In conjunction with the 75th year of the IndyStar Indiana All-Stars, we are counting down the top 75 boys Indiana All-Stars through the years. Selections are made based on the entirety of a career, not solely on high school. Here is No. 18:
He was ranked as the No. 1 recruit in the country in the 2006. A two-time Gatorade National Player of the Year. Indiana Mr. Basketball as a senior in a runaway vote. A winner of three consecutive Class 4A state titles, the final one coming with an undefeated record.
There was little the 7-foot Greg Oden didn?t accomplish in high school, putting together one of the most dominant prep careers in state history.
?Greg Oden, George McGinnis and Oscar Robertson are the most dominant players I?ve seen,? said Hoosier Basketball Magazine publisher Garry Donna in 2006. ?There have been a lot of 6-10, 6-11 players, but there has never been one like Greg Oden. The thing that sets him apart is what sets (Damon) Bailey and Robertson apart. They think the game. They make others better.?
Oden teamed with Mike Conley as the headliners for a Lawrence North team that put its name among the all-time greats in the annals of Indiana high school basketball. They were 103-7 in four years of high school.
?I really don?t think about being the best player in the state, because I feel Mike Conley should have been up here with me as co-Mr. Basketball,? Oden said in 2006. ?He meant so much to me and to the LN basketball team. He runs the team. Everything goes through him. I?m inside. I get rebounds and dunks. But Mike, he runs it. He does everything that needs to be done.?
For his high school career, Oden amassed 1,873 points, 1,058 rebounds and 341 blocked shots. As a senior, he averaged 22.1 points, 10.5 rebounds and shot 74 percent from the field.
