Your Cousin In New Mexxico
I see that Bucknuts has gone to the Dark Side, and now has an affiliation with (gasp!) ESPN!

I'll agree with Tibor on this one. :sleep2:

Back in the day, BN was definitely the place. The worst thing in the world that happened to that place was the Buckeyes winning the NC in 2002. It got flooded much faster than anyone over there expected and they sorta buckled under the pressure and started throwing the people off that made it the cool place to hang out. The GOOD news is that "those MISFITS" (One in particular) not only got this place started, but have continued to day by day make it the best internet site PERIOD regarding TOSU sports.

He may not want to admit it, but C-Dog was actually one helluva "moderator" over there. Not a "MOD" by title, but a poster that in a sea of idiots was always inclined to be the voice of reason. That's why "C" has this place running better than any other. All we're really searching for as fans is the truth. We all have different opinions and means of speaking them. Some people deserve a little "bitch slap" now and then and that was taboo on BN. Here, if you're an "asshole" at least we can write it. Here, if you like to fuck sheep at least a PIC can be posted proving so. It's all about entertainment and having fun, and if you can't do that here, YOU are probably that asshole that likes to fuck sheep anyway so screw you. "Peace."

I subscribed to ESPN.com the first month they offered the service, and helped beta a lot of their offerings, including fantasy football.

While the MoC/Tom Friend fiasco was the final straw in terms of my 'divorce' with ESPN, I had 'fallen out of love' with most everything about them online and on the small screen well before. I won't go into all the reasons, and I allow that some of them extend to the greater media as well -- but never did I imagine one of the 'core' Buckeye sites ever being directly affiliated with them. In retrospect, I realize why that's sort of naive. Business is, after all, business.

And that's what this is, of course, a business decision. A pay site finds it difficult to go from the massive cross-pollination that occurs in a network full of affiliates representing most I-A teams, to the relative isolation of independence. At the end of the day, there has to be bang for the buck, and the bet here is that getting access to ESPN offerings will lubricate wallets the way getting access to 'extra' Steve Helwagen and Dave Biddle didn't.

Don't misunderstand, I have no lingering issues with either of these guys. Biddle's a good guy and a solid writer, and with that hair, Steve is one of the few people I know who is virtually assured to never suffer blunt force trauma to the head. I joke -- but I think it goes without saying that Bucknuts has always had a terrific team of contributors, and this was true even when I was divorced from that community myself. I consider my relationship with Mr.B amicable, even friendly, and when I think of Kirk, I remember fondly destroying him in the first Bucknuts fantasy league (not to mention his hysterical contributions to our old picture association threads on the forums). So none of this is a "bash Bucknuts deal" at all, this scenario would be the same in my eyes were we talking about BSB or, ah, SGN/BII, instead of Bucknuts.

This move will probably help their bottom line, and will certainly give them new reason to crow about being "THE" this and "best/most authoritative" that.

I offer them congrats, while simultaneously feeling a bit (personally) like there's a bit of a oily taint that's just entered our cozy little virtual Buckeye neighborhood. Maybe that's unfair to ESPN, it's just my initial reaction.

BUT, when people bitch to me about BP, I almost always say something along the lines of "we're one flavor, it may not be for you, and there are plenty of alternatives -- find one where you'll be happier." This holds true here as well. Good for BuckNuts, I know this scenario is what they feel is ideal for them, and I'm sure there are plenty of fans who will find the marriage one that suits their interests. So in that light, it is indeed a win-win for everyone who will make use of it. For those who won't/don't, there are still plenty of viable alternatives.

Thanks, Dubs. Always makes me happy to see you here and posting. Now just drag NOB/BuckJim back and the 'core' of those old days on BN (remember the original forum that didn't require registration pre-ezboard?) is still stomping around here.

It's great that this turned into something some fans could enjoy. That was always the point.

And on that note, I dig this up from the past;

C-Dog,

THAT'S what I'm talk'in about. Now how in then hell can a Buckeye fan get banned from a TOSU site for posting that about a scUM fan???? Milwood's "Farewell" post on BN was undoubtedly the "POST OF THE CENTURY" on any TOSU site. Thanks for bringing that one back. Peace.

Not much bitch-slappin' happenin' over the last couple months...

Ebb and flow. Tidal/cyclical/menstrual harmony. No corrections would mean a community like BP is stagnating, and then the next thing you know we're a breeding ground for pesky disease-carrying mosquito larvae.

Two spheres in a delicate balance. One providing justice and order (moderation/administration), the other protecting atmosphere ("bitch-slappin'"). Each promoting site values and integrity. The two have to be distinctly different spheres though -- despite the value provided by each (albeit in different and varying proportion), they do so in complete conflict with one another and have distinctly different interests. What's the proper ratio between the two? There's the wave. If you ever see that balance in the form of a static line, we're in real trouble. Mosquito larvae trouble...
