Boycott Scotts Due to Smoking Policy

Well, not really Stoo.. Lets say we were talking about an employer saying, we've decided the health risks associated with emissions from automobiles increases our health insurance costs over time to the point that now, unless you walk or ride a bike, you can't work here.

wouldnt the employer want the opposite? if you walk or ride a bike to work in a major metropolitan city, you will be injesting far more harmful emissions than if you drove.

Should companies have the right to dictate the behavior of their employees when they are not on company premises, or when not on company business?

That boils down in my mind to a constitutional argument - the right to privacy.

I dunno, as a future teacher, it seems that we have many freedoms outside of the company premises taken away. I see no problem with it.

I really cannot believe that someone is advocating the relinquishment of hard fought freedoms - whether it be to an unelected coporation, or to institutions of Government.

I'm praying that you are teaching something like Math or Science, hopefully not Civics and Government :wink2:

Perhaps your argument/position would be better supported by statistics and facts than erroneous and opinionated banter. I'd love to see some data in support of your argument. I doubt you'll be able to produce, but I could be wrong. That's the great thing about science -it's all peer reviewed before it's accepted and for the most part, it's opinion free.
If only that were true. Depending on who funds a study, the results seem to lean towards the direction of the funding. For example, we all know that science condemns secondhand smoke. If it were half as deadly as they say, then smokers would be dying in droves after about 3 months. You could give a copy of the report on secondhand smoke to my grandma. She started when she was 10 years old and lived to 85 and died of natural causes. Would you trust a study funded by the smokefree.org nazi's?

Dude, you owe me some kind of royalty or something here.

You guys either don't understand or would rather argue a point that is rather irrelevant instead. If there is to be a boycott of Scott's, boycott them for what they do and promote others to do to the earth. If they want to be this health conscious company, the least they could do is put out a "green" alternative to the bullshit that they offer. I used to use Scott's, and like I said I quit almost a decade ago. My lawn has never looked so nice (and at about %50 of the cost). Some thing they don't mention...

Grub control and the insecticide that these companies sell

Yep, they kill off the harmful insects just like they are supposed to....

The advertising also is geared to send you into a panic if you see one grub.... one per sq ft is not horrible and generally will not adversely affect your lawn.

Other things they won't tell you about the insecticide they offer. Again, yes, they kill harmful insects, they also kill earthworms, and any other beneficial insect that would be inhabiting your lawn. they are non discriminate. Hell if your going to do that you might as well use 24d on your lawn because you have dandelions. Kill it all, at least you won't have any weeds.

fuck them and the urea they rode in on.

This is fucking stupid. Political correctness run amok. Does anyone know why people like Jennifer Anniston and Brad Pitt (avid smokers) are never photographed smoking? Duh.

What would the reaction be if the CEO condemened homosexuality because there is a higher correlation of contracting aids and goosing health care costs?

Imagine the possibilities...

I will now be buying things from Scotts that I don't even need (like anything you can buy from them since I don't give a shit about my lawn) just to counteract you boycotters. eat it. :p

I will now grab the nearest non-smoker to me and proceed to blow smoke in thier face, as often as possible, maybe even CPR style. So that way, everyone dies from smoke. choke on it. :p

Good, then give the shit to me. That way, you can prove your point and I will have the greenest damned lawn in the neighborhood!
Before I became somewhat chemical conscious, my wife and I used to live in a condo. The landscape guys would fly by on their mowers at 7:30 in the morning. I would go by a 40# bag of Scott's turf builder and every other day through a few handfulls out behind out condo. Took the little beeners about 6 weeks to realize they needed to slow down behind our house so as not to kill the mower.

I take it you are joking, but that is one thing I have against smokers.

I lost my grandfather when I was in my teens to emphysema, and lung cancer. I barely knew him since he lived in Floridan and we lived in Ohio.

Being in the military I deal with a higher average of smokers than the average population (as accurate as I can tell). I was stationed in San Antonio and the work policy was a 10 minute break for everyone, hourly. with an unwritten rule "IF you were a smoker". If you didn't smoke and were caught doing something other than smoking on the break (ie: talking about sports or checking your email) then you were yelled at. As long as you were outside smoking, you could do as you pleased and the breaks rarely lasted less than 15-20 minutes. After talking to senior leadership, it came back that "well, we cant MAKE them quit" or "its up to their boss to reprimand them or keep track of their breaks". I was told that all they could do was recommend they attend a cessation class (great more time off) and let them know that was an option. Of course many took them up on the offer, but w/in days they were back to smoking. Smokers would rub it in and blow smoke in your faces if to mock those who didn't smoke.

I am allergic to cigarette smoke, but that never seemed to bother anyone or be more respectful. On top of that, try doing a room inspection of someone who smokes continuously and the smells they have in their uniform when they report for duty. To me it is a disrespect for others in your work area.

Now that I have PCS'd (transferred) to another base, a training base, things are much better. You have to be in class teaching 50 minutes on the hour and there are only about 4 places you can smoke on base (none close to the schoolhouses). Students are not allowed to smoke on base which is a plus and very few seem to have a problem with it. I think it increases overall morale and health of all those that work in our area. I know its been a plus for me.
