Out of the guys currently going pro; Rodgers, Benson, Alex Smith, Barron, Rolle, Derrick Johnson, Ronnie Brown, Erasmus, Rodrique Wright, maybe Thomas Davis (think Eric Turner but 10 pounds heavier), Mike Williams, are all possibly worth a top 5 pick in my opinion. I just don't follow the opinion that only a 1-2 guys are worth that pick...really in any draft.
Okay.. here's the thing though... you've got 11 guys there. Lets's say Leinert comes out and goes one.... and (For the sake of argument lets say Rodgers goes two)
That means you've got ten guys left who are 'worthy' of three spots... and talentwise you might be right... But that's not how it works. Your team need.. the team needs behind you... salary cap considerations and position (and the number of guys at a position) all play into it...
The interesting thin about the group you picked here, is that after the QB's, they all play different positions... okay with 2 RB's.
So... that by itself puts Thomas Davis at the bottom of the group just because he's a safety.... No longer worth the third pick... (Hey... if athletic ability and "sure fire" talent were all that's involved... who wouldn't have taken Sean Taylor number one?)
Same thing with a lot of Linebackers... though Johnson might be an exception.
Either Cedric Benson or Ronnie Brown are better than the other... Another guy... so one of them is no longer worth the third pick.
So it leaves you now... with one each CB, WR, OT, DT, DE, LB, QB and the leftover RB.
If their talent is equivalent... one is worth more to you than someone else... and conversely... someone else has a different need. Otherwise you might just drop to 10 for no good reason.
Thus the guy who deserves to be taken third is the guy who gets taken third.
My take is that if the Browns Like Rolle or Barron enough at 3, take them. But I still think a couple of the other guys might be 'better' players.(Derrick Johnson... I just dont like paying LB's that much... plus.. they could be looking at 3-4 coaches so... I can't say what the LB value is for as far as the Browns are concerned)....
I think Barron is a reach at 3.
I think Rolle is a good risk there, but... there are going to be teams who I think will be willing to pay for Rolle, Williams, and the hotter of the two RB's...
And you can always do something if there are 4 guys you like and soemone only wants you to drop 3 spots. (See Detroit bending Butchems over)
Having said all that.. theis draft is pretty darned thin, IMO. There jsut aren't guys with the measurables and the Resume... Williams, yeah... James, maybe... could be quicker... but it just doesnt' have that top 10 star power friom last year... and I think Roethlisberger went 11th?
