C Zisis Sarikopoulos (Tsmoki-Minsk - Belarus)

"After speaking with Zisis late (Monday) night, it was apparent the opportunity he had overseas outweighed the option he had at The Ohio State University," coach Thad Matta said. "It was a tough decision for him, but we are happy to have had such a great young man in our program for two years and wish him nothing but the best in the next stage of his career."

Sarikopoulos, 20, had two years of eligibility remaining. He played one season with the Buckeyes after transferring from Alabama-Birmingham in 2008. He averaged only six minutes in 14 games as the third center behind Dallas Lauderdale and Kyle Madsen.

With Lauderdale returning and freshman Jared Sullinger arriving, his chances for more playing time this season were uncertain.

"I don't know if things would change this year for me or not," Sarikopoulos said, "but I do know that it would be tough to get playing time with Dallo and Sully on the team. They are both quality players, and I don't know how the rotation would work.

"Coach Matta told me that the team thinks about playing 'big ball' this year. I believe that I will play more with the team (with which) I just signed."

Certainly a more mature response than "I only talk about Buckeyes."

Best of luck to Z.

Zisis Sarikopoulos leaves Marousi, joins Panionios - Sep 17, 2010 (by Eurobasket News)
Another bad news for Marousi. In just few days the team stayed without coaching staff, few players and of course participation in Euroleague Qualifying Round. The latest news is that Zisis Sarikopoulos (213-C-90, college: Ohio St.) decided to leave the club and he already signed a three-year deal with Panionios. It will be the first professional season for this young center, who graduated couple of months ago at the Ohio State University. He appeared in 14 games for his school as a senior, but with very limited playing time. They reached the NCAA Sweet 16. Sarikopoulos posted averaged of 0.9 points and 1.4 rebounds.

Zisis Sarikopoulos started basketball career with Olympiacos youth selections, before he left for the US in 2007. He spent one year with University of Alabama at Birmingham and in 2008 moved to Ohio State. Sarikopoulos was a member of the Greek U20 National Team this summer. He helped them to win the Silver at the U20 EuroBasket in Croatia. For 8 games at this event he collected 7.8 ppg and 3.8 rpg. In 2009, he was a part of U19 Greece who grabbed the Silver at the FIBA U19 World Championship in New Zealand. However, Sarikopoulos had limited playing time at this event. In the past, he won another Silver and two Gold medals with Greek youth National Teams.

Zisis Sarikopoulos (7’0”-C-90, graduated ’10, currently in Belarus), who plays in Belarus was not able to secure a victory for Tsmoki-Minsk (2-8) in their last game. Despite Sarikopoulos’ very good performance Tsmoki-Minsk was badly defeated 88-69 in Kazan by the much higher-ranked (#3) Unics. He had a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 11 rebounds. Sarikopoulos also added 3 blocks in 30 minutes. This year Sarikopoulos averages 9.0ppg, 6.3rpg, 1.3apg and 1.1bpg in 10 games.
