Dominant Mullens Has Canal Winchester Aimed At Tournament Run

In a frighteningly impressive all-around performance, Ohio State center-to-be B.J. Mullens almost single-handedly destroyed Columbus Mifflin last night in a Division II district semifinal. He led Canal Winchester to a big win at the Coliseum at the Ohio State Fairgrounds, advancing the Indians to the district title game next Friday.
With a Goliath like 7-1 senior center B.J. Mullens at his avail, Canal Winchester (Ohio) HS coach Kent Riggs knows he has a chance to make a postseason run for the ages. To do so, though, the Indians were going to have to prove they could hold up against run-and-gun outfits like Mifflin, a Columbus City League team known for its high-octane attack and fearlessness.
So the question for Riggs in the days of preparation for Canal?s Thursday night Division II district semifinal with the Punchers at the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum was to either play it safe and instruct his guards to lob the ball into Mullens to beat Mifflin?s fullcourt pressure or to try to completely thwart it.
He chose B, and it paid off early and often in the Indians? 87-56 destruction of their central Ohio competitors.
Two minutes into the contest, Mullens had 10 points and several press-beating dunks as Canal opened up a lead of 10-3. It grew to 22-5 as the Indians got clicking in all facets and looked the projected part of state title contender...
