Bitching about the 2004 Season

This about sums up the problem for OSU...

The Buckeyes haven't topped 100 yards rushing since, the worst of which was the 27 yards gained on 29 carries against Iowa. Nineteen of Ohio State's rushing plays at Kinnick Stadium were split among tailbacks Lydell Ross and Antonio Pittman and fullback Branden Joe. The longest of those plays went for 5 yards, which Ross gained twice and Pittman once. Neither Ross nor Pittman had much of a chance against an Iowa defense that thoroughly manhandled the Buckeyes up front.
that is fucking pitiful.

As for the D - I always thought that was about looking at the other team's personnel and offensive schemes, coming up with a game plan to stop them, and making adjustments as they made adjustments. The biggest thing our D needs is time to rest between series.

Alot if this is having your adjustments ready before hand and in situations like half time adjusting to how you think they will adjust. It's a guessing game built on experience and being innovative. Thinking offensively (as a defense) in order to defeat the offense.

edit, what I am getting at is thinking "how would I attack this defense/what changes would I make..." and adjusting accordingly.

FKA - I hadn't read that, but should have predicted it.

I don't know how many folks remember the discussions that were going on during 2001. One of the biggest complaints that year was our anemic O and in particular the horrid OL play.

That line consisted of:

Tyson Walter - Cowboys
Adrien Clarke - Eagles
LeCharels Bentley - Saints
Shane Olivea - Chargers
Bryce Bishop - First team USA Today AA out of HS who never developed.

Keep in mind these were ALL HS studs.

If coaching is a problem factor in a line that is not as stellar (Datish is the only guy who had a pedigree resembling that of the '01 line) and with much less experience and disaster should be predictable.

What is amazing is that John Peterson is on this staff. If you watched Miami of O last year you know he can coach an OL. The solution is already there.

For God's sake Tressel - I am a retired SW Engineer. LISTEN TO ME!!!

I've heard from several people now that our O linemen from last year, at least the ones who were drafted, had to be re-taught technique. They apparently had to take a lot of extra work because their "instincts" and technique were so flawed. If that doesn't speak directly to Bollman's "scheme", I don't know what does. The fact that three of the linemen from last year were drafted, yet the line itself sucked ass, speakes volumes as well.

I am assuming those are reliable sources. Do you think that would get back to the OSU coaches, via either the players that were drafted, scouts or their new NFL coaches? I know we are not supposed to be a NFL factory, but we compete for kids who want to play at that next level. If we get a reputation for not developing kids who dream of the NFL it will hurt us.

Sources, yeah, right. Kidding. I'm sure I read about the linemen having to "re-learn" somewhere, and more than likely on the internet. So then I went and asked a good friend of mine whose brother-in-law is a higher-up in the Chargers organization. We asked him about Olivea, and he confirmed...he said that Olivea was a very good prospect, but was forced to re-learn a lot after his time under Bollman. He also said that he's heard a lot of negative about Bollman's "technique", and can't recall ever hearing anything good about him. I have never met this dude, so maybe he's full of it, but I heard it straight from his mouth. If he is who he says he is (and I believe it, I have talked with him several times before, and he got me tickets to the Browns/Chargers game last year in Cleveland), then you really couldn't ask for a better source.

Lydell Ross
16 rushes 40 yards
14 rushes 42 yards
21 rushes 40 yards
11 rushes 24 yards
15 rushes 51 yards
9 rushes 17 yards

On the season he was 166 rushes for 619 yards. Pretty rough year, huh? That was 2002, behind the "good" offensive line. Mo C. was 222 rushes for 1237. Quite a parity. Granted, these two are on very different talent levels. But is it wrong for me to expect more from the skill positions?

When one RB is 230 with sub 4.5 speed, hits the open hole when there is one and quickly bounces outside when there is no hole, and can bowl over LBs, you can expect him to be much better than a RB who is 210, can't find a hole with a search dog, and gets tackled by tall grass blades. Hall fared no better in 2002, nor did Roshawn Parker (Clarett, Ross, Hall, and Parker are the only four tailbacks with carries that year, IIRC). Since the other three RBs could not even approach the achievements of Clarett, that would lead me to believe that Clarett's accomplishments were a result of Clarett, and not the OL.

This is how 4 star talent is developed at OSU under Tressel

NCAA Ranks as of 10/17

Offense
Rushing....104
Pasing.....82
Scoring....93
Total.......111 (only Arizona, Utah St, Miss State, New Mexico St, Marshall and Duke are worse)
There is no way you can convince me there are 70-80 or 100 teams out there with more talent than OSU.
Hmm ... both the passing and the rushing game suck, neither the back-up running back or the back-up quarter back have turned things around. That leaves the offensive line as the common denominator. What is interesting to me is that just how bad of an offensive line coach Jim Bollman must be. Do any of the teams that are worse than us get anywhere NEAR the recruits we do? Do most of the teams above us get the recruits we do? Jim Bollman does less with more than any other coach in 1A.

To be fair here, when was Troy given a chance to turn things around? He may be losing the job in practice but Zwick is losing the job during games. If Zwick's composure is in question, maybe he shouldn't be behind the center. We all know the Offensive line is the biggest issue right now. Why not use a Quarterback who can roll the pocket and use his God given speed to add another dimension to an offense that is simply offensive.
