Bill Davis (LB Coach Arizona Cardinals)

well, he was in the right gap at least

Late. There was nothing in the OL scheme or Gaskins' first step that suggested he should be crow hopping to his left. He was a better player in week 3 last year when he hadn't been coached at all and was playing on pure athleticism and instinct.

And lets add some blame on Schiano's scheme here. Why is Chase Young going wide around the TE? He's got two DBs outside him for contain on Gaskins in the wildcat with no help in the backfield.

Maybe Davis isn't awful. Maybe Schiano isn't awful. Maybe Grinch isn't awful. But it's pretty clear the combination of the three is not working. At all.

I do know this: The LB play has been a weak link for two seasons. That position group has had one coach.

Now that I look at it, are we sure it was his gap?

Pre snap you can count 6 blockers and a ball carrier vs 6 defenders so they were in trouble from the jump. That said, either the DE didn't crash down into that gap or the OLB didn't (imo).

We had 3 guys on playing to the outside (to the boundary no less) and no one for that gap.

Defensive breakdown, just not sure it was Borelands fault

Still had a chance to make a play, unblocked, in the hole, and he whiffed. Not killing him, just pointing out the obvious.

I don't know if anyone would argue that he lacks the athleticism to make plays like that when he either fails to diagnose it properly or is put into a bad position where he has to try and cover a mistake.

I didn't see all of Dryden's post but i completely agree with the scheme issues you see in that play.

The combination of Schiano, Grinch and Davis just ain't fucking working.

agree. just not sure blowing up and replacing everyone on the entire defensive staff other than LJ Sr. is the best way to go into his 1st full year in charge with the relationships that have already been built in the '19 and '20 classes.

I agree Davis needs to go, but can't really see a case for keeping Grinch or Schiano, either. Individually they're no doubt good coaches (except maybe for Billy) but the combination is just not good.
Can’t fathom losing both Grinch AND Schiano. Where is the logic in that?

Seems like throwing out the baby with the bath water to me and Grinch is highly sought after by other teams so that says something to me.

Schiano has a history of fielding good defenses. He's a good coach. Grinch was coveted by Nick Saban, objectively one of the 3 best coaches in cfb history. Safe bet he's a pretty good coach. Bill Davis has a history of lousy defenses as a coordinator and bad units as a lb coach. Objectively, he's not a very good coach.

For whatever reason, the schematic results of the Schiano/Grinch combo has not been effective. But, i think the poor state of Davis' unit played a big part in all of it. And there's years of data to support that.

Still had a chance to make a play and keep him out of the endzone. Unblocked, in the hole, and he whiffed. If a guy doesn't come in your gap, doesn't mean you can't go make a football play. Not killing him, just pointing out the obvious.

This. This happened all year. I know we're supposed to trust the coaches and I know they see things that we don't and make decisions that we can't and shouldn't, BUT my MLB cannot miss that tackle deep in the redzone... ever. It's obviously at a ten order of magnitude difference in competition on the football side and maybe three orders on the rugby side, BUT I've made and missed a LOT of tackles in the last 37+ years and counting. He is not good at it when you look at the whole body of work. He's adequate, for the most part and then you get the whiffs. Some of that has GOT to be coaching, both in poor technique instruction and in selection for playing time.
