A former Notre Dame linebacker is suing the university and football coach Brian Kelly for negligence over a neck injury he suffered in 2015, the Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday.

Douglas Randolph claims he was never shown the results of a spinal scan after being injured during practice in September of that year. He believes he should not have been allowed to continue playing football, according to the Star's report. He is seeking unspecified damages.

Randolph said in the lawsuit he “suffered numbness in his upper extremities” after being hit during a drill. He said he informed Notre Dame’s trainer, Rob Hunt, who removed him from practice for a short period before clearing him to return.

Randolph also said he continued to experience symptoms from the hit and later underwent an MRI exam. According to the Star's report, a team doctor told Randolph he could continue his career, but Randolph is claiming he never saw the MRI results.

Per the Star, Randolph said in the lawsuit he experienced numbness during Notre Dame’s 44-28 loss to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 1, 2016. He claimed he informed Hunt of the numbness but Hunt told him to “continue playing” and “get back in the game.”
