Former Ohio State track standout and Olympic gold medalist Butch Reynolds has spent time training a number of athletes across the state, including Ohio State verbal Chris Wells. OSU football coach Jim Tressel has taken notice of Reynolds' ability, offering him a job as an assistant strength and conditioning coach with the football program at his alma mater. Here is the release from OSU on Reynolds' hiring:

Former Ohio State track star Butch Reynolds, who in 1988 set the world record in the 400-meter dash and then went on to compete in three Olympic Games, is returning to his alma mater as a member of Jim Tressel's football staff. Reynolds will be part of the Buckeyes' strength and conditioning staff and will specialize in speed training and nutrition.

He fills the vacancy created by the departure of assistant strength and conditioning coach Mike Cochran, who recently accepted the head position at Marshall.

"We feel very fortunate to have one of the finest athletes in the history of Ohio State back at his alma mater," said Tressel. "More and more in college football, speed is the element that separates the good teams from the great teams. We have good speed on this team. I believe Butch can help us become a team with great speed. His knowledge and expertise will benefit all of our players.

"One of the things that impressed me most during his interview was his passion for Ohio State. He really wants to be here."

Reynolds, who presently lives in his hometown of Akron where he works as a personal trainer, will start his new job June 13.

"I am excited to be working with Coach Tressel and the Ohio State football team," said Reynolds. "The chance to return to Columbus and again be part of the university was an easy choice for me.

"My goal will be to enhance the speed, agility, mobility and endurance of each and every player through a combination of speed training, aerobics and nutrition. I can't wait to get started. Just the thought of running out of the tunnel the first time has me really excited."

Reynolds set the world record in the 400-yard dash in 1988 with a time of 43.29 seconds. He competed in the 1988, '92 and '96 Olympics, winning a gold medal in the 1,600 relay and a silver medal in the 400-meter dash in 1988.

Reynolds received his degree from Ohio State in 1991. From 1996 to 1998 he was an assistant track coach for the Buckeyes. He was inducted into the Ohio State Athletics Hall of Fame in 1995.

Excellent hire. Does this mean he can no longer work with CWells during workouts? Or will Chris not really need him anymore, as summer camps & HS practices will soon begin, followed by the season, followed by him graduating early and coming to OSU?

Yeah right I forgot about that. Was that during the '96 Olympics?
You're thinking of the 200m world record he set at the 96 olympics. Very memorable moment of those games, just a different distance. The 400 record was set at the world championships in 1999.

Back on topic.... great hire. Should only strengthen recruiting ties to NE Ohio.

This is such a tremendous hire. Speed training for current and future Buckeyes.

I also think that his recruiting ability (even though never played football at OSU) will be awesome as well in selling the OSU experience but in possibly tilting the scale just enough on those big undecideds out there with his background and accomplishments and what he will be able to show that he has done with increasing the Buckeye's speed numbers.
