Boycott Scotts Due to Smoking Policy

mr. incognito, who are you to tell me i can not kill myself with a legal product so long as i am harming noone else. you point to my medical insurance and i point to the impossible to count immagrants coming into the country getting FREE medical coverage. you wanna reduce insurance premiums... you don't start with the smokers. THEY ARE ATLEAST CONTRIBUTING TO THE FUND!

For one, there is something called second hand smoke that is dangerous to others. Unless you're smoking in a closed room with absolutely no one around, you're probably harming someone at some point (and that's just with smoke...imagine how bad you stink when you smoke).

And two, sure illegal immigration hurts health care costs, but that doesn't diminish the fact that reducing the number of smokers would be very helpful in keeping costs down (and keeping more money in peoples pockets to pick up the added costs when the tax revenue falls). Both problems are exclusive. It's not like the INS and FDA share employees and budgets, so why can't both problems be tackled at the same time? I'd suggest writing your congressperson (please use the spell check if you do) or joining the Minutemen if you're this upset.

Don't mistake my defense of Scotts as completely agreeing with their policy. As an insurance person, I can completely understand Scotts' position, and if that's their stance...hey, good for them. Personally, I would handle it if as you suggest it were my company, and I'd also have other incentives for lower premiums like gym memberships and high deductibles (which some companies and plans do...not enough in my opinion). The only question would be the amount of a surcharge which could be extremely high depending on how many smokers you have and how your company is insured. My guess is, the surcharge would be much, much higher than most smokers could afford (consider that they'll not only be subsidizing their own increased chances of needing health care but probably the methods used to ensure everyone is being honest when they say they're nonsmokers) leading some to opt out of coverage entirely or do the bright thing and quit smoking.

It's not that much higher. I have family coverage here and the smoking rate is about $20-30 per month higher.

Have it out for the automobile industry too, do you? Funny that the exhaust from cars doesn't make Scotts say, "No more driving to work"

Or, are you going to suggest that auto-exhaust doesn't cause cancer?

I'm sure you know that the "evidence" promoting this idea is highly suspicious.

Ever heard of smoking outside on the back porch? Works great for me, and no one complains. Also, no smell on my clothes.

I'm sure if they found somebody outside sucking exhaust out of a car, they would be fired for stupidity also.

All I said is that it could be much higher depending on the pool of insureds and the company providing the coverage (simple law of numbers crap). If that's all you're paying, you got a great rate and decent coverage.

Yeah, all smokers are as smart and have the same manners you do.

Come on...I've been reading your posts for a while and know you can do better than that. Comparing the deadliness of types of smoke clouds the issue (no pun intended) with useless debates over irrelevant "facts".

Thanks Stoo... no pun anticipated....

My hearts not much in this debate. I do think you're underestimating the damage that cars have on health though. Maybe if it was the middle of the summer and smog was everywhere I'd have better luck convincing you.
