Getting an exemption for a parents' surgery sounds specious at best, which doesn't even account for the fact that the breaks never seem to go our way. I'm sure if this kid wanted to go to Wisconsin or Michigan, he'd not only be cleared but have his career stats retroactively applied to previous years' teams. But that never seems to happen here.

I'm not that far down the conspiracy theorist road to believe some other school could get the waiver approved even if they were as far away from Indy as OSU or farther, but I don't think it has a shot unless there's something that we haven't heard about is a factor. I agree the argument for the waiver seems very flimsy.

Bell isn't going to play the 4 most likely. Matta's offense needs a 4-man who plays outside. But will be nice to have two big bodies with both having length, a little bit of college experience, and height at the same time. OSU hasn't had two 6-10+ long, athletic bigs at the C position at the same time (aside from this upcoming season when Bell may RS) since Matta has been at OSU.

I was speaking more to general trends that Matta's teams have pretty much always had a 4 who can shoot the ball at least from mid-range, and I don't think Bell (or Trevor Thompson for that matter) is a guy we will see shooting many jumpers. And most of the 4s that Matta has had regularly attempt 3s. So I think there is a clear preference for having someone with outside skills & like Q or Deshaun at the 4. They want to space things out and create matchup problems at the 4, as often the guys OSU has at the 4 are being guarded by guys that are either too slow to cover the perimeter or too small to stop them from scoring inside.

I agree with you all that this waiver seems like a longshot. I would say no chance, but the NCAA has been pretty liberal with these recently. I'm still putting my money on denied. No worries though, next year's team will have plenty of big bodies on the inside.

Bell is also a C. Just because some site says he is a 4 doesn't make it so. He is a 5 all-the-way in skillset and talents!

You will see Lee ( 6'9 220 ) and Amir ( 6'11 245 ) starting on the front line this season. Lee can play the 4 and 5 and TM has reportedly told him he'll start at 4 in place of Q and play the 4 a lot. Part of the reason he left TEMPLE was he was forced to play the 5 there and wanted to display his 4 skills for pro scouts this season - as well as win and make the tourney. He solidifies both spots and brings the best rebounding presence we've had since Jared.

I hope TT doesn't win the appeal. We have 3 SRs who can and will play C. No use wasting a year's eligibility on scrub-time mins only. Let TMcD have all those mins, and Amir and Lee play all the "real mins". I'd even rather see Lorbach take the scrub-time C mins than TT waste a year for that - it matters so little who plays those anyway. Bell has agreed to redshirt and TT should also save the year!

Transfer ineligible? Not so fast
Ohio State transfer Trevor Thompson reported on his Twitter account late Saturday night that he can not play for the Buckeyes next season, ostensibly because the NCAA denied a hardship waiver seeking immediate eligibility.

But coach Thad Matta and an athletic department spokesman said today that, as far as they know, Thompson has been denied only the opportunity to accompany the team on its five-day trip to the Bahamas this week.

“I think what he meant to say is appeal was denied for him to go on trip,” Matta said in a text message to The Dispatch. “Don’t think we have been told (the NCAA’s) decision for next year, but will check tomorrow.”

Dan Wallenberg, associate athletic director for communications, added in a text that Thompson is “not traveling to Bahamas (but) I don’t know where we are with (the appeal) process. May have more tomorrow.”

The Buckeyes are scheduled to meet with media before practice Monday. They leave for the Bahamas on Tuesday and have games scheduled against Bahamian teams Thursday and Friday nights in Nassau. They return home next Sunday.

Thompson, who left Virginia Tech in the spring, sought the waiver on the grounds that he transferred to be closer to his Indianapolis home and his father while the elder Thompson recuperates from impending neck surgery. An NCAA rules expert told The Dispatch in April that the waiver was not likely to be granted.

I have my doubts he will be granted the waiver to play this year myself and wouldn't object to that ruling. The hardship waiver transfer system was getting fairly abused recently. Still thrilled to have Thompson on board with Matta and the Buckeyes.

I know Trevor is not one of the most polished big men you'll find, but I did like some of the things I saw from him in the exhibition. He appears to have a good combination of size, strength and athleticism, and is probably the best rebounding center that OSU has had in a few years.
