No more preps to pros for ballers like Greg Oden

Date: Jun 22, 2005

Tuesday was a busy day as far as NBA Draft news goes. The NBA and its union agreed on the framework for a new collective bargaining agreement, which will include an age minimum of 19. In addition, Tuesday was the deadline for early-entry candidates to withdraw their names from the draft.
</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=3>
It’s official. The 2005 NBA Draft will mark the end of the preps-to-pros craze as we know it.

The NBA and its union agreed Tuesday on a new collective bargaining agreement, which will set the age minimum for American players to 19, plus one year removed from high school.

Players who spend a year in prep school following high school will be draft eligible as long as they graduated from high school the previous year and will turn 19 the year they’re drafted.

Foreign players, on the other hand, must turn 19 during the calendar year they are declaring for the draft to be eligible.

Under this agreement, Lawrence North (Indianapolis, Ind.) center Greg Oden, the No. 1-ranked player in the Class of 2006 by SchoolSports.com, will have to play college ball for at least one year even though he likely would have been the top pick in next year’s draft — not to mention the No. 1 pick in this year’s and last year’s drafts.

Ditto North College Hill (Cincinnati, Ohio) guard O.J. Mayo, even though he’ll be 19 when he graduates from high school. Rated the No. 1 player in the Class of 2007 by SchoolSports.com, Mayo was projected as the top pick in the 2007 draft.

Had this ruling been in effect two years ago, LeBron James would have been ineligible for the draft. Same goes for all the preps-to-pros stars that preceded him, such as Tracy McGrady, Kobe Bryant and Kevin Garnett.

Tuesday’s ruling will go into effect for the 2006 draft. Currently, American players are eligible for the draft the year their high school class graduates no matter their age.

For example, St. Joseph’s (Metuchen, N.J.) center Andrew Bynum is eligible to be drafted this year even though he is only 17.

He is one of eight ballers from the Class of 2005 expected to be drafted June 28 after two prep stars withdrew from the draft at the 11th hour Tuesday, the last day early entrants could take their names out of the draft pool.

Both Mount Zion (Durham, N.C.) shooting guard Brandon Rush and DeLand (DeLand, Fla.) small forward Keith Brumbaugh decided to play college hoops, though neither of them have committed to a school.

Paperwork is still trickling in, and there’s a slim chance Westchester (Los Angeles) power forward Amir Johnson also took his name out of the draft, though it’s unlikely.

On the other hand, South Gwinnett (Snellville, Ga.) guard Louis Williams and Skyline (Dallas, Texas) guard C.J. Miles both reportedly kept their names in their draft even though neither of them have hired agents nor will be first-round selections.

Seattle Prep (Seattle, Wash.) guard Martell Webster, Lanier (Jackson, Miss.) guard Monta Ellis, South Kent Prep (South Kent, Conn.) forward Andray Blatche and Gulf Shores Academy (Houston, Texas) guard Gerald Green have all hired agents and are definitely staying in the draft. They are all expected to be first-rounders.

I want to say that I have felt we have been the leaders since a few weeks before Oden and Conley's official visit......I expected the announcement to come at the ABCD camp but it looks like it has leaked out early.

I will take this article for what its worth, but I feel its a done deal....when its announced officially, I will change the thread....

Greg Oden plans to play basketball at Ohio State University, a person close to Oden confirmed Thursday.

No immediate announcement is scheduled, but Oden and Lawrence North High School teammate Mike Conley are expected to make oral commitments to the Buckeyes in the near future. Oral commitments are nonbinding; the earliest players can sign a national letter of intent is Nov. 9.

Oden and Conley, both entering their senior years, could not be reached for comment Thursday night after playing in the Indianapolis Star Indiana All-Stars exhibition game in Richmond.

Reached by phone Thursday night, Oden's mother, Zoe, said no official decision has been made.

A dominating 7-foot, 245-pound center, Oden this past year joined NBA star LeBron James as the only juniors to be named National High School Player of the Year.

He averaged 20 points, 9.6 rebounds and 3.7 blocked shots in leading the Wildcats to their second straight state championship. In one game, he blocked 18 shots.

Word of Oden's choice came two days after the NBA changed its rules for the draft, requiring that players need to be at least one year out of high school. Oden -- widely projected as the No. 1 pick in the 2006 draft before the rule change -- has said all along that he wanted to play college basketball, narrowing his choices to Ohio State, Indiana, Wake Forest and Michigan State.

Conley, one of the top-ranked point guards in the nation, averaged 10.7 points and five assists for Lawrence North last season. He had narrowed his choices to Ohio State and Wake Forest.

Earlier this month, Oden and Conley took part in the USA Basketball Youth Development Festival in San Diego.

Shooting guard Daequan Cook, an AAU teammate of Oden's and Conley's from Dayton, Ohio, also heading into his senior year, orally committed to Ohio State this spring.

RICHMOND, Ind. -- The way the boys Junior All-Stars played Thursday night in their 109-96 victory over the Indianapolis Star Indiana All-Stars at Richmond High School, one would think they were the team that had spent the past two weeks practicing together every day.

Executing behind-the-back passes and alley-oops, the Junior All-Stars led by 15 at the half, and despite a run by the seniors in the middle of the second half, the Juniors' lead was never in doubt in the last five minutes.

"We played as a team," Lawrence North High School star Greg Oden said. "We passed the ball. We played decent defense. And all their 3s weren't going in, so that helped."

The Juniors' dominance of the boards also was key.

"When you get outrebounded 50-28, you're going to have a hard time winning," Indiana All-Stars coach Joe Buck said. "In the first half especially, I think they were a lot more aggressive in all points of the game."

The juniors, led by Oden, dominated the inside, forcing the seniors to take more outside shots than Buck wanted to see.

The All-Stars were 9-of-30 from 3-point range.

Richmond High School grad Dominic James, the clear crowd favorite, led the All-Stars with 26 points.

Adam Arnold had 20 points for the seniors and Jason Holsinger, suffering from shin splints, had 14.

Lawrence North's Mike Conley led the juniors in scoring with 24 points and had 10 assists.

Both Conley and Grayson Flittner completed some crisp, flashy passes to Oden, who finished with 17 points.

"We didn't play together this year," Flittner said of Conley and Oden, former Spiece Indy Heat teammates. "But we hang out a lot, play a lot together. I think our team chemistry lasted from years past."

Chris Kramer supplied the icing on the juniors' win, scoring 13 of his 23 points in the last five minutes.

The All-Stars' final game against Kentucky is Saturday night at Conseco Fieldhouse.
Oden finished with 17 points, 6 rebounds in 22 minutes of action...

I spoke with a legitimate source that is a close family relation to Conley and he said that even with all of the bad publicity over the bball violations under O'Brien, they still are gonna end up at Ohio State. They were waiting out the age limit, but should pull the trigger very soon now.

IndyStar is reporting from a source close to the family that Oden intends to verbal to Ohio State. Oden said on Thursday that his decision was going to come soon. No direct quotes from Oden saying he has made a decision.

Greg Oden

</TD><TD noWrap width=3></TD><TD vAlign=top>By Jeff Goodman National Recruiting Analyst

Greg Oden and Mike Conley could very well wind up at Ohio State, but a published report in today's Indianapolis Star is premature and could even wind up being incorrect, according to Mike Conley Sr.

</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
Conley Sr. is saying that both Oden and Conley have not made a decision yet and that they will attend college at the same school.

The typical thing to do when news leaks of this type is for the family and friends to deny the report until they are ready to announce. Its clearly Ohio State.<!-- / message --><!-- sig --><!-- / message --><!-- sig -->

Can't wait for the official announcement. What a recruiting coup for Coach Matta! This class, led by Oden, will put Buckeye basketball back where it belongs among the nation's elite.

If Thursday's reports out of Indianapolis prove true, it looks like the 2005-06 men's basketball season will be one to remember for Ohio State fans.

The Indianapolis Star is reporting that Indianapolis Lawrence North teammates Greg Oden and Mike Conley will issue verbal agreements to coach Thad Matta and Ohio State. The Star said the duo would make their announcements in "the near future."

This news comes at the end of the same week the NBA and its players' union agreed to make 19 the minimum age to become draft eligible. In essence, this new rule now prohibits players from jumping straight from high school to the pros.

Oden, a center, is widely regarded as the top high school player in the country, with Conley one of the nation's best point guards. They would join a recruiting class that includes verbal commitments Daequan Cook of Dayton Dunbar and David Lighty of Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph.

Scout.com: Oden report premature - CNN/SI BK

Here's the free report from Scout carried on CNN/SI. Everyone should remain hopeful, but let's not count any chickens until they hatch. Sounds like a simple delaying tactic until all parties are notified, but only 2 people really know for sure.

Greg Oden and Mike Conley could very well wind up at Ohio State, but a published report in today's Indianapolis Star is premature, according to Mike Conley Sr.

"The boys haven't verbally committed anywhere yet," Conley Sr. said. "They still like Ohio State and Wake Forest. Their plan all along was to make a decision shortly after the Collective Bargaining Agreement was agreed upon -- and they haven't even had a chance to sit down with their high school coaches yet."

The Indianapolis Star said a person close to Oden confirmed the Lawrence North teammates would be committing to Ohio State. The Star also reached Oden's mother, Zoe, who said that no official decision has been made yet.

Conley Sr. reiterated the fact that Oden and Conley would attend college together, which basically leaves Ohio State and Wake Forest as the only two legitimate choices.

I can tell you all from personal knowledge, unless something crazy happens in the next few days (like Matta leaving or something that far out), Greg and Mike will announce for Ohio State. It is a 99.9% done deal. (NEVER say 100% until it is official!)
