Buckeye Receivers - 2005

There is no nickel back in the country, much less the big ten, that will be able to cover Gonzalez. He started to show flashes of what he was capable of at the end of last season, but this year .... Mismatch city. Not that there are any starting corner duos that'll be able to hang with Ginn/Holmes, but I just see a nasty nasty mismatch on Gonzo when all three of those guys are on the field. We saw him get loose for a few big plays at the end of last season, but I see him getting loose for a bunch of big games (for a #3 guy) all year this season.
Though I agree with you, good luck convincing a Miami Redhawk fan of it. :P

College fb superstars in Ginn and Holmes and a definite rising star in gonzo plus depth from talented guys like Hall, Lyons and Dukes--and some idiots on the jjhuddle board earlier were arguing that michigan's wr's are better than that!

wow....guess we'l just have to show em up come nov 19

You are so right,Albert Dukes is one hell of an athlete.Even though he dropped alot of balls in the spring game he is the real deal.
Dukes did drop a lot of balls, but he was open more than any reciever during that spring game. His route running is there, just needs a little experience. Best raw reciever we have seen in awhile though.

That sounds disgusting. Count me out.

Anyways, I'm not giving up on Hall as a solid contributor as #3. I know the popular choice is Gonzo with his speed, but Hall's size goes a long way in the Big 10. He had a good season, especially in the Purdue game. I'm not knocking Gonzo, but I think he only had 8 catches last year, so saying that he solidified himself as the #3 may be a bit premature.

I'm also starting to buy into the Dukes hype. He runs and cuts a lot like Santonio, so he's got to be good, right?

The best part is, we have two all-americans in Holmes and Ginn. Then there's a list of #3's that would start at any other school. Throw in our solid recruiting class, and any reasonable Michigan fan would have to agree that Avant, Breaston, and company don't quite hold up to this list. Remember, I said "reasonable".

Size means shit if you can't get open or outrun your defender after a 3-yard head start (Purdue). I'm guessing by your lack of support for Gonzo that you missed the last two games of the season. Although Gonzo had only eght catches, he scored twice and averaged over 22 ypc. Although Hall had 17 catches, he averaged less than 14 ypc, and nearly all of those cvatches cam early in the season before he was bumped out of the #2 WR spot by Ginn...he had a grand total of one catch (Purdue) in the last five games of the season. Back to that Purdue catch by Hall where he got ran down from behind by a LB, had it been Gonzo who had made the catch instead, it's a TD.

FU and your attempted thead hijack chuckjax. I'm watching the Purdon't game on tape right now. It's the first quarter but I'll look for the play Milli has on here.

The mere fact that there was rumors of Hall playing H-back should give you an idea of what the coaches think of Hall's abilities. Gonzo is #3 and Dukes is #4.

Not meant as a thread hijack, but we're obviously looooaded at WR. What about letting Ginn play some defense and give some offensive reps to other guys?

Uh, Ginn on defense has been discussed ad nauseam in dozens of other threads. Tressel all but said it ain't gonna happen. Reason is that although we are indeed loaded at WR, Ginn is by far the most explosive and dangerous player on offense.

It's funny how supporting Hall can be turned into "lack of support for Gonzo", which is promptly followed by an insult. You're absolutely right Mililani, I missed the last two games of the year last year. Can you fill me in? Did things turn out okay, or did the Bucks continue their dismal 2004 mid-year slide?
Here's to Gonzo not being caught from behind this year!

FMI, I agree that shopping Hall around at other positions is an obvious sign of where he sits with the depth chart at WR. However, I wouldn't count him out yet. Again, I think Gonzo has great potential, but I really doubt that he has locked down the #3 position at this point.

I guess his one catch in the last five games vice Gonzo's five catches, or Gonzo being the #3 WR in The Game and the bowl game isn't enough of an indicator. I think if Hall wants to see the ball more often, he may have to shift to TE. I can see Dukes and Lyons overtaking him on the depth chart...

I think that Hall still has a lot of potential...

However you definitely were asleep for the MSU, Purdue, UM and OkState games... he separated himself from Hall in those games... making big catches in all of them.

He also made a lot of noise in the spring game.

Hall has a lot to prove to push Gonzo back to the bench.

Wow - Mili seems to have softened his stance on Ginn playing defense. A couple months ago, his response would've been, "You can go pound coral if you think Ginn will play even a down of defense."

I wouldn't be surprised one way or the other when it comes to him playing defense, but I'm getting sick of people bringing it up. This is getting worse than the Dustin Fox Saga.

notice how those last three screen shots all had "1:08" on the clock, with him traveling about 10 yards within that second, after catching the ball and havin a few guys on his ass.

I agree wholeheartedly Winslow! Hall has tons of potential as a hybrid TE/Fullback. I'm no coach, but I think a formation of Holmes, Ginn, Gonzo at reciever, and Hall at fullback would cause serious problems for a defense. How would you defend that formation on defense if you were playing 2 deep man? Do you put a linebacker or safety on Hall? What do you do if Hall goes in motion? What if an option play is called when Hall is in motion?

A player that is a tweener like Hall should be used as a offensive conundrum. Keep the D guessing and you will win.
