C Byron 'B.J.' Mullens (Levanga Hokkaido Sapporo - Japan)

Congrats to BJ on being selected to participate in the McDonalds AA game. The game is usually too wide open and unstructured for Centers to put up good numbers, but hopefully he have a few highlight jams to tide us over til next year  with the way he gets out on the break, hopefully he has someone like Telfair who only wants to challenge the assists record and not the points and chucked 30 footers record.

Thus the reason why BJ never put up big numbers in AAU...It is probably going to be only putbacks or alley oops...BJ can get out and run...Would be great to see him have a block party like Oden had 2 years ago...

I was thinking the same thing, but as an outside, outside observer, it does not seem to me that BJ takes as much pride in his defense as Oden did, but it would be cool to see him send a few back early (even on goaltends) just to send a message.

I saw BJ last year live against Beechcroft in the game they lost to knock them out of the playoffs, but he was actually going real hard, and probably had about 8-10 blocks...And he was getting rebounds out of his zone and was great that night...I am hoping that we see that type of play in the tourney this year and he gets to Columbus...

I hope that he can learn to bring this kind of intensity every night. In the game that I was able to see earlier this season against Yancy Gates and Withrow, he was not rotating to contest shots at all, even layups that looked like he could have swatted into the fourth row. He wasn't going out of his area to get rebounds either. Hopefully he was just scared of giving Gates an easy putback slam on national TV.

With his athleticism its hard to think he couldn't get at least 6-7 blocks a night. Maybe in the playoffs when he has to bring it hard every night we will see a better defensive effort.

Canal Winchester, Mullens shut down Mifflin

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

In nine seasons as Mifflin's coach, Gene Caslin has run up against his share of elite players in the City League North Division. Andrew Lavender, Ron Lewis and Jamelle Cornley come to mind. "Yeah, but none of them are 7-foot-1," Caslin was quick to point out, referring to Canal Winchester giant B.J. Mullens, who put on a show for an Ohio Expo Center Coliseum crowd last night with 37 points, 18 rebounds and eight blocks in an 87-56 Division II district semifinal rout of Mifflin.

Dominant Mullens Has Canal Winchester Aimed At Tournament Run

By Jeff Rapp, Bucknuts Basketball Analyst
Posted Feb 22, 2008

In a frighteningly impressive all-around performance, Ohio State center-to-be B.J. Mullens almost single-handedly destroyed Columbus Mifflin last night in a Division II district semifinal. He led Canal Winchester to a big win at the Coliseum at the Ohio State Fairgrounds, advancing the Indians to the district title game next Friday.

With a Goliath like 7-1 senior center B.J. Mullens at his avail, Canal Winchester (Ohio) HS coach Kent Riggs knows he has a chance to make a postseason run for the ages. To do so, though, the Indians were going to have to prove they could hold up against run-and-gun outfits like Mifflin, a Columbus City League team known for its high-octane attack and fearlessness.

So the question for Riggs in the days of preparation for Canal?s Thursday night Division II district semifinal with the Punchers at the Ohio Expo Center Coliseum was to either play it safe and instruct his guards to lob the ball into Mullens to beat Mifflin?s fullcourt pressure or to try to completely thwart it.

He chose B, and it paid off early and often in the Indians? 87-56 destruction of their central Ohio competitors.

Two minutes into the contest, Mullens had 10 points and several press-beating dunks as Canal opened up a lead of 10-3. It grew to 22-5 as the Indians got clicking in all facets and looked the projected part of state title contender...

What happened to Mifflin basketball? They were very good a few years back... KILLED my HS team in the late 90's.

Assuming Winchester won their district title game, they will be facing my Graham Falcons, who had an impressive win against Taft tonight. However, I think our tallest guy is 6'1 or 6'2 :( In any event, the game will be at the Nutter Center, so I'll definetly be there to watch. The game is Thursday, March 6th and I believe it's 6:15 but I'll post it when I'm sure. I'll be sure to give my severly uneducated opinion afterwards.

It's cyclical in the city league. The only team I can recall never being any good is South.

You must be a pup. East and Linden were powerhouses back in the 60s and the early 70s. I just don't mean locally because they were ranked in the State. Sorry back to B J

Mullens and Canal Winchester take on Buckeye Valley tonight at 6:00pm at the Coliseum.....

EA Sports POY Tracker: Week 8

2. B.J. Mullens, C, Canal Winchester (Ohio)
A new age big man, Mullens has the agility at 7-foot-1 to make NBA general managers salivate. Throw in his smooth shooting touch and array of developing post moves and you have the makings of a burgeoning super star. And it's not like Mullens is all potential. With his team sitting at 21-2, Mullens is averaging over 26 points and a truckload of rebounds and blocks. He already had a 62-point game this year and also poured in 48 points in his first playoff game this past week. Look for Mullens to bring back the size and athleticism that Ohio State had in the middle with 2006 EA SPORTS POY Greg Oden last season.

40-32 halftime. Canal was dominating, then buckeye valley stopped yielding open 3s (to double bj), and hacked bj enough to slow him down

Edit; 52-40 canal start of 4th

Edit 2. 56-45. 5 left
