Sarikopoulos goes home again
In case you were wondering, 7-foot junior Zisis Sarikopoulos is home in Greece again this summer, choosing to play for the under-20 national team instead of staying on campus with his Ohio State teammates for a summer of conditioning workouts and low-post mashes with Dallas Lauderdale and Jared Sullinger.
I got the impression after last summer that coach Thad Matta would have rather had Sarikopoulos stay in Columbus. I got the same impression this spring when I asked Matta whether Sarikopoulos was returning home again.
The day I asked Matta, he said they were still discussing it. Later the same day, I happened to pass Sarikopoulos as he was headed to the gym and asked him if he was going home this summer. He said yes, because it was his last summer to play with the team; there is no under-21 group.
I confirmed today that Sarikopoulos indeed returned home after spring quarter ended.
Agreed, it's never a bad decision to play for your country. Can't blame him one bit.sphincter;1723383; said:I disagree. He might know that basketball isn't his future and this is his last chance to play for his country. Hard to pass that up.

I guess when a University is paying for your education that should not count into the Equation . He had better not whine about PT next season.Buckeye Nut;1723456; said:Agreed, it's never a bad decision to play for your country. Can't blame him one bit.
Not really. He still has the right to do what he wants to do, a scholarship doesn't change that. Ohio State knew what they were getting into signing an international player. I agree it may not be in the best interests of his Ohio State future, but I'm guessing Ohio State isn't as important to him as his country. I also will not feel sorry for him if he doesn't get much playing time this year, which was probably likely no matter where he spent his summer. I wouldn't spend too much time worrying about where a guy who's not going to play much come Big Ten season is playing.LitlBuck;1723477; said:I guess when a University is paying for your education that should not count into the Equation . Sarikopoulos starting for unbeaten Greece
Taking advantage of good health (compared to last summer) and possibly his last chance to play for his country, Zisis Sarikopoulos has helped Greece win its first six games in the under-20 European championships.
After not playing in the first game, the 7-foot Ohio State junior has started the past four and averaged 9.3 points and 5.5 rebounds in them. He had 14 points and 11 rebounds in his first game as a starter.
Greece, the pre-tournament favorite, plays Russia in a quarterfinal Friday. The semifinals are Saturday and championship game Sunday.
He also said that he hopes Big Zisis Sarikopoulos will be able to contribute this year when he gets back from playing for Greece. They expect the 7-footer back in early August and camp opens September 15th.
double post double post:) this was in his "alumni" thread yesterday with a little bit of discussionScriptOhio;1736013; said:Re: It?s possible Koufos could be traded again before the season, especially considering the Timberwolves? depth in the front court, and Matta was asked what it would take for Koufos to be successful at the next level.
"You probably need to ask his high school coach that," Matta said with a satisfied smile.
For those who don't know the history, Koufos' high school coach, Jack Greynolds Jr., called Matta ?clueless? back in 2008 after Koufos went No. 23 overall to Utah. The 7-footer averaged 14.4 points and 6.7 rebounds during his only season in Columbus, but the Buckeyes failed to make the NCAA Tournament only one year after advancing to the championship game.
Matta did go on to say that he believes Koufos can be successful in the NBA as a big man with an outside shot. He also had a lot more to say about his current team.

Great reply.....
TheHoopsMarketZisis Sarikopoulos is back to Greece. The 20-year-old center leaves his country in 2007 to play in the NCAA, where he played for the UAB, and for the University of Ohio State during the last two seasons. Sarikopoulos, who averaged 0.9 points and 1.4 rebounds per game last season, has reached a three-year agreement with Maroussi BC.
