Resto: Wraps were doctored with plaster in fight vs. Collins

Former welterweight Luis Resto has acknowledged that the beating he gave the late Billy Collins Jr. in 1983 -- in which, over 10 rounds, he pounded Collins with tampered gloves that each had two inches of padding removed -- was even worse than previously believed.

Resto, at a news conference on Thursday in New York, acknowledged that the tape used to wrap his hands in that fight had been soaked in plaster of Paris, giving him a pair of hardened casts underneath his unpadded gloves.

Collins suffered from blurred vision and depression after the June 16, 1983 fight. He died in a car accident about nine months later.

Klitschko's camp seeks exception from IBF for Thompson fight

Unified heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko has two mandatory challengers to deal with, the WBO's Tony Thompson and the IBF's Alexander Povetkin, and both bouts are due. However, Klitschko plans to first defend against Thompson.

Shelly Finkel, Klitschko's adviser, told ESPN.com that they are in the process of trying to secure an exception from the IBF so Klitschko can first face Thompson.

Assuming they can obtain the exception, Klitschko-Thompson would take place July 12 on HBO in Germany, Finkel said.

Cotto, Margarito win big, set up welterweight showdown

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. -- After two lopsided welterweight title fights, it's time for Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito to get it on in the ring.

That likely will happen this summer, and both champions can expect tougher outings than they had Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall.

Cotto battered Alfonso Gomez for five rounds to retain his WBA welterweight title and set up the fight with new IBF champion Margarito. Earlier, Margarito dominated Kermit Cintron for the second time, then knocked him out in the sixth round to win the IBF crown.

Confident and collected Calzaghe made Hopkins eat his words

LAS VEGAS -- Joe Calzaghe still doesn't know what it's like to see his opponent's hand raised.

Since 1990, when he lost an amateur bout in Europe, through an 11-year reign as super middleweight champion, Calzaghe was perfect.

He still is, even if Bernard Hopkins disagrees.

Calzaghe, having cleaned out the 168-pound division with his lopsided victory against Mikkel Kessler in November, finally decided to bring his considerable game to American soil at age 36 for a stab at history. He found his mark, outpointing Hopkins on a razor-close split decision to win the light heavyweight world championship on Saturday night before an adoring crowd of 14,213 revelers, most of whom made the trip across the pond from his native Wales.

De La Hoya wins easy decision

CARSON, Calif. (AP)?Oscar De La Hoya showed he could still beat a contender. Next up is cashing in again like a champion.

In what was little more than a tuneup for a much bigger fight, De La Hoya kicked off his retirement tour Saturday night before an appreciative crowd by pitching a near shutout over a game but overmatched Steve Forbes.

De La Hoya got a chance to shake off ring rust and put on a show in front of his hometown fans, who came out in big numbers to cheer him on against a fighter whose previous biggest claim to fame was losing in the final of the ?Contender? reality series. He didn?t disappoint, battering the smaller Forbes around on his way to an easy 12-round decision win in his first fight in a year.

Tuneup over, De La Hoya points to rematch with Mayweather Jr.

CARSON, California -- The crowd had gone home mostly satisfied, and Oscar De La Hoya had a few minutes to shower and change from boxing trunks into something a bit less revealing. His job not yet finished for the night, he stood in the same ring where he beat Steve Forbes and wasted no time promoting his next act.

This one has already been seen before, but that didn't stop De La Hoya, who is proving as adept at promoting fights as he is in fighting them.

"I tell you one thing, I can't wait until September," De La Hoya said.

I used to love boxing as a kid. First started actually training with a heavy bag/speed bag before I ever used anything else. I will say it's sad to see boxing in the state it is. It was a blast to watch a highly touted fight on HBO on a saturday night, when I was young.

I checked this thread to see the outcome of the fight last night. One of my biggest gripes about boxing "an easy 12 round decision"....If it was that easy, then it never should have went 12 rounds....

Rahman, Toney agree to fight on July 16

Heavyweights Hasim Rahman and James Toney, both in dire need of a significant victory, will meet July 16 in a rematch after their handlers came to an agreement this week.

"Top Rank and I and the fighters have agreed to the fight," Toney promoter Dan Goossen said. "It's a very tough division to have a high-profile fight in without it being for a world championship, but the winner of this fight will have another opportunity to fight for another championship."

They will meet in a scheduled 12-rounder at the Pechanga resort in Temecula, Calif., Goossen said. Goosen told ESPN.com Monday that he finalized a deal over the weekend for the bout to be televised live on "Best Damn Sports Show Period (FSN).

ESPN - Light heavyweight champ Calzaghe set to face Jones on Sept. 20 - Boxing

Calzaghe, Jones to meet for Calzaghe's 175-pound championship Sept. 20

When Wales' Joe Calzaghe defeated Bernard Hopkins for the light heavyweight championship April 19 in Las Vegas in his first fight in the United States, there was one spectator perhaps more interested than anyone else inside the Thomas & Mack Center.

Roy Jones Jr., the former undisputed light heavyweight champion and pound-for-pound king, was ringside working as an analyst for the British radio broadcast of the bout.

At the post-fight news conference, Calzaghe said he might fight only one more time before retiring and wanted it to be against Jones.

Jones, who was present and was coming off a career-resuscitating Jan. 19 victory against Felix Trinidad, said he also wanted the fight.

Now, after the past several months of talking about the fight, it's a done deal, John Wirt, CEO of Jones' promotional company, Square Ring, told ESPN.com on Tuesday.

Calzaghe (45-0, 32 KOs) and Jones (52-4, 38 KOs) will meet for Calzaghe's 175-pound championship on Sept. 20 (HBO PPV). The site will be New York's Madison Square Garden, where Jones dominated Trinidad en route to a unanimous decision.

"The deal for the fight is done," Wirt said. "We're finalizing with the Garden...

Sources: De La Hoya, Pacquiao agree to Dec. 6 fight in Vegas

Oscar De La Hoya, boxing's biggest star, will announce Thursday that he will meet pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao on Dec. 6, two sources close to the fight told ESPN.com.

Top Rank's Bob Arum, whose company promotes Pacquiao, would not confirm a deal was in place for what would be the year's biggest fight, but he did tell ESPN.com that De La Hoya would host a media teleconference at 2 p.m. ET on Thursday to announce his opponent.

"We'll know who is he is fighting tomorrow," Arum said Wednesday from Youngstown, Ohio, where he was attending a promotional event for the Kelly Pavlik-Bernard Hopkins fight that he is co-promoting with De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions. "I made a commitment that I wouldn't say anything and that tomorrow there would be an announcement. I'm not allowed to make any comments. Everything will be clear on Thursday."
