Building a computer for gaming/other entertainment.

My work desktop is one that I built a little over a year ago. It is a Core 2 Duo 6600 @ 2.4Ghz, 2Gb RAM, a Radeon x1650, 2 WD Raptor X 150s, 1 DVD-Rom, 1 DVD-RW, and a 4Gb iRAM daughtercard. Runs Vista Business 64 with all the bells and whistles enabled, plus Office '07. Resolution is 1680x1050 high color to a 21" FP.

I'd like to know what your using specifically to monitor your power draw?

I have tons of parts, so just for giggles I'll throw together a similiar system and see what I come up with. But from the top of the dome, on boot alone with that rig you should be in the vicinity of 225-260 watts, easy.

Agreed on the PSU statement though. Bigger isn't necessarily better by a long stretch.

I am running an AMD x2 6000+ (125 watt). dual Radeon 3850HD's (crossfire). 2 seagate sata drives. a dvd rom and dvd burner. All of that on some standard 500w psu that came with my case. Been running that for prolly 6 months.

Have always done such, never had any power related problems. You are wasting money in general spending $100 or more on any PSU.

What would make a program (game) shut down randomly? No warning, just the program vanishing completely. The friend I've mentioned in this thread is having that problem. I want to make sure I don't have to worry about it, since he is also giving me input. :)

If the game dies and dumps back to the OS with everything else running smoothly, it would likely be driver/config based and solved by either driver updates or a patch for the game. If the game dies and takes the computer down with it, it can still be driver related, but would hint that there could also be a physical hardware problem as well.

Too many variables to say without knowing any more details. Do you know if it happens with any/every 3D-type game or just a particular one?

All games, not sure about other programs. It doesn't take the computer with it. Just goes back to Vista and everything is fine (aside from the game being gone completely).
In that case I would look at the video drivers and a DirectX re-installation.

Any type of artifacting (odd colors) or tears across the screen before this happens?
