Bobby Bowden (dadgummit)

That's too bad. Was never a fan when he was coaching. He was a great interview, but FSU was fucking shady as shit. That said, achieved above the board or not, Bowden's team finished ranked in the Top-4 FOURTEEN consecutive seasons from 1987-2000, going 153-19-1 (.890) over that span, including 11-3 in major bowl games...winning 9 straight at one point. I don't think we will ever see another run of that many consecutive finishes in the Top-4 in the country. Even the mighty/evil Saban has dropped out of the Top-5 three times in his run since 2008.

Probably hung on about 6-7 years too long, but oversaw an absolute powerhouse for a decade and a half.

About 20 years ago I went through all of college football history, and no CONFERENCE had placed a team in the final top 4 for fourteen consecutive years.
Yes, FSU did it mostly as an independent. Yes, I believe there was more reputation than reality going on. But it is still something that FSU has done and no conference has ever done collectively, let alone any other single team having done it.

Even more remarkable when you consider the natural advantages that FSU does not have. There’s a reason that Bowden’s prime was FSU’s prime. It’s the same reason why they’ve come back to Earth with a thud. Gravity is a bitch.

will they rise again… sure

but they’ll never have a run like that again. It’s likely that no one else will either

Mixed legacy for Bawby…great coach, covered for his players way too much when they got in serious trouble, had a run that will likely never be equaled, hung on way too long…but I think about his response after the Marshall crash when he was at WV, and there’s a good man in there. Sorry to hear he is at the end.

The consistency was incredible. And, yeah…from an “advantages” standpoint (facilities, etc), to do it there is impressive. It will never approach that again at FSU. Sure, they may go on some little runs like with Jimbo (Tight Ship) from 2011-14, but even that was approaching a cliff when he bailed…and they nose dived off that cliff. They still have a lot of climbing to do to even get back to decent. But Bowden turned a nothing program into a legitimate dynasty. Shady? Yes. But still something to look at an marvel.

Just sayin':

1) I remember when that fucking "nothing program" beat Ohio State 2 years in a row here in Columbus (36-27 in '81 and 34-17 in '82). I was at both games. Besides losing, the only other thing I distinctively remember is that one game I was is sitting right under a scoreboard on the visitors side (see photo), jumping up when Florida State scored, and my hitting my head/jamming my neck on the underside of the scoreboard.

It hurt for over a week.

2) Yeah, he was "shady"; but still he got screwed over by the NCAA when they restored Penn State's (i.e. Paterno) wins but not Florida State's (i.e. Bowden) wins, etc. Penn State's child molestation violations were much worse than Florida State's bogus online music class was too.
