Boston College 14, Virginia Tech 10 (Final)

How about leaving your end zone unprotected on 4th and 20 from about the 23 yard line so someone could sneak in and catch a pass. How dumb is that?

I hate for teams like BC that would get toasted by a bunch of other squads to slip in there (sort of like the Brigham Young University debacle a few years back). If you play them you'll kill 'em.

What an odd game... VT' defense dominated for 50 minutes, two bad calls led to 10 VT points, Ryan put the balls in the hands of VT defenders 6 times (though they only kept 2 picks), BC fumbles three times which VT couldnt get their hands on... VT special teams looked horrible, roughing the kicker twice and fumbling a late onside kick... The final difference seemed to be BC realizing Ryan cant throw TDs while being chased by half the Tech team so they left some guys in to protect, while VT gives up on the rush and drop 8 though they leave the end zone empty.

VT had only been rushing 3 on third down allnight long - and still getting pressure. They went into a soft zone defense on that next-to-last series and like always allowed the opposing team to get their rythm and start moving the ball.
I can't believe how bad BCs offensive line is - they wouldn't cross midfield against us. VT's defense is pretty good, and as long as they stayed aggressive, BC didn't stand a chance. Just goes to show "if you play to not lose, you will lose".

VT's QB is absolutely dreadful lol. I didn't see one decent pass by him. I don't know what was up with VT's defense. They absolutely dominated that game until 5 minutes left in the 4th and then just seemed to give up.

The reason I wouldn't mind seeing us and BC in the championship game is just to get the Northern teams some love...I get so sick of the southern speed, and all that shit...I am sure we will hear after the season if that was the case that Florida or LSU would of beat those teams in the championship b/c they are much faster, but who gives a shit...

Give me us and BC and lets battle it out in some Northern state...Hopefully in a snow storm...

Personally, the thing that sticks in my mind is what the hell Beamer was thinking towards the end. His defense intercepts Ryan with 6 minutes left, and he has his QB throw the ball on the third down. Had they ran the ball and picked up 5 yards or so; then they would have been in makeable field goal range. His kicker already had kicked one from around 40-45 earlier. Then they line up for a field goal and do some weird pooch to pin BC near their end zone. Dumb decision, IMO.

What a damned finish for BC, and what a damnable collapse for VT - and it's Ryan on the sidelines giving new meaning to being a top-notch hurler? After the game winning cross-field, off-balance toss into the hands of Callender, waiting free of unwanted Hokie attention in the end-zone?

I cannot decide which would make the better YouTube moment - the post toss hurl job on the sidelines ("he's giving it up for the team?) or the bouncing dance, a la The Jerk, by Jagodzinski.

The game-winning TD pass may have not been that spectacular, but his first TD pass to make it 10-7 was a hell of a pass. It doesn't get much better than that. All the receiver had to do was basically stick his arms out, let the ball tuck itself in, and worry about getting his foot down.

I think that Ryan deserves some credit for putting together a 92 yard drive, and then capitalizing on the recovered onside kick to drive 66 yards to win the game in 4 minutes. Thats pretty damn impressive, especially coming back from a pretty miserable game in the rain, in a hostile environment, and on national TV. In the end, he got the win for his team.

It was actually 3rd down :wink2:.

Even if VT would have gotten a field goal on that drive, they would have still lost 14-13. Not to mention BC probably would have gotten better field position on their first drive after a kickoff, compared to starting on their own 8 yard line after the punt.

I would've definitely ran the ball on 3rd down

I thought the game winner was a hell of a throw. He was outside the left hash, throwing across his body to the right corner, with both feet off the ground. Maybe five D1 players can make that type of throw in any given season. Half the starters in the NFL right now can't make that throw.

IMHO, Ryan put a stranglehold on the Heisman barring a miserable performance against FSU or Miami. His numbers weren't anything spectacular, but I thought he acquitted himself quite nicely in the last five minutes by showing he could overcome not only his O-Line, but his receivers and coaches' game plan too.

The 55 minutes called by Jagodzinski were terrible. The two 2 Minute Drills called by Ryan were absolutely brilliant.

I'll be pulling for Ryan the rest of the way, because his winning the Heisman means Tebow or Mike Hart don't, and that's fine by me.

That's presuming that BC goes on a tear for the last two possessions. Scoring yet a third time does more to the psyche than getting the ball in within your own 10 yard line. Furthermore, the special teams is where VT normally wins the games. This would include all aspects of the kicking game. I just think it was a dumb decision by Beamer.

That was a hell of a throw. I didn't realize it at first, but when I saw the replay, I couldn't believe it

I thought he made the right call there, in terms of playing to punt in that situation. 13 points doesn't get you much further than where you were with 10, since either result is a two possession margin. There are so many bad things that can happen trying a 40+ yard FG with those field/weather conditions, plus the ensuing kick off return, not ruling out the possibility of just handing BC the ball on their own 25 or better if the kicker misses.

Basically, I see it as either missing the kick or having it blocked kills VT's momentum. BC hadn't put together a drive all night, so I had no problem with pinning them deep and making them go the full length of the field. I tend to think Tressel would make the same call if it were OSU.

However, I do take issue with the call to pass on third, not because they should run to set up the FG, but rather they should run to burn another :30 - :35 or force BC to use a time out. You're third-and-8 with a QB you've already benched once this season. He's not pulling one out of his ass here. You know you're going to punt on fourth, so run a draw play, burn the clock if BC doesn't call TO, take the delay of game penalty, then do your pooch punt on 4th with 3:30 left on the clock rather than 4:11.
