Overview
Once you register at BuckeyePlanet you are automatically given 1000.00. Why? Because we love you, and because a betting simulation can be fun when your house and kneecaps aren't on the line. This will provide you with the funds to begin the drive to become the next BP Millionaire. Once registered and logged in, on your top navigation bar, you see where you get to begin.... Sportsbook.
Once you click on the term "Sportsbook" on the navigation bar, you are taken to the Sportsbook Home Page. It has a relatively simple interface, with tabs that allow you to sort events by their status.
As you can see, it has the Recent Events shown. These listed here are still open and taking wagers. Below this, you get a preview of the Recently Settled Events. They list the number of wagers, amount paid out, and other relevant information.
Time to lose some money....
Once you decide you find a game/match to wager on simply select it by click on the name of the event, in this case NFL MVP You will then be taken to the main betting page.
As you can see here, you have quite a bit of information. You see the bookie who posted the event, the date and time the event will stop taking wagers, if it is Open/Closed/Pending/Settled, the players or teams and their odds, as well as how many wagers have currently been made (0), and total amount ($0).
Now, let's go ahead and place a wager. Click on the "Place Wager" link, and you will have an overlay showing you what to do next.
For instructional purposes, I have decided to go with just $1. Once you have entered the information, you will see it save, and the page will auto-refresh showing you the new statistics. If at any time you want to see who has wagered on what, simply click on one of the outcomes (team or whatever result it may be), and another overlay box will appear telling you exactly who:
After that, you are all done. You can navigate back to home, or anywhere in the forums you so choose.
Misc Information
If you are wondering how to access all of the events you have wagered on, in the breadcrumb, click on "My Wagers"
You see all your wagers, regardless of Open/Closed/Settled. This will show you your last 10 wagers, and the results. You can access this same information on your Member Profile Page, under the Sportsbook tab.
If you are curious about random stats, we have that too. Again, on the breadcrumb, select "Statistics".
Differences between the old system (vBookie) and new one (Sportsbook)
There are a few key differences in how events and betting are handled on the new BuckeyePlanet.
First of all, events on the new Sportsbook do not automatically create a new thread. This will be beneficial because it means the forums will not be spammed every time a new batch of events is created. Also, not every event that people want to bet on necessarily merit a separate thread for discussion. So if events don't all show up in the forum, how will you keep up with them? There are alerts for that! Simply go to the Alert Preferences link in your control panel to set up the Sportsbook-related alerts that you want to receive.
Just because there isn't a thread automatically created for every Sportsbook event, that doesn't mean there isn't a place to discuss them. Every event has a place for comments so you can brag about your insightful wins or make fun of people for their miserable losses. Also, we do have the capability to create threads for Sportsbook events that will look and behave like vBets in the sense that most people are accustomed to. For things like Ohio State game threads or others that generate a significant amount of discussion either before or during the event, we will still have dedicated threads where everything can be discussed while allowing for easy access to betting. This new way of doing things should hopefully reduce the amount of clutter and duplicate conversations while keeping other active discussions from being prematurely buried in the forums underneath barely active betting threads.
Another thing that you need to be aware of as a bettor is that bookies have new abilities to update and edit events that weren't present before. The biggest change that this will bring about is a more realistic experience where the odds are no longer static. This means we will be able to have season-long bets where the odds update and change periodically to reflect the developments on the field as the winners start to rise to the top and the bad teams settle toward the bottom. It means that the odds might change if there is a significant development that changes the outlook on the game. Did the quarterback just get injured a few days before the game? Better put your bet on the other team before bookie gets to it and the odds shift!
Just like all of the other tutorials, if you have any questions feel free to reply in this thread so somebody can try to answer it for you. Also, if you see something in Sportsbook that hasn't been covered here that you feel others should be aware of, go ahead and add it here.
Good luck!
