Howard 'Hopalong' Cassady

Cassady earned the nickname "Hopalong" during his first game as a freshman for Ohio State. Columbus sportswriters who saw him play said he "hopped all over the field like the performing cowboy," a reference to the fictional character Hopalong Cassidy. In that game Cassady came off the bench to score three touchdowns in a win over Indiana University.

Donte "Lights Out" Whitner

I don't know whether anyone actually called him that at tOSU, but that's what Ohio High mag called him when he was committed to us his Senior year. He was on one side of the magazine cover in boxing gloves, and Louis "What Might Have Been" Irrizary :( was on the other side of the cover. (I just made that one up :tongue2: :wink2:)

EDIT

...which also makes me think of "Superman" Hiley :(

Lou "The Toe" Groza played for one year at OSU before being drafted by the army, when he got out of the army he went straight to the Browns to play.

The crazy thing with Groza, was that he played one year of Freshman football and historically isn't even credited as ever being a member of TOSU football. No letters. No participation.

One off the top of the head, how about Gaylord "Pete" Stinchcomb. Really boring, but he was a great player.
