Paging Diego-Bucks. Thoughts?
Oh, so many...
I think that Michigan is blessed that they had a guy like Hoke as a back-up plan. He is extremely intelligent and knows how to coach and recruit both sides of the ball. He has roots in the Big Ten region, has recruited Texas very well and now has Southern California to recruit. Michigan has always wanted to recruit nationally like Notre Dame because of the lack of consistent high-school talent that comes out of their home state. Brady Hoke will give them that capability more than any other coach on their radar, sans Harbaugh. Brady is going to enjoy bringing in big O-lineman to get establish a power running game, unfortunately for the Wolverines he is not going to be able to attempt that type of running game for some time.
I think he will adapt and run multiple schemes like Tressel currently does (sometimes spread option, sometimes pro-style etc.). At SDSU, Hoke ran with a power-I, 3-WR sets, empty backfield, single-back. All of those had some measure of success and I think Brady will recognize that he needs to have this versatility and will need to run some of what RichRod did with Denard; but he will probably run a 2 QB system of Denard and Gardner (arm strength) for 2011.
Hoke will coach up the defense and recruit the lines very hard. That in and of itself is going to be alarming to Buckeye fans so used to dominating the line of scrimmage for the past 4 seasons.
So, essentially I think Hoke will be able to have the intelligence, adaptability, versatility and defensive prowess that failed RichRod.
That being said, I am of the opinion that Hoke has a ceiling somewhere around Kirk Ferentz. Solid coach, recruits well, will win consistently but not necessarily dominant and more than capable of blowing games. Hoke= 7-10 wins.
As an SDSU alum, I'm bummed to be losing our first bowl-winning coach in ages. I think that the Aztecs will try to get Rocky Long as the HC, if Hoke doesn't bring him along with. Hoke left us with some talent in recruits and on the team... if they don't all leave or change commitments.
Overall, Hoke will be a success at rebuilding Michigan to something resembling Michigan; this is conditional however, on Michigan giving him the time and resources necessary to do so.
Fuck Michigan... and I hate to say this... Fuck Hoke.
