When he was growing up in Blaine, Minn., Patrick O?Bryant was a huge fan of Kevin Garnett and the Minnesota Timberwolves.
O?Bryant was a fourth-grader when Garnett joined the NBA in 1995 and he was a senior at Blaine High School when Garnett was the league?s most valuable player in 2004.
?I used to watch Garnett play all the time on television,?? said O?Bryant. ?I watched (Sam) Cassell (now a Boston Celtics guard) his couple of years there, too. That was a great time to watch Minnesota Timberwolves basketball.
?I went to a few games as a kid. Being in Minnesota, you always knew how KG was doing, seeing the highlights on the news all the time.??

We interrupt this increasingly interesting NFL season to inform you that the Los Angeles Lakers begin defense - what? The Celtics won? I think that's going to come as news to some of the pundits. So scratch that. The World's Greatest Basketball League begins its 62d season tonight, and the Boston Celtics are the defending champions, you betcha.

BOSTON -- There are several snapshots we'll walk away with from the night the Boston Celtics raised their 17th championship banner to the rafters -- a night, unlike ring ceremonies we've witnessed in recent years, in which the focus on what happened last season seemed to dissipate before the evening was even halfway over.
Yes, the Celtics came to get their rings. Yes, there were the requisite jokes about whether commissioner David Stern flashed a gang symbol at Paul Pierce before handing him his jewelry. And yes, there was the game finishing the same way so many Celtics home games ended last season -- the C's on the winning side of the final score, this one a 90-85 victory.
But the focus Tuesday was not on how much bling was in each ring. It was on what the Celtics -- and the Cavs, for that matter -- were ready to bring. Which players had improved most over the summer? Which team appeared more polished? And most importantly, which team was hungrier?
And after one game, the check mark in all three categories went to Boston.
"After halftime, emotions got out of the way and we started to play our brand of basketball," said Pierce, who led all scorers with 27 points after giving a prolonged, teary-eyed, crackly-voiced speech to the crowd following the raising of the championship banner. "We're going to learn from this game."

I was there last night and the place was certainly rocking during ther opening ceremony. After the team came out onto the floor and had their pre-game warm-up the lights went off. The camera went to the hallway to the dressing room and John Havlicek emerged carrying the World Championship Trophy, closely followed by Jo Jo White, Bob Cousy, Tommy Heinsohn, Cedric Maxwell and other past Celtic greats. They entered the court where they presented the trophy to the Captain, Paul Pierce who was crying like a baby. Pretty cool ceremony.......

With 45 seconds left and the Denver Nuggets ahead by 10 in the Celtics' first home loss of the season Friday night, some fans at TD Banknorth Garden began chanting "SCAL-A-BRIN-E" for a player on the bench who didn't get in. While the chants were flattering to forward Brian Scalabrine when he first heard them when he played for New Jersey, he would rather the Celtics fans cheer for the team than him individually.
