The brains of the outfit

"C.J. thinks everything through, whether it's coming on a play out on the field or if it's a joke in the locker room. He thinks everything through to make sure he's right. He's just that type of guy." -- Cornerback Doran Grant

  • Devin Smith was a freshman in the Ohio State football program three years ago, and he admitted that when he first showed up, he didn’t know much about one of the older players, C.J. Barnett.

“Then the first thing I did learn about him was how smart he was,” Smith said.

The revelation came during a team meeting as Barnett sat there in his customary unassuming style.

“The coaches would sometimes ask a question that most people wouldn’t know,” Smith said. “Then they would go straight to C.J. and he’d get the answer right on the money.”

The smartest guy in the room? Barnett, now a fifth-year senior safety and co-captain of the 2013 Buckeyes, wouldn’t go so far as to claim that. But to borrow an inscription from the base of the statue in the opening to the movie Animal House, “Knowledge is good” as far as Barnett is concerned.

“It never hurts to know things,” Barnett said. “Even what you might call useless knowledge, it never hurts to be aware of things. I try to pay attention all the time.”

Ekpre-Olomu headlines Thorpe Award semifinalists
Posted by John Taylor on October 28, 2013, 11:14 AM EDT
Unfortunately, we’ve hit one of the surest signs that the end of the college football season is fast approaching: the beginning of myriad announcements of award semifinalists.

The first major national honor to release its list is the Jim Thorpe Award, which revealed Monday a group of semifinalists that’s 15-players strong. The award is handed out annually to the nation’s top defensive back.

Of those 15 players, just one was a semifinalist in 2012: Oregon cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu.

The Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC had three players each on the list, with the ACC and Big Ten coming in with two apiece. The AAC and MAC each had one semifinalist.

There are nine seniors and four juniors in the group. Florida’s Vernon Hargreaves is the lone freshman semifinalist, while Alabama’s Landon Collins is the only sophomore.

Last year’s winner was Mississippi State’s Johnthan Banks.

Below is the complete list of semifinalists.

C.J. Barnett, Sr. Ohio State
Deone Bucannon, Sr. Washington State
Landon Collins, Soph. Alabama
Aaron Colvin, Sr. Oklahoma
Darqueze Dennard, Sr. Michigan State
Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, Jr. Oregon
Kyle Fuller, Sr. Virginia Tech
Vernon Hargreaves, Fr. Florida
Lamarcus Joyner, Sr., Florida State
Steven Nelson, Jr. Oregon State
Cody Prewitt, Jr. Ole Miss
Calvin Pryor, Jr. Louisville
Jason Verrett, Sr. TCU
Jimmie Ward, Sr. N. Illinois

Watch: Former Buckeye C.J. Barnett Talks About Becoming Columbus Police Officer
July 6, 2018by Tony Gerdeman

Former Ohio State Buckeye C.J. Barnett was part of the 129th graduating class of the Columbus Police Department on Friday.

Barnett, who coincidentally was a safety, played from 2009-2013.

A two-time Academic All-Big Ten performer and a captain in 2013, Barnett was a three-year starter for the Buckeyes.

Barnett tallied 215 tackles in his three years as a starter, and 224 total for his career.

Buckeyes, where are they now? Catching up with C.J. Barnett

It's certainly an accomplishment to say you've worn the scarlet and gray. And for one former Buckeye? He's turned that uniform in for another one, and now he's suiting up for a new team, the Columbus Division of Police.

"Now that I've actually become a cop, the job is way better than I could have ever imagined," said former Buckeye CJ Barnett.

Barnett's been patrolling the streets of Columbus for a little more than a year. He says his football days have helped him handle the pressures of police work.

"This one is very serious, it's life or death. Where in football you don't have life or death, but when you're playing you kind of feel that way, " said Barnett. "If it's fourth and five, they're on the ten-yard line and going for a touchdown, you give that up, your season's over, right.... especially playing at Ohio State, fans don't really like that."

But fans do like it when you make great plays. One of Barnett's favorite Buckeye moments happened in 2012, playing that team up north.

"Their quarterback went to throw a pass, I think it was a seven route. I ended up reading well, just from the preparations, ended up being lucky enough to get an interception, killing their drive and winning the game, " he said.

COP TALK. Ohio State football players have been a very vocal and active part of the recent police protests, and there just happens to be a former Ohio State player serving on the police force which they are protesting.

There might not be a better person on the planet to speak with the team right now than C.J. Barnett, so the Buckeyes opened up the conversation.

And from the sound of it, it was a productive talk.

"Hopefully, it just provides a little bit of understanding," Barnett said. "The big emphasis was on I understand them, I hear them. I know they're frustrated. I know they are hurt. I'm frustrated, I am hurt as well so that was the biggest thing, just to let them know that I personally understand. A lot of officers understand, we understand what the world is going through right now."

He said he shared with players what police have been going through and his personal perspective working the frontlines. He also answered questions about why police might arrest someone or use pepper spray.

I can't imagine this is how Barnett ever envisioned a his Real Life Wednesday conversation with the team, but it's much more important than your typical talk.

The Buckeyes were lucky to have him when he suited up in the Scarlet and Gray, and they're lucky to have him now.
