. But, it's that or pay the bastards more than I used to for full-on, all-channel cable and 'net combined.

Fucking thieves, I swear.

Edit: Meant to ask--What has been anyone's experience with buying your own modem vs. paying the bozos for theirs? I've always been intimidated by that little proviso that they will charge you if something goes wonky with your service and it turns out to be your own modem. If you have a good one, any brand recommendations would be appreciated.

Ask them how much money you'll save if you cancel everything and stop this ridiculous cycle of price gouging and threats. On the off chance that they let you do this without caving, you can just come riding right back in with a lucrative new customer package.

Feds Order Comcast to Cough Up Millions for Shady Billing Practices
In a win for frustrated Comcast customers everywhere, the FCC has ordered the vampiric media conglomerate to cough up $2.3 million—“the largest civil penalty assessed from a cable operator”— for sketchy billing practices.

The FCC announced the fine today. The punishment was handed down after the FCC received “numerous complaints” from consumers who accused Comcast of adding a bunch of stuff they never asked for to their cable bills, including premium channels, set-top boxes, and DVRs.

In a nice bit of schadenfreude, Travis LeBlanc, the head of the FCC’s enforcement bureau, called out Comcast for its very obviously shady behavior. “It is basic that a cable bill should include charges only for services and equipment ordered by the customer—nothing more and nothing less,” LeBlanc said in a statement. The FCC’s rules ban cable companies from doing this kind of thing, which is apparently known as “negative option billing.”

That seems fair. It's probably comparable to a month (or maybe a week) of profits earned from this nonsense.

Those class action suits only make $$ for the attorneys. I've gotten lots of notices over the years that I was included in one, and often they end up amounting to only a few dollars per month of reimbursement. On the plus side, I did get an AT&T settlement a few years ago for over $100, and my Acer tablet was part of a settlement for our first home computer that was an Emachine when someone sued them over I forget what--memory or processing speed being misrepresented.

As to little surprise charges, while talking to T/W about my new yearly-bill-with-a-comma-in-it yesterday, also noticed a "voicemail" fee of $4 for my phone (I have an answering machine) which I did not even know existed, so that got dropped. You have to read your blasted bill every single month or these scum buckets will screw you.

You know how "gullible" famously is claimed to not be in the dictionary? You know what word really isn't in the dictionary of major corporations anymore? Integrity.

I bought the Motorola Surfboard 6141 two-and-a-half years ago and it has had 0 issues. I paid $85 for it. So far, TWC would've billed me $300 (and counting) for a crappier modem. I figure even I buy a brand new one every single year, I'm coming out well ahead.

If you're on Time Warner, you just have to make sure the modem is on their approved hardware list. I'm assuming other ISPs have similar documents.

I just got a refurbished docsis 3.0 surfboard modem for 55.

I did try it once before and they claimed it couldn't be activated despire being on their list of approved modems. I just put it off for too long to try again. It was simple.

Also interesting, I upgraded my package from 2 Mbps to 5 Mbps upload. With the old modem, I went from 1.89 to 2.29 upload. After installing the new one, I get 6+ Mbps upload.

Thanks for the input, guys. I've occasionally thought about getting my own modem, but was paranoid about it going wonky and getting jerked around by the cable supplier on repairs.

I don't know enough about them to know if they are a complexly functioning device, or something simple that doesn't present a lot of opportunity for malfunctioning. Looking at Netgear and Arris right now. Some refurbs on Walmart that are very cheap--I'm always skittish about electronics that somebody else has used first.

Gave Time Warner the chance to offer me a better deal rather than dumping them, and the girl on the phone told me I had the best deal I was going to get. No way I'm paying an amount with a comma in it yearly for a package that doesn't even include expanded cable. They can bite me.
WOW has yearly contracts that are half the price, and even if they stick me with an install fee, the first payment would be less than the $89 for one month at my new T/W price. If I get my own modem, even cheaper.

Have I ever mentioned how much I hate these companies and their gluttonous price gouging?
