NCAA opens Vols infractions hearing

The NCAA's infractions committee has opened its hearing into allegations against the football and men's basketball programs at Tennessee.
Former basketball coach Bruce Pearl was the first coach to enter the hearing room in a downtown Indianapolis hotel. Former football coach Lane Kiffin, now at Southern California, also was in town to speak in front of the committee.
The NCAA has charged both programs with committing recruiting violations and has accused both coaches with failing to promote an atmosphere of compliance within the programs.
In all, a 22-month investigation turned up a dozen rules violations.
Saturday's hearing is expected to last all day.

The NCAA has placed the University of Tennessee on a two-year probation and penalized Bruce Pearl, its former head men's basketball coach, for its "failure to monitor" the men's basketball program. The Division I Committee on Infractions found that Mr. Pearl ran afoul of the NCAA's recruiting rules and provided "false and misleading information" during the association's subsequent investigation. The committee accepted the university's 20 self-imposed penalties and levied a "show cause" order on the coach, barring him from engaging in any recruiting at any NCAA institution for three years.

I think the UT program is breathing a sigh of relief. No post season ban. No reduction of scholarships. Yeah they lost a coach out of it but considering they were facing the Pearl recruitment violations, lying to investigators, not to mention the violations committed during the Lane Kiffin stint. I think the UT program should be counting their blessings.

I still hear people call into the local radio stations here (happened just this morning) and blame all this on OSU, Craft, and Craft's father. Gets my blood boiling. A guy actually had the nerve to say, paraphrasing here, "Pearl put that Craft kid on the map. They gave him his first offer when Ohio State wasn't even looking at the kid. You'd think he and his father would be more grateful and not turn their back on a guy like Pearl who gave him his first chance."

Shit like this really pisses me off and is just another reason I know that I gotta get back to O-HI-O.

Here's the NCAA Infractions Report that formally gave Bruce Pearl the 3-year 'show cause' order.

The University was found guilty of major violations, and placed on 2 years of probation. The 5-year clock for 'repeat violator' status started ticking yesterday. Many self-imposed recruiting limitations were accepted by the NCAA.

He had 3 recruits (including Aaron Craft) and their families visit his house on a Tennessee football weekend in 2008. The parents didn't know it was an NCAA violation until they were at the house, when Pearl told them and asked them to not say anything about it.

Over a year later, after the NCAA had a picture of the recruits at Pearl's house, Pearl and some of the 3 assistants denied knowing where the picture was taken, and didn't identify the wife of an assistant coach in the photo. The coaches also concocted the story that they told the parents that it was a violation before the parents got to the house.

Pearl, after being told that he couldn't discuss the case with anyone, also called Craft's father and tried to influence what Mr. Craft would say to the NCAA.

The UT bball coaches were also guilty of making 94 impermissible phone calls to 12 recruits over a 2-year period, and Pearl and UT were both hit with a 'Failure to Monitor' charge since the phone calls weren't logged or tracked. Pearl was also hit with failure "to promote an atmosphere for rules compliance" in the program.

The assistants (who also all lost their jobs in March, 2011) each received a 1-year 'show cause' order.
