Celtics: Signs point to win

By Inside Track
Thursday, October 23, 2008 -

If the Boston Celtics [team stats] don?t repeat their NBA Championship win this season, it won?t be because they took their eye off the ball, reports Green Team titan Danny Ainge .
?These guys are hungry and prepared,? Ainge told the Track at Comcast SportsNet?s tip-off lunch yesterday. ? Paul Pierce [stats] came into training camp 10 pounds lighter, Rajon Rondo [stats] was in the gym at 10 a.m. with the strengthening coach the day after we won the championship.
?If these guys don?t win another championship, it won?t be because they?ve been the toast of the town,? said the basketball boss, who won a pair of championships with the Celtics in the ?80s, but not back to back.

For Celtics? O?Bryant, a golden state

Former Warrior gets to play with boyhood idol Kevin Garnett in Boston this season

AP
New Celtics center Patrick O?Bryant, left, showed his defensive prowess against Knicks center Eddy Curry this preseason.

WALTHAM ?
When he was growing up in Blaine, Minn., Patrick O?Bryant was a huge fan of Kevin Garnett and the Minnesota Timberwolves.
O?Bryant was a fourth-grader when Garnett joined the NBA in 1995 and he was a senior at Blaine High School when Garnett was the league?s most valuable player in 2004.
?I used to watch Garnett play all the time on television,?? said O?Bryant. ?I watched (Sam) Cassell (now a Boston Celtics guard) his couple of years there, too. That was a great time to watch Minnesota Timberwolves basketball.
?I went to a few games as a kid. Being in Minnesota, you always knew how KG was doing, seeing the highlights on the news all the time.??

The Boston Celtics have extended Danny Ainge's contract and given him a new job title.
Ainge, whose acquisitions of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen spurred the Celtics to their 17th NBA title last season, was promoted to president of basketball operations from executive director of basketball operations and GM. The team did not disclose the terms of the deal.

"Danny has been a key part of building our world championship team and basketball program," team managing partner and co-owner Stephen Pagliuca said in a statement announcing the move. "He represents all that is the best of Celtics Pride and we applaud his success."

Glorious way to get it going

A lot has changed in the NBA since last season, but outside of James Posey's departure, much remains the same for the Celtics, who under Doc Rivers have a solid chance of repeating. (Jim Davis/Globe Staff)

We interrupt this increasingly interesting NFL season to inform you that the Los Angeles Lakers begin defense - what? The Celtics won? I think that's going to come as news to some of the pundits. So scratch that. The World's Greatest Basketball League begins its 62d season tonight, and the Boston Celtics are the defending champions, you betcha.

Celtics Opener: Tears From Pierce, Hunger Pangs From LBJ

By Chris Sheridan
ESPN.com

BOSTON -- There are several snapshots we'll walk away with from the night the Boston Celtics raised their 17th championship banner to the rafters -- a night, unlike ring ceremonies we've witnessed in recent years, in which the focus on what happened last season seemed to dissipate before the evening was even halfway over.
Yes, the Celtics came to get their rings. Yes, there were the requisite jokes about whether commissioner David Stern flashed a gang symbol at Paul Pierce before handing him his jewelry. And yes, there was the game finishing the same way so many Celtics home games ended last season -- the C's on the winning side of the final score, this one a 90-85 victory.
But the focus Tuesday was not on how much bling was in each ring. It was on what the Celtics -- and the Cavs, for that matter -- were ready to bring. Which players had improved most over the summer? Which team appeared more polished? And most importantly, which team was hungrier?
And after one game, the check mark in all three categories went to Boston.
"After halftime, emotions got out of the way and we started to play our brand of basketball," said Pierce, who led all scorers with 27 points after giving a prolonged, teary-eyed, crackly-voiced speech to the crowd following the raising of the championship banner. "We're going to learn from this game."

ceremony starts at 7:30 TNT...banner goes up at 7:52....lets get it on

I was there last night and the place was certainly rocking during ther opening ceremony. After the team came out onto the floor and had their pre-game warm-up the lights went off. The camera went to the hallway to the dressing room and John Havlicek emerged carrying the World Championship Trophy, closely followed by Jo Jo White, Bob Cousy, Tommy Heinsohn, Cedric Maxwell and other past Celtic greats. They entered the court where they presented the trophy to the Captain, Paul Pierce who was crying like a baby. Pretty cool ceremony.......

Pacers give home fans hope, win over Celtics

Sunday, November 2, 2008 4:00 AM

Associated Press
The Indiana Pacers couldn't have scripted it better.

Pacers president Larry Bird brought in seven new players in the offseason to improve the team's talent level and overhaul its image after numerous off-the-court incidents the past several years.
The payoff was immediate. Danny Granger scored 20 points, new point guard T.J. Ford had 19, and a sellout crowd watched the Pacers beat the defending champion Boston Celtics 95-79 last night in their home opener.
"I certainly think the fans saw a full-out effort for 48 minutes," Indiana coach Jim O'Brien said. "Nobody would say that the Indiana Pacers left anything on the court."
Well, except teeth. Granger lost his two front teeth in the fourth quarter when Paul Pierce fell on him while they were diving on the floor after a loose ball.

Boston Celtics eye McDyess

Posted by [URL="http://blog.mlive.com/fullcourtpress/about.html"]Dave Dial[/URL] November 05, 2008 18:56PM

Categories: Top Sports
There are reports that Boston, who were one of the teams pursuing Antonio McDyess the summer of 2004 when the Pistons signed him for the Mid-Level, would like to add Antonio to their frontcourt.
November 5, Boston Herald: According to a league source, the Celtics would be especially interested in bringing in the veteran power forward. The C's initially attempted to sign McDyess in 2004. He instead chose to sign with the Pistons, who at the time were opening defense of a world championship. Most observers expect McDyess to return to Detroit after the league's mandatory 30-day waiting period. But McDyess, reportedly upset by the trade, can expect to hear from the Celtics if a buyout does indeed go through.

Celtics spoil Iverson's home debut with Pistons

By The Associated Press ? 7 hours ago
Allen Iverson made himself at home in a corner stall in the Detroit Pistons' locker room, laughing out loud at "Sanford and Son" on a portable TV monitor.
"That is crazy!" Iverson said.
A little later, he was welcomed to the Motor City with a standing ovation so loud that the public-address announcer couldn't be heard.
Then, the defending NBA champion Boston Celtics spoiled everything Sunday night in Iverson's home debut, beating the Pistons 88-76.

In Auburn Hills, Mich., Tony Allen scored 12 of his 23 points in the second quarter for Boston. Using four backups, the Celtics outscored the Pistons 30-10 in the period.
"That's our job," Allen said. "If we don't come in and give the team a lift, we aren't doing what we are supposed to do."
The defending champions didn't have any trouble keeping their big cushion in a rematch of the Eastern Conference finals.

Pierce, Allen pull through without Garnett

By COLIN FLY ? 1 day ago

MILWAUKEE (AP) ? Paul Pierce scored 28 points, Ray Allen added 27 and the pair accounted for all nine points in overtime, lifting the Boston Celtics to a scrappy 102-97 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Saturday night.
Allen and Pierce were without the final member of the Big Three, Kevin Garnett, down the stretch after he fouled out midway through overtime, but still managed to give the Celtics their sixth straight win over Milwaukee.
Neither team scored for the first 2 1/2 minutes of overtime until Garnett, who had 15 points and seven rebounds, pulled down rookie Luc Richard Mbah a Moute for his fifth foul.

Brian Scalabrine: ''An irritant''
By Marc J. Spears

Globe Staff / November 17, 2008

With 45 seconds left and the Denver Nuggets ahead by 10 in the Celtics' first home loss of the season Friday night, some fans at TD Banknorth Garden began chanting "SCAL-A-BRIN-E" for a player on the bench who didn't get in. While the chants were flattering to forward Brian Scalabrine when he first heard them when he played for New Jersey, he would rather the Celtics fans cheer for the team than him individually.
