Bracketology and Selection Sunday Discussion

Iowa State is a really good team and obviously a better team than us. But speaking specifically in terms of the match-up, I don't hate that draw. I mean, we knew we were gonna get a tough match-up, our resume doesn't deserve better. But I am just very thankful that we made it in, and not the play-in game! And, honestly, I think there are worse 5 or 6 seed match-ups we could have gotten. I dreaded the thought of a potential Auburn match-up.

I do think that one sub-bracket with 3 B1G teams is pretty messed up. That should never have happened and I have to think the committee rushed something there.

I would have loved to hear Izzo being told, after they just had won the real tournament, that Michigan State was put in the same bracket with two other Big Ten teams and that if he won his first round game there was a possibility that his team might have to play another Big Ten opponent. I think that he might have gone off on the Selection Committee.

You would have thought that our illustrious commissioner might have spoken out but that would be too much to ask. Thank goodness we only have one more year of him.

Less interesting because we've already seen these teams play each other multiple times but also kind of a slight to the conference and the teams. At best, one out of those 3 teams gets to go to the Elite 8.

If a conference is going to have 8 teams in the Dance then, yeah, you're gonna have at least a couple in each region. But to load up three of them in one sub-section of one region where theoretically two B1G teams could play each other in the Round of 32--nah, man, that's overkill.

So it's just conference superiority nonsense? Meh.
Would you rather have the Syracuse zone play a random team or an ACC team that's scouted and played it twice already this season?

I think it's a disservice to a team if they have to match up with a conference foe just to reach the Sweet 16.

If two teams have played only 1 time during the season, I dont see much reason in trying to prevent a hypothetical second round matchup. MSU has played UL this season as well. There are a lot of teams that have played once, trying to avoid repeats of all 1-time matchups is not very feasible considering other seeding priorities.

Well that's something more unique to Syracuse. The 2003 run was on the back of the Big12 not knowing how to play the zone. But there's nothing brand specific like that in the B1G. There's familiarity, sure....but it sounds more like the complaint is "Awww man, now we won't be able to have 4 teams in the Final Four".

Well in reality, you could go the other way. Teams that are not in the same conference have to spend more time preparing for the team that they are going to be playing. Also, I do not think that you can single out the zone as the only unique defense. Different schools from different conferences all play different styles but you and others do not see them. Just because they do not play a zone does not mean that the defense that is played by a team is not unique. There is also offense.

I didn't say Syracuse has the only unique defense.
