Butch Reynolds (400M Olympian, former OSU coach)

Living here in J-ville Florida I am constantly bomb-barded by quotes like: "You have never seen SPEED like we have at Florida" Alot of these gator people don't even know who Butch Reynolds is and thats fine with me.

When I witnessed the great cut-back by Gonzales in the Iowa game, i quickly thought of Reynolds and his contribution to Gonzo's performance in this game. I hope on tuesday morning i can remind all the gators fans of this man named Butch Reynolds again and what he has meant to The Ohio State University National Champions of 2006. Go Bucks.

Was at The Shack last night for a few brews and a sandwich, when I ran into a guy I had shot the shit with about a month ago. He's from Tampa but played LB for Iowa in the early '80s (so he claims). Anyways, we started talking about the title game and the first word out of his mouth was "speed". Not "talent". Not "skill". Not "coaching". Not "ability". Just "speed". He then started saying how the SEC always wins the NCAA track titles, at which point I reminded him that Ginn won the national title in the 110 hurdles, and that Gonzalez is (supposedly) faster than Ginn in the 40. Let the SEC dipshits believe just as the Cryami fans and players believed four years ago...it'll come back to give them a bigger bite in the ass than a real-world gator chomp...

Up Close with Butch Reynolds
Friday, July 20, 2007

Ohio State has one of the most dominating football programs in the country. The team has strength from talented athletes training in an 8,000 square foot weight room. They have strategy from hours of film sessions in the WHAC auditorium. Finally, they have speed, and that comes from Coach Butch Reynolds. As Ohio State?s Speed Coordinator, Coach Reynolds said, ?One of my biggest philosophies is you can teach speed.? And if players want to learn from the best, they?ve come to the right place.

It's just a back handed compliment.
The perception out there, especially after the Fiasco in the Desert, that we are still not fast enough.
Face the fact that we are not going to get any national respect till we beat another SEC "speed" team. Or maybe a USC.

Not sure where you are going with this. Back handed compliment?" You do realize that was from Coach Tressel's site don't you? National respect? You do realize that the write is a senior communications major at OSU don't you? You may very well be right that we won't get any respect from the national media and from OOC teams' fans until we beat another SEC "speed" team or USC, but this article had nothing to do with the perception that we are still not fast enough. You're looking for something that isn't there. At least in this article.

Ok! I did over react.
I just didn't like the "no speed" comment in that article and went off/got pissed.
Can you blame my sensitivity to the whole "speed/lack off speed" issue?
That's all we've been hearing about even before what happened in the BCS.
And we're going to keep on hearing the same story till we show otherwise.
Sensitive? You bet!

Reynolds also needs to teach the speed guys that when they return a kickoff for a touchdown, get the hell out of the endzone and get over to the bench where you are safe... and don't let your teammates pile up on you!!!!

On several of Teddy G's return touchdowns, the closest player to him on either team at the end of the play was Roy Hall, so I know that dude was fast, too. Unfortunately, I think he is the one who jumped on Ginn in the NC game.

After that game, I wonder if we need a new team sports psychologist. Let's get that game out of our heads!!

That's not Reynolds' responsbility...that's the responsbility of the football coaches. If I were a coach, the first player under my responsibility that jumped on a fellow player--regardless of the situation--would be either benched for a while or at least run gassers 'til he puked the following week. We'd always feared what might happen in those "celebrations" and we ended up finding out the hard way.
