In any case, having made my calls to Time-Warner and WOW, it's way cheaper for me to keep my minimum service with T/W, not lose the deals I already have on internet pricing, not pay WOW a $50 install fee or have a full year commitment for much higher prices just to get me some football.

This is the bullshit right here that cable companies pull. I just had a big blow out with the customer service rep for Charter/Spectrum about my fee increase. They said my intoductory package deal was up. I said what intro package deal, there was never anything like that? I said remove the phone then, because I never wanted it then and didn't even have it installed. The rep told me if they cut me to TV/Internet that my cost would be more than keeping the phone. I said say what??!! I told her the problem was they have no competition in this area and proceeded to hang up.

The letter they sent with my new increased rate charge came complete with a number to call to add services....Are you fucking kidding me.......

Yeah, cable companies having a monopoly in an area is bull, and when they do have competition, looks clear that they are price fixing.

I heard some of that same crap when I called--about how if you lower your internet speed, etc., it will actually cost more because "package deal" blah blah blah.

It's pretty simple. New customers and quitters get deals. No one else does.

Embrace the cycle of quitting threats when your promo and contract expires.

Yeah. Threatening to leave for WOW last year is the reason I have the deal I have now. It went up by $8 a couple months ago, but still cheaper than most bundles.

Dude, no one else cares if units in these places have carpet or not. Your anecdotal evidence is worth as much as his, and has nothing to do with ditching cable.

Anyway, back to cord cutting...

Well, I WAS dropping in to ask something about Vue, since some of you guys were nice enough to mention it.

Since signing up (again) for a Sling free trial, I notice it's an either/or situation with sports channels in their packages, which is the only reason I added them in the first place.

However, it looks like the bottom-tier line-up for Vue has both ESPN & FoxSports together, which would cover most every game. I see the second highest price even includes BTN, so that's pretty much everything. True enough that going up to $35/month, added to my current Time-Warner, makes it almost as expensive as a full cable package, but Vue can be cancelled without losing the pricing I already have and requires no year-long commitment.

One thing I'm running into with Sling (which was also true in the past) is that the blasted thing freezes up or restarts quite often. I don't like paying for service like that. They have Vue available through Roku streaming, which is what I'd be using. So, for anyone who has Vue, just wondering about the quality and consistency of the reception, any downside? I'm thinking it might be something I'd treat myself to for the Autumn. (And yeah, I do see they offer a short free trial, too. So I could find out for myself.)

Thanks for any input.

Vue has been pretty good for me. Since the last update which added NFL Network I've noticed that the streams are seeming to hit a buffer point, sometimes in quick succession, but it appears like it may be a FireTV thing since others haven't reported any issues on PS3/4, or Roku devices. It has only stopped for more than a second twice that I can recall, and just going back and reselecting the channel seemed to clear it up. I had 0 issues during the 3 quarters I watched of the game last night, though.

I know I've said this before but it seems like a lot of work to cut the cord. Reading your guys' jury-rigging is making my head spin.

How about one less night out a month and just get cable?

It's like you guys are driving 30 miles away to get gas 10 cents cheaper a gallon.

It sounds like a lot of work, but it really isn't unless you want to make it so. Unless you're mainly watching the more niche channels on cable, you can usually do internet and Vue for a decent amount less, and you'll save more in no more equipment rental fees on top of the sticker price of a cable bundle. For me, I'm saving about $70/month cutting cable and dropping to internet and then streaming options over what my cable bill unexpectedly jumped to. Now, my overall monthly cost did still go up $60/month over what it started out as (when I was just paying for add-ons and the base bundle costs were mistakenly covered by my HOA), but I'm still saving $840 over the next year vs. just bucking it up and forking over $170/month to Bright House. Plus, it just feels good giving less money to these shitty companies that constantly behave badly, even if there is a little more effort required on my part.

The most work was getting my antenna up, and it really was more just motivating myself to think about how I wanted to set it up. Otherwise it was just running to Best Buy to buy a few devices and then a few more minutes activating them and setting up the main apps that I use to get the content.

Also, the substations you get OTA that you don't (usually) get with cable can be awesome. There's a substation on the CBS channel that carries a good variety of older shows from the 60s up through the 90s. Was watching The Munsters for a bit earlier, which I hadn't seen on any of my cable channels in a few years.

So, a great big THANK YOU to you guys who mentioned Vue. Didn't know I could stream it on my Roku (which I can--even works on the old one my dd gave me four years ago!).

Listening to BTN as I type. LOVE it!

Again, thanks so much for the idea. Autumn is looking much brighter right now. :boogie:

The great thing about Vue is that you don't even have to use the Vue app, as it gives you authentication access for most (all?) of the TV Everywhere apps for the channels that have them. I've heard that sometimes the picture quality is better using the WatchESPN app on whatever device you use for Vue than using Vue itself, and that if you're having buffering issues, the apps usually don't have the buffering issues (as it seems to be an issue with Vue's servers).
