Greg Oden confident he'll return to NBA, could it be with Cleveland Cavaliers?

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Former Ohio State star Greg Oden is confident he will return to the NBA after his many knee injuries, but he would not venture a guess about whether he'll wind up in Cleveland.

"I'm worried about the knee," he told The Plain Dealer when asked if the Cavs could be a destination for him. "That's it."

Oden was in Columbus to take in the Buckeyes' 58-49 victory over Wisconsin. He has been living in Columbus and taking classes, but he said now that he's working out in his hometown of Indianapolis and splitting time between the cities.

Asked if he was playing at all, Oden said, "I'm just getting my knee ready so when things do happen I'll be ready to play next year.

"I'm still in the rehab process, but I'm it taking slow. I could possibly be playing at this point, but I've done that before and I got injured before, so I'd rather take everything I am doing slow. Right now I'm just doing strength stuff with my knees."

He said he was confident he would return to the NBA.

"I like how my knee is going, the way it's going," he said. "I still like the time I'm taking, just to make sure nothing happens. You can't predict the future. But if it doesn't happen, I'm happy."

The 7-foot, 250-pound Oden turned 25 on Jan. 22. He was the No. 1 pick in the 2007 NBA draft after leading the Buckeyes to the Final Four, where they lost to Florida in the championship game. But his missed his rookie year with a knee injury and played just 82 games in 2008-09 (61) and 2009-10 (21) before a series of knee injuries caused the Trail Blazers to release him.

He is now a free agent. The Cavs and the Miami Heat have been thought to be among the teams interested, but Oden said it was too early to start thinking about a destination.

"It's too early for me," he said. "Right now I'm just concentrating on my knee."

Asked when he thought he could be back, he said, "Whenever my knee allows me to be. Right now it's all about getting the knee right."

Re: San Antonio, New Orleans, Charlotte, Indiana and Dallas have been monitoring the rehab of Greg Oden and are in the running for his services, according to sources.

I think his agent (Mike Conley Sr.) is doing a really great job "hyping" his rehab progress here. But I guess that is what an agent is supposed to do to increase the competition and/or drive up the offers, etc. i.e. let the bidding begin.

:tongue2:

Heat on short list to sign Greg Oden

MIAMI ? The Miami Heat are on a short list to sign injury-riddled center Greg Oden, the 2007 top draft pick who hasn?t played in the NBA in more than three years. But the soonest Oden could be available to play for the Heat is next season.

Oden?s agent, Mike Conley, said in a phone interview Wednesday with FOX Sports Florida that Oden could visit Miami as soon as next week.

?We haven?t set it up yet but we want to go down there and meet with (the Heat) and get to know them and vice-versa,?? Conley said.

Although Conley had talked to FOX Sports Florida last year about Oden?s interest in the Heat, he had said on Jan. 10 he hadn?t heard anything yet from the team about his client. However, he said he talked to Miami president Pat Riley shortly thereafter.

?We?ve been talking on and off for the last two or three weeks,?? Conley said of Riley. ?They?re interested.??

Agent says Greg Oden interested in playing for Cavs
By Jason Lloyd

Published: January 30, 2013

Former Ohio State star Greg Oden is interested in resurrecting his NBA career with the Cavaliers, his agent confirmed Wednesday night.

?He?s a Buckeye,? Mike Conley Sr. said of Oden. ?He lives in Columbus. There?s definitely interest there.?

Conley said there is mutual interest with his client and four NBA teams, ?and maybe some others will develop in the next 30 days. Who knows? There?s a few scenarios out there that make sense for him.?

Conley and Oden aren?t under any pressure to get a deal done quickly since he won?t play this season. The Cavs have more money to spend this season than the Miami Heat, another team Conley confirmed Oden is interested in. Oden isn?t expected to sign with another team until after next month?s trade deadline, but Conley left open the possibility they wait until fall.

?Our main focus is on next year or the year after and what cap space looks like during that time, who knows?? Conley said.

will cleveland hate him if he spurns them and takes his talents to south beach?

lets not go through this again

I am pretty sure this is sarcasm but I will respond just incase it isnt.

NO.

unless he handcuffs the team while refusing to recruit other players/gives up in big games/fakes an injury/hosts a national show to declare his intentions while embarassing his home town/coludes with other superstars and keeps it secret while dragging your team along for the farce.

and I am not even a cleveland fan.

Miami would be good for one year, but their experiment is almost over. I'm assuming the best Greg will be able to do with a contract is one year and I'm sure the Cavs could give him more than anyone else. If Greg could stay healthy and be 80% of the player he was for 25 minutes a game he would be worth $5 mil a year. A couple big if's.

I'd be all for the Cavs giving him a 1 year deal for as much as it would take to get him to see what he can do next year. That would still keep flexibility for 2014 when they could be a player in the FA market. Are Bird rights still a thing? If so they could go over the cap to resign him after bringing in a FA.

It does sound like teams are less willing to stay over the salary cap than they used to be since the tax rate increases every year you owe it. I read an article today about how the luxury tax is going to eliminate the super teams and give the league more parity. A team will only be able to carry one or two superstars and will have to Moneyball the rest of the roster in order to have a good team.

Celtics talk with oft-injured Greg Oden
By Gary Washburn
| Globe Staff

February 03, 2013

Greg Oden has played a total of 82 games, missing his entire rookie season with his first microfracture surgery.

The Celtics are hoping to move up on the list of teams that interest former No. 1 overall pick Greg Oden after the parties met Saturday afternoon in Boston.

Oden, a star at Ohio State who was supposed to change the Trail Blazers franchise when they drafted him in 2007, has had microfracture surgeries on both knees and decided to take this season off to get them healthy as he attempts another comeback.

Even if Oden can come back, he might be relegated to a part-time player because of his health.

The 7-foot center has undergone the three microfracture surgeries and another surgery for a fractured left kneecap.

Oden has played a total of 82 games, missing his entire rookie season with his first microfracture surgery. He last played on Dec. 5, 2009, after sustaining another serious knee injury that cost him two more seasons.

The Blazers cut ties with Oden in March 2012 and he has been rehabilitating since, targeting a 2013-14 return.

Efforts to reach Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge were unsuccessful.

The Celtics finished the 2006-07 season with the league?s second-worst record and were planning to take Oden if they received the No. 1 pick in the draft lottery. But they ended up with the fifth pick and drafted Jeff Green to include in a deal with the Seattle SuperSonics for Ray Allen.

If the Celtics had gotten either of the top two picks, they would have likely stuck with their rebuilding plan and taken Oden or Kevin Durant ? and the second Big Three Era may have never happened.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Source: #Cavs prepared to offer Oden a 2 year deal with a team option for a third year after trade deadline

The Cavs are expected to offer free agent center Greg Oden a two-year contract with a team option for a third year after the Feb. 21 trade deadline passes, a league source said.

The Cavs have about $4 million in cap space, which they are preserving now for potential trades. Teams around the league don't want to sign Oden until after the trade deadline.

Oden has visited with the Boston Celtics and could meet again with the Cavs in the coming weeks, his agent said Friday.

Oden is living nearby in Columbus. His agent, Mike Conley Sr., said last week Oden has been to see the Cavs a couple of times already, but was evasive when pressed as to what capacity.

?Greg has been up there (to Cleveland) before and he?ll probably be up there again in an official capacity,? Conley said Friday.
