C Greg Oden (All B1G, All-American, Defensive Player of the Year, Butler Assistant Coach)

Oden fan

Former Ohio State forward Deshaun Thomas said he's been working out with ex-Portland center Greg Oden.

"Man, he looks unbelievable," he said at the draft combine. "He's running. He's lifting weights. You might be seeing a comeback. He looks like he's ready to go. He's running, getting in shape. I'll tell you one thing. For a big 7-footer that's all he does, running and getting in shape. He's looking right."

Thomas said Oden is working out at St. Vincent's Medical Center in Indianapolis.

Oden, who helped Ohio State to the NCAA championship game in 2007, has had five knee surgeries in his career. The Cavs had some interest in signing him as a free agent.

The Boston Celtics still are interested in Greg Oden, a former Ohio State star whose NBA career has been derailed by three microfracture knee surgeries, but he apparently has been pushed to the backburner because he wasn?t healthy the last time team officials looked at him.

?We?ll look into Greg still,? Celtics general manager Danny Ainge told the Boston Herald this week. ?He wasn?t ready to play when we saw him last. He wasn?t ready to work out ? I mean, not like a real workout. We?ll probably check into that some time this summer."

In conjunction with the 75th year of the IndyStar Indiana All-Stars, we are counting down the top 75 boys Indiana All-Stars through the years. Selections are made based on the entirety of a career, not solely on high school. Here is No. 18:

He was ranked as the No. 1 recruit in the country in the 2006. A two-time Gatorade National Player of the Year. Indiana Mr. Basketball as a senior in a runaway vote. A winner of three consecutive Class 4A state titles, the final one coming with an undefeated record.

There was little the 7-foot Greg Oden didn?t accomplish in high school, putting together one of the most dominant prep careers in state history.

?Greg Oden, George McGinnis and Oscar Robertson are the most dominant players I?ve seen,? said Hoosier Basketball Magazine publisher Garry Donna in 2006. ?There have been a lot of 6-10, 6-11 players, but there has never been one like Greg Oden. The thing that sets him apart is what sets (Damon) Bailey and Robertson apart. They think the game. They make others better.?

Oden teamed with Mike Conley as the headliners for a Lawrence North team that put its name among the all-time greats in the annals of Indiana high school basketball. They were 103-7 in four years of high school.

?I really don?t think about being the best player in the state, because I feel Mike Conley should have been up here with me as co-Mr. Basketball,? Oden said in 2006. ?He meant so much to me and to the LN basketball team. He runs the team. Everything goes through him. I?m inside. I get rebounds and dunks. But Mike, he runs it. He does everything that needs to be done.?

For his high school career, Oden amassed 1,873 points, 1,058 rebounds and 341 blocked shots. As a senior, he averaged 22.1 points, 10.5 rebounds and shot 74 percent from the field.

Greg Oden, Heat appear to have mutual interest

MIAMI ? Greg Oden and his agent know what everybody else does. If the Miami Heat want to win a third straight NBA title, it might be important to get some size.

Oden is willing to help.

Oden?s agent, Mike Conley, told FOX Sports Florida by phone Friday that the free-agent center remains very interested in signing with the Heat this summer and the feeling is mutual. Conley expects to talk with Heat president Pat Riley when free agency begins July 1 about the 7-foot Oden, the 2007 No. 1 draft pick who hasn?t played in the NBA since December 2009 due to knee problems.

"The Heat need some size, that?s not a secret," Conley said. "Whether it?s in a backup role or whatever, he could help them. I know they?re interested in him and he?s interested in them."

The Heat won their second consecutive title with a 95-88 victory Thursday over the San Antonio Spurs in Game 7 of the NBA Finals. It was their second straight seven-game series after having defeated the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals.

The Pacers exposed Miami s lack of size as 7-2 center Roy Hibbert had a dominant series. The Chicago Bulls also pose some problems for Miami in the East with their size.

"The Miami Heat make sense," Conley said of his client possibly landing there.

Other teams in the mix for Oden include Cleveland, San Antonio, Charlotte and Boston. Along with the Heat, Oden, who played at Ohio State, has most been linked with the Cavaliers.

"He still likes Cleveland, but we?ll have to see what they do in the draft," Conley said of the Cavaliers, who have the No. 1 pick in next Thursday?s draft and could take Maryland center Alex Len or Kentucky forward/center Nerlens Noel.

Pat Riley: 'I like our team'

With a chance to three-peat next season, Miami Heat president Pat Riley wants to bring back the championship cast for an encore in 2013-14.

Speaking at a news conference Wednesday that lasted almost 45 minutes, Riley indicated that he does not plan on breaking up the Heat's core ahead of their bid to win a third straight title, despite the harsh luxury tax penalties the team faces in 2013-14.

"We hope to bring all of our guys back," Riley said.

One name to keep an eye on for next season: free agent Greg Oden. Riley recently visited with Oden and his agent Mike Conley Sr. in Miami. Riley said he would explore signing the young, but injury-riddled, center.
"[Oden] is such a young player and can be such a force that you'd want to monitor him closely," Riley said. "And we will do that."

Source: Five teams eye Greg Oden
Updated: July 2, 2013
By Jeff Goodman | ESPN.com

A source close to Oden told ESPN's J.A. Adande that the Cavaliers and Spurs appear to be the best fits at this time.

Oden, 25, has battled numerous knee injuries and hasn't played in an NBA game since Dec. 5, 2009. He is coming off his third microfracture knee surgery in February 2012.

Oden was the top overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft out of Ohio State, chosen by the Portland Trail Blazers one spot ahead of Kevin Durant.

Oden has averaged 9.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in 82 career games and has been working out in both Columbus and Indianapolis this past offseason.

Sources close to Oden told ESPN.com that he is optimistic he can return for the 2013-14 season opener.

Maybe for a chance to win a ring; however, the Heat are way over the salary cap and facing the dreaded luxury tax. They won't be willing to offer the salary that other teams might offer.

not only that, but the heat will be disbanding after next season. so, in the event oden gets a 3 year deal there, he will be spending two of those years with the corpse of wade, and the gay emu.

The Potential Rebirth Of Greg Oden
By: Peter Chalach
Jul 08, 2013

Greg Oden was projected to be the first overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft from the moment the one-and-done rule was changed to make the 2005 high school class the last to go directly to the pros. Simply, Oden was the best player in the draft at basketball's most important position, drawing comparisons to David Robinson and Bill Russell.

Oden's size and athleticism made for a really great one-two punch. Add in his ability to run the floor really well, his dominance on the defensive end, his ability to rebound and block shots, his soft hands and real nice touch from the inside, a developing jump-shot and a great passer out of the post and you?ve got yourself a really nice piece of you?re selected first overall.

The Portland Trail Blazers were fortunate enough to select him and pair him up with Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge, on paper anyway.

An injury-plagued career never allowed Oden to settle and really show the world what he could do. He played his last game on December 5, 2009, having fractured his left patella in a win against the Houston Rockets.

Three-and-a-half years of recovery, rehabilitation and training have given a young 25-year-old Oden another chance to prove his worth.

According to ESPN?s Jeff Goodman, there are five teams interested in giving Oden that chance: The San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics and Memphis Grizzlies.

that's assuming LeBron leaves.......50/50 on that, in my IMO.

Lebron will be gone or everyone else will. I don't see Wade and Bosh opting out of their current contract so it would rely on the Heat moving Wade (doubtful) or Bosh (who would want to eat the remaining years of his contract) to resign Lebron. Even if all 3 don't opt out of their current contract the Heat will have to move one of them for nothing to get under the cap. The only way I see Lebron staying with the Heat beyond next season is if he doesn't opt out. The Lakers, Celtics and a good chunk of the NBA will have max deals to throw at Lebron and will have a better supporting cast than what Miami is going to have.

Greg Oden's agent says talks with Heat to resume soon
CHRIS TOMASSON |
Published: Friday, July 12, 2013

The Miami Heat have re-signed center Chris Andersen. They have until Wednesday to determine if they will use the amnesty clause to release a player.

Then the next order of business appears to be going after free-agent center Greg Oden.

Oden's agent, Mike Conley Sr., told FOX Sports Florida on Friday he plans soon to resume talks with Heat president Pat Riley, who has been taking care of other business. He said Oden, who hasn't played in an NBA game since December 2009 because of knee injuries, remains very interested in signing with Miami this summer and he believes the Heat want Oden.

"Obviously, they've got a need there," Conley said of a center. "It's a situation where they probably can't go out and get a top player (with the money they have), but they can take chance on somebody like Greg and his upside. The exposure (of playing for the Heat) would be good for Greg. He could work his way back into his game. I think Miami is a good situation."

Reports: Mavericks interested in center Greg Oden, who will consider Dalla
SportsDayDFW.com
Published: 11 July 2013

As the Mavericks' search for a center in free agency continues, the top pick of the 2007 draft is available. The fact that Greg Oden hasn't played since the 2009-2010 season doesn't seem to deter them.

Dallas showed interest in the former Ohio State standout even before the Mavericks had concluded their pursuit of Andrew Bynum, according to ESPN's Marc Stein. Oden has just 82 games on his NBA resume, all with the Portland Trail Blazers. A history of injury problems have kept him off the NBA court for three years.

Oden will include the Mavericks in his list of teams to consider, which includes the Heat, Spurs and Cavaliers, according to ESPN's Marc Stein.

But how soon will Dallas know where it stands? According to NBA.com's David Aldridge, Oden may take his decision into August.
