Tom Archdeacon: OSU's Oden already the difference

INDIANAPOLIS ? He's still not in shape. He's only playing with one good hand. He's just a kid ? still 18 ? and nowhere near the player he can be.
And when Ohio State got him this summer he "couldn't walk and chew gum."
Those were the postgame assessments of 7-foot freshman Greg Oden on Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse.
The last one ? the one about the gum ? was Thad Matta having some fun with a momentarily taken aback press corps. "I'm joking," the OSU coach finally said. "I'm joking."

Oden should (and next year will) be playing at the professional level
Heaven forbid Greg Oden gets hurt. Heaven forbid the Next Great Big Man falls the wrong way, tweaks one of those precious knees, sees the chance to take care of himself and his family for generations to come undercut by one unfortunate move.
Will the NBA and commissioner David Stern, who took away any choice Oden might have had to eschew college and go straight to the NBA, set up a fund to ensure him financial freedom for the rest of his days?
Let me offer an answer there:
No.
A couple million times, no.
"I don't know how you can take a young man's right to make a living away,'' said Jack Keefer, Oden's Lawrence North High School coach, as he watched Oden's Ohio State Buckeyes blow out Cincinnati in the Wooden Tradition on Saturday at Conseco Fieldhouse. "It's one thing in football; nobody's ever shown they can go from high school to the pros and be successful. But it's been proven in basketball, over and over again, that a kid can go from high school to the NBA with no problem.
"Greg should have had that right.''

Greg Oden's father saw him play as a collegian for the first time Saturday.
Greg Oden Sr. watched on television from Buffalo, N.Y., as his son led Ohio State to a 72-50 victory over Cincinnati at Conseco Fieldhouse in the Wooden Tradition.
