Bill Davis (LB Coach Arizona Cardinals)

Technically, Schiano would be the one who drops the hatchet, not Meyer. And with the new sheriff in town, it'd be the best time so Meyer could distance himself from the decision if he wants to.
But the debate, in my mind, is still the question of who is really behind the recent defensive debacles - Schiano, Davis, Grinch

I think there’s multiple issues on defense, but the lack of any development from the LBs can’t be ignored. And Bill Davis doubling down “saying I think we did alright. I’ve been coaching a long time, I didn’t forget how to coach overnight” isn’t very promising. Davis may know how to coach players that are already developed, but his biggest flaw is his inability to develop anyone during his tenure at Ohio State. Jerome Baker took a pretty steep nosedive once Davis got here. Baron Browning still looks like he’s operating on athleticism only.

I would rather Ohio State move on and try rebuilding the defensive staff around LJ Sr and Grinch than hoping Davis makes improvements. Can’t hold on to something that isn’t working for too long, otherwise the problem not only doesn’t get resolved, it has a pretty large ripple effect.

This statement makes me chuckle. Look at his resume. He has a long history of presiding over mediocre (at best) to downright bad defenses. In 7 years as a DC in the NFL, his defenses never finished higher than 20th in the league and in the bottom four of ypg in the league in 5/7 years. That is a piss-poor track record. The lousy play of our LBers the last two years is right in line with the rest of his career. He's not now, and never has been a good coach.

Definitely not Grinch, seeing as he wasn't even here for the 2017 season shit show...

There are several parts of that interview that come off sounding extremely irresponsible and frivolous, especially for a grown man whose been around the block a bunch of times.

Right. That’s why I said “recent”. Granted, Grinch hasn’t exactly turned things around, either.
I don't think he had the authority to "turn things around" with Schiano actually pulling all the strings on defense. I bet that if Schiano is gone and Grinch is the sole DC in 2019 we'll see is significantly different defense...

The ouroboros nature of NFL never ceases to amaze me. Just keep recycling same people ... staffs will get fired whole based on results, but individually theyll always land somewhere.

Some buzz on other boards that Day has reached out to Al Washington.
I heard that yesterday on "The Football Fever" Rose Bowl preview show on ABC6. That would be significant if they got him to flip, apparently it's largely because he's a good recruiter. But just the message it would send would be a big deal.

The proof is in the pudding so, whatever happens, we won't be able to judge the success or failure for another year or two. I'd be perfectly happy with Marcus Freeman as LB coach, maybe even Co-DC. I'll bet he could recruit as well as anyone, especially in Ohio.

Why? What have you seen with your eyes that makes you think that? I've seen nothing. I hear what people say, but I haven't seen it.

Grinch coached the Safeties. The Safeties weren't good. He coached at WSU. The D at WSU didn't really appear to suffer after he left. And do we really want a PAC-12 coach coaching defense at OSU? (Don't mistake this for a defense of Greg Schiano.)

I hear people talking about how great Grinch is but I haven't seen it with my own eyes. If he's the best possible choice for DC then I hope we keep him. If he's overrated then I hope Day hires whoever is the best possible choice. It's his legacy at stake and he's putting together a coaching staff for the first time in his life. At Ohio State. Better get it right because if he doesn't get it right then he has no fucking idea how intense the spotlight on him is going to be.

As much as I agree with your post, I would posit that we could hire Mickey F-ing Mouse to be the DC next year and also see a "significantly different defense". I am betting it would be not just different, but also better.

Maybe if OSU hires Mickey Mouse, ABC/ESPiN might start giving OSU some respect again? Win-win-win situation!

I have read and agree that the defensive scheme put the safeties in a position to fail.

By walking the LBs to the LOS and putting the CBs in man-to-man islands on the edge (which causes them to have their backs turned to the play on many occasions), you make your safeties singularly responsible for making the tackle if the play breaks to the second level, which means covering 10 to 15 yards and making a tackle in space, which is really, really hard to do.

My confidence in Grinch is based on him keeping it simple stupid and allowing the elite athletes to react and run rather than think so much.

He was brought in to run the Narduzzi/Ash cover 4 defense, and I would be happy to see the defense move in that direction under Grinch.
