Intensity is Youkilis' trademark
Red Sox first baseman takes nothing for granted
By Ian Browne / MLB.com

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- One day, there was going to be a throw that hit the wrong part of his glove. Or a bad hop that slipped under him. Maybe there was going to be a slight mental lapse that would lead to that inevitable error. That's usually how it happens over the endless course of a baseball season. Going the whole season without an error at your primary position?

Colon impressive in bullpen sessions, aims for March 15 start

Associated Press
Updated: March 5, 2008, 7:44 PM ET

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Red Sox reluctance to give Bartolo Colon rave reviews keeps getting tougher.
The 2005 AL Cy Young Award winner pitched his second impressive bullpen session Wednesday and is on schedule to make his first start on March 15 since signing a minor league contract on Feb. 25.
"The expectation was there," Boston pitching coach John Farrell said after watching Colon throw 41 pitches, "but I think initially and, again, this is very premature, he's on the positive side of those expectations."
Still, the Red Sox don't want to rush him.

Is there a reason that Boston didn't sign him to a long term deal? Considering he is a top closer in baseball....

Papelbon signs deal
The Boston Red Sox and closer Jonathan Papelbon agreed Thursday to a $775,000, one-year contract, nearly doubling his salary.
Papelbon was among 18 Red Sox players who agreed to one-year deals, putting Boston's entire 40-man major-league roster under contract.

It's strictly business OBJ. The good thing about young talened players like Papelbon is that they're cost-controlled for the first 3 years of their contract. He just had his pre-arbitration salary doubled though. Not a bad little pay raise.

Papelbon's payday is coming.

Beckett leaves spring start after experiencing back spasms

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Josh Beckett's back pain began when he landed on a soft spot after his first warmup pitch. He threw five more, then walked off the field before the game even started.

Now the Red Sox must wonder for at least one more day when their ace can pitch again.

"We'll just have to wait and see how it feels tomorrow" was Beckett's only comment three hours after he felt back spasms and called catcher Jason Varitek to the mound following his sixth warmup pitch.

Sox prompted to place Schilling on DL
Veteran shelved for at least 60 days; makes room for Holdzkom
By Ian Browne / MLB.com

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- As inevitable as it was, the Red Sox still had to make it official. They did so on Thursday morning, placing right-hander Curt Schilling on the 60-day disabled list. Schilling, trying to bounce back from right shoulder woes, has been limited to strictly indoor exercises this spring....

"I think that will be a ton of excitement," Red Sox manager Terry Francona said before Monday's exhibition game against the New York Yankees. "I know he's honored."

Jon Lester will pitch the second of the two-game series with the A's in Japan on March 26.

Red Sox ace Beckett won't go to Japan

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Josh Beckett will stay behind when the Red Sox fly 7,500 miles to Tokyo on Wednesday, even though he threw a ball 75 feet without back pain on Sunday.

Boston manager Terry Francona made official what had been obvious for several days: his ace right-hander won't travel to Japan, where he probably would have started the Red Sox regular season opener against the Oakland Athletics.

"He's not going to go with us to Japan," Francona said Sunday. "Talked to him this morning about it. He completely understands. ... It's just not the right thing to do."
