Wow, what a tough week to put in the poll. There are some deserving teams out there that I wasn't sure how to even get into my poll this week.

There are also some teams in my poll that I believe may be pretenders and not contenders.....

  1. Florida
  2. Texas
  3. Alabama
  4. LSU
  5. Boise St
  6. USC
  7. OSU
  8. Oklahoma
  9. Va. Tech
  10. BYU
  11. TCU
  12. Oklahoma St
  13. Iowa
  14. Cinci
  15. Georgia
  16. Ga Tech
  17. PSU
  18. Ole Miss.
  19. California
  20. Mizzou
  21. Michigan
  22. Kansas
  23. Miami
  24. Wisconsin

I've created my poll for week 4. Here's my methodology.

First, I considered every team in FBS with no more then 1 loss. I think it's too early to consider any 2-loss teams like FSU, Washington, or Texas Tech.

Looking at each team's wins and losses and considering their opponents, I ranked each team within their own group, the 6 BCS conferences and everybody else. Here are the 36 teams I considered ranking after that:

SEC......Pac.10....Big.12....Big.10....ACC.....Big .East..Others
Alab.....USC.......Texas.....Iowa......VaTech..Cin cy.....Houston
Florida..Oregon....Oklahoma..tOSU......Miami...USF .......Boise
LSU......UCLA......Mizzou....TSUN......GaTech..... .......TCU
Auburn...Cal.......Kansas....Wiscy.....N.Car...... .......BYU
Georgia..Ariz......Okla.St...Penn.St.............. .......Utah
S.Car....Stan......Neb............................ .......N.D
Ole.Miss

Then I started ranking teams, based solely on what's happened on the field so far this year. Preseason polls weren't factored in, last year's results weren't factored in, what I expect to happen the rest of the year wasn't factored in, and who I think would win on a neutral field wasn't factored in. Also, no polls from last week were factored in; teams with losses or with good wins weren't moved a certain number of spots, they were slotted accoriding to my evaluation of season-to-date results.

Head-to-head was considered. Chains of an undefeated team and a bunch of 1-loss teams were looked for, here's one: Houston-Okla St-Ga-S.Car-OleMiss. Two chains that existed last week were broken when teams near the beginning of the chain lost: Miami-FSU-BYU-Oklahoma no longer applies, so each team is evaluated on overall results. Also the LSU-Washington-USC-tOSU chain was broken.

The severity of a loss was also factored in, So although USC beat tOSU, their loss to now-unranked Washington is more damaging than tOSU's loss to USC. Combined with 2 straight shutouts, I have tOSU ahead of USC.

Here's what I came up with:

01. Alabama
02. Florida
03. Texas
04. Iowa
05. Houston (their schedule will prevent them rising to the top-2)
06. LSU
07. Va Tech (best results of the 1-loss teams)
08. tOSU
09. Oklahoma (BYU loss is looking worse with FSU results)
10. USC
11. Cincinnati
12. Boise St
13. Auburn
14. Mizzou
15. Kansas
16. Okla St
17. Oregon
18. TCU
19. USF
20. UCLA
21. Miami (they were my #1 last week)
22. TSUN
23. Georgia
24. BYU (beating Oklahoma carries weight)
25. S. Carolina

Cal and Penn State dropped from the top 10 to unranked, since Cal got hammered and hasn't beaten a ranked team, and Penn State also hasn't beaten anybody with a pulse.

I realize you're not calling Iowa the 4th best team in the nation for end of year purposes, and they are undefeated presently, but #4 seems awfully high to me. In as much as they needed two blocked FGs to beat N. Iowa, beat a bad ISU team, a pretty OK Zona, and a discounted (in your own discussion) PSU...

But.. a win is a win, and they do have 4, so...

I'm not in the poll thingy, but here are my rankings based solely on how good I think the teams are and not so much on specific head-to-head results:

1. Florida
2. USC
3. Alabama
4. Texas
5. Ohio State
6. Oklahoma
7. Georgia
8. Penn State
9. Florida State
10. Arkansas
11. Mississippi
12. Va Tech
13. Miami
14. Iowa
15. Houston
16. Texas Tech
17. Wisconsin
18. Boise State
19. LSU
20. TCU
21. South Carolina
22. Auburn
23. South Florida
24. Cincinnati
25. Missouri

Some thoughts:

a. Cincinnati has a nice team, but 24th in the nation is as good as they are. Anyone who seriously thinks they win more than they lose against Penn State, or even Iowa, is delusional.
b. Penn State is clearly better than Iowa, even given the outcome of the game last night. Iowa got every possible break, and Clark had an absolutely dreadful game that is only partly explained by Iowa's very good defense.
c. I hesitate to even put LSU into the top 20. Top 20 teams should not struggle that much against Mississippi Freaking State. Yet the talent seems to be there.
d. Michigan has proven in its near-loss to Indiana that it does not belong in the top 25 - yet.
e. Florida State has failed in a couple of games, but if you watch that team closely, tell me they don't have top 10 talent. Maybe Bowden has had time pass him by, but I think by the end of the year they will be right there; I see them winning the ACC.
f. Ferentz seems to have his mojo fully back. How any coach can win with the limited raw talent he gets is beyond me. Iowa's ranking relates more to Ferentz and relatively little with who occupies the jerseys.

I knew the rating would get flack because of the N. Iowa game, but Iowa's undefeated and they've beaten two BCS teams that nobody else has beaten. Few teams can make that statement.

They're the only team to beat both Penn State and Arizona at this point. And Arizona is the only team to beat Central Michigan. So they get bumped because of those facts.

Observations:
1). Bama is playing as well as anybody. With the offense gaining 490 yds a game while only giving up 200 yd/gm, including only 50 yds rushing, this might be the most balanced team in the country. I would not be shocked if they supplant Florida at the top of the SEC.

2). As proven this week, Oregon is still a dangerous team. They might give SC a run for their money.

3). PSU is worth [censored]. Can't run, can't pass, can't hang on to the ball, no playmakers. The only way we lose to them is by beating ourselves.

4). Time to think about either realigning the crappy conferences or kicking them out of D1 altogether. It is unacceptable that TCU/Boise/Houston/BYU are all sitting in the top twenty and only play one or two good team a year.

Well that was interesting.

Anyway, my poll is based on more of the "neutral field" argument, who, IMO, is the better team. Not really a guess on who will finish where based on strength of schedule or anything.
