Sling is supposedly getting BTN this fall

Hulu has *most* of the sports channels but is missing the league sponsored ones (MLBNetwork, NFLNetwork, etc)

YoutubeTV has dropped Sportstime Ohio (Cleveland Indians) in Columbus (and elsewhere)
A funny paradox about watching the Indians: To watch them on Sportstime Ohio on YoutubeTV you MUST be in the Cleveland area. To watch them on MLB.TV you MUST NOT be in the Cleveland area.

I have a Roku 4k and love it

Apple TV has a shitty remote, less free programming, and it's more than 2x the price of the top-of-the-line Roku. JMHO

Bite your tongue. I LOVE that remote.

Try adding an HDMI extender using Cat6 cable, HDMI signal is not ideal after 50', and we try not to exceed 25' - 30' in our AV designs. They even have HDMI to fiber optic if needed.

We have three units. One is a stick that is not used much. A second is a HD unit that is maybe five years old and a newer 4K unit that I got at Christmas. The 4K isn’t so bad.

I had issues with the 4K signal and my setup in the living room. It runs into a Yamaha amp (RX-A780) and then out through 100 ft of HDMI through a down wire chimney to the basement and back up a second chimney to the TV above the fireplace. For whatever reason the 4K signal over that run was garbage. I tried HDMI 2.0 boosters, different HDMI output settings, and other stuff to make it work. Failboated.

I plugged in the Apple TV and it automagically worked. The signal looks as good as the DTV 4K output for everything I’ve watched so far, less YouTube. But that’s an issue with Apple and YouTube compatibility. The test will come when we get football in the fall.

I did keep the HD Roku attached to the amp exclusively for Spotify. I can mirror both zones on that amp for music inside and outside or independently switch on / off the zones and / or switch inputs. So, it’s now just more or less a music streamer with a better interface than the Spotify integrated in the amp.

I’m a pretty big Apple fan and like the UX quite a bit. Having a voice based remote on my phone (Siri) is pretty sexy. Can’t bitch one bit about the Apples yet.

I only wish I knew of those options before we finished the basement a few years ago. I considered HDMI / Cat6 as a solution during this transition. Even had quotes from an electrician to run the wires if I hosed it up.

Turns out that it’s pushing signal fine, even with that run with the Apple. Frankly, it worked fine for DVD and DTV as well. The only device that gave me issues was the Ruku.

Honestly, if I were to do it over again I would have stuffed the components in the basement wire closet with the rest of the network and relied on the Harmony hub to take over remote duties.

But yeah, anyone looking at long run HDMI... Cat6 is the way to go. Hands down.

Spectrum has been sending out these $49 per deals for internet and TV. So I checked into it since I’m paying $69 for their internet. By the time I got to a real price it was $138 for internet/silver package. I don’t think that was with a box, just streaming. Their streaming App is lame and it only works on ROKU. I prefer the Firestick.
Not sure about other brands, but the Spectrum app also works on Samsung smart TVs. I was going to do the same thing with Hulu Live, but after a lot of wrangling on the phone, I got Spectrum to rework my Internet/ TV Gold package ( with 3 set top boxes) down to $135.I still pay for Netflix and Hulu on top of that, but with the increase in internet I would get hit with, and the added costs of other services I use, the price ends up about the samee either way. I AM going to get rid of two of my boxes and just use the streaming app for those TVs. That will save another $16 a month. I have both Rokus and the Samsung, and the only issue I have with the Rokus is that HBO Max still isn't available on it. Hopefully they solve that$$$ issue soon.

I gave in and went back to Spectrum for TV today. I increased my internet speed and by the time I was done I am sitting at the same price as internet(lower speed) plus YouTube TV.

One thing that does piss me off is they force you to have at least 1 box. They couldn’t explain why I needed it but just I had to have 1. Also appears they are now charging for DVR per month.

Just went the other way. After years of wanting to cut the cord I found the plan that overcame my one stumbling block - keeping Mama happy. It took most of the 14 day free trial, but she finally climbed on board.

I am loving YouTube TV despite losing the Indians and Blue Jackets. (I look at this as a price war that will be resolved in good time. But it is worth it to me in any case to be able to thumb my nose at the cable companies after 40 years of their bullshit.).

Their equivalent of a DVR has some conceptual differences and there is a learning curve if you are long term Spectrum. But as I am figuring things out I have come to the conclusion that it is clearly a superior approach. And for those who are concerned about streaming services coming and going - YouTube is Google. It ain't going anywhere.

Walking into the Spectrum store with those two DVRs in hand I was smiling ear-to-ear. And when I actually unhooked them and was standing there with the cable in one hand I realized just what cutting the cord actually meant. No more drilling holes in the floor. I can put my TVs anywhere I damn well please.

As time goes by I am sure I will discover all the warts and pimples - just as it was when I first took up with the nacho bitch. (As you can imagine her gas is godawful.) But for now I am very happy and will still be close to $100 richer per month even after I add back some of the extras I had with Spectrum. As I type this I would go with Youtube TV even if it cost me more.

I need to go “negotiate” with spectrum... I’m at full price for internet and i feel dirty..I feel like the only way to get cheaper will be to end up adding tv back which i wont watch... fucking hate this shit.. i have 0 other options...I feel like there’s a political joke in here.. but i’ll save it for another thread

The key to cutting the cord is to get a good deal on an ISP. If your only options are Spectrum and AT&T you are pretty much screwed. Luckily I have WOW as well. I currently get 100 Mbps for $40 and I think their newest deal is 200 Mbps for $35. Those are all 1-2 year deals, but there is no contract so I just have to call in when the price goes up and get another deal. WOW seems to be content being an ISP over a cable company. I have SlingTV so my only issues have been with BTN, STO and Fox Sport. Luckily WOW isn't blocking cable so I get those channels in SD. I think I could save $12 a month if I could convince my wife to watch her stupid Hallmark shit in SD. Kids don't need Nick Jr anymore and I have Disney+.

A bunch of my neighbors are using something called the Beast on rooted Fire sticks. It probably isn't legal, but I don't know if it's something an end user would get in trouble for if anyone wants to try it out.

Good luck. In my area there's no such thing as negotiating with them. If you say "Oh, well I think I'll drop cable/internet to save some money" their response is basically "Good luck, because we have you over a barrel." The options are Spectrum or the Spectrum reseller which is the same price or sometimes more expensive, and you have to not be a customer for at least 6 months before they'll offer you new customer pricing. If you drop cable they jack up the internet price, and they know you have nowhere else to go for internet, so...fuck you basically.

I dropped cable years ago...when they had just taken over... my only other option is Frontier DSL ... for now.. hopefully they get off their asses and buy a FIOS network. sad sad thing is ... ATT has fiber running right outside the subdivision

The wife isn’t liking Spectrum and wants to go back to YouTube TV. She liked how we had the menu customized and hates the Spectrum remote. Plus I’m not paying extra for DVR which was free from YouTube.

Me on the flip side is considering leaving Verizon and going to Spectrum’s mobile service. That could easily save me ~$100 a month.

BTW - One of the show stoppers with my wife was the Hallmark Channel, which is only available with a couple of streamers. I was able to find it in an app called FRNDLY that is about $6 per month.

Also, one of my points of irritation with Spectrum is that they wanted to raise my rate if I dropped my home phone. My home phone served two functions. It helped me in finding my cell phone when I misplaced it around the house (rarely more than twice a day) and it made sure I never napped for more than 5 minutes.

Thanks to an app called "textnow" I can make my cell ring from my laptop. I will just have to live with the longer naps.

I'm assuming things have changed now, but in my old neighborhood TWC had normal speeds and the DSL option maxed out at 3 Mbps since they didn't have fiber in the neighborhood. That was probably only 8 years ago. I'm glad I bumped my link from 30-100 Mbps before the kids had to do school from home.
