Breaking down Urban Meyer's offense

"Power spread" with pro-sets?

I think Urban is seeing the value of both. Multiple look teams are so very hard to game plan against.

Very excited to hear this.

If you look at his Florida Gator's playbook, he essentially had a spread/pro-set formation called 'Gator Heavy'.

Here it is, copied from NCAA Football 09 which essentially has the correct plays:

Yeah, its a video game, I know, but AFAIK, it was taken from watching film and copying their play calls, and insert them into the game. The formation is very useful on the game, as it allows you to run run-heavy QB formations with a lead blocker on every play - in addition to the Jet Sweep, utilizing a tight end and back for blocking.

Maybe its just me - but seeing no RB, no SE/FL (WR) combination and your QB being the primary running option doesn't really scream "pro set"...

Thats awesome. Nice to multiple routes run at different levels in an offense. :!

As long as I do not have to look at the off-tackle play, famously known as "Dave" on 1st, 2nd, and 3rd down, I'm happy. Kill Dave or only bring him out for a nostalgic appearance. Dave has worn out his welcome along with Jim Bollman.

Dave isn't going anywhere.... and that's a good thing. The problem isn't Dave. It's that Dave didn't have enough friends.

What if the qb gets injured due to too many carries

Tebow was a 235lb QB who could handle a high carry load. With Leak and Brantley, Urban called QB runs far less. Brax's carries I suspect will be somewhere in between. Which means more carries for the backs and more screens of different varieties.

Braxton just finished a season - mostly healthy - with a ton of carries, and arguably more than projected under Meyer when looking at a total inbetween Smith & Tebow.

Ross Fulton contrasts Urban's "power spread" to Oregon's offense. Oregon has the zone read as the base play, while Urban's offense is more like a 1-back pro-style offense with QB run options added to power running plays.

I expect that we'll be more "multiple" on offense then people assume. Once you have the blocking schemes in place the different formations aren't really a big deal. We saw everything from empty backfield 5 WR sets to the Maryland I when we played UF in the title game. It's about putting your players in position to make plays and calling series of plays that actually make sense/put pressure on the defense (properly mixing constraint plays in)

Meyer's Spread Failures & What We Can Learn
I have spent the last two weeks idenfitying the underpining basis and building blocks for Urban Meyer's spread offense.

Despite the spread to run's numeric advantage, the spread offense is not a panacea, as OSU fans joyfully witnessed with Rich Rodriguez's failed Michigan tenure. Urban Meyer also experienced periods of relative offensive paucity while at Florida.

The spread, like any other offense, needs the right packages and personnel to function. From Meyer's less successful offenses at Florida, we can gleam the essential building blocks to ensure success.

Also, I remembered reading an article about the offense Tim Tebow is running at his NFL team. Can't find it now, but should be posted in this thread too, along with the two future parts on Urbie's running and passing games.

Um... never mind... found it. It was in Urban's thread thanks go GomerBucks.

Ever since Tim Tebow exploded onto the scene as Denver's starting quarterback -- and, incidentally, led the Broncos on a six-game winning streak and their first post season victory since 2005 -- there have been any number of "truisms" bruited about the offense Tebow ran at Florida until they have taken on the facade of "common knowledge." After all, everyone knows:
