Amir Williams, a 6-9, 210-pound center from Birmingham, Mich., says Kentucky ?is recruiting me pretty heavy? and says he has definite interest in playing for coach John Calipari.
?They have a great coaching staff. They know how to get and develop guys to get you ready for the league (NBA). I think it would be a great college to go to and a great coach to play for if that is what I decided,? said Williams, who is in San Antonio to try out for a spot on the 12-member team that will represent the United States at the eight-team FIBA Americas Under 18 Championship there June 26-30.
?My goal is to get to the NBA and I have to look and see what coaches can send you to the league. Coach Cal is one of those coaches who has proven he can do that.?
Williams, the fourth-ranked center in the 2011 class by Scout.com, says good team chemistry is important to him, but he?s not worried that Calipari has developed too many ?one-and-done? players since he would love to be in position to have the same opportunity.
?A one-and-done is a great thing, but staying in college for several years can also be a good thing,? Williams said. ?I have no clue yet what I would do. I haven?t even picked a school yet.?
Among the schools recruiting Williams are Michigan, Michigan State,
Ohio State, UCLA, Pittsburgh, Texas, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Duke and North Carolina. That?s why he says rumors that he might sign in the fall are wrong.
?There are too many schools for me to even narrow down my list right now. It might be late in my senior season when I decide. I might end up at the wrong school if I rush. I want to take my time and make sure I get this right,? he said.
