Among tOSU fans this will be argued ad-infintum. But go to the far corners of the world..and ask them about tOSU football ..the greatest icon will always be Woody with Archie second. I think TS's college career is better than Eddies...but as a pro Troy has a lot to live up to.. As a representative of tOSU, Eddie has been great..he is what we want out of our pro athletes.

I agree with what those have said about time will tell. The biggest thing that makes Eddie my favorite Buckeye ever is his Legend grows over time. His Buckeye Spirit is still alive and well and he has never forgotten or stepped away from his roots as a BUCKEYE!! Eddie had a hell of a career, but his pro career, character, and support of the program over the years sets the bar very high for Troy.

I for one, hopes Troy follows in Eddie's footsteps and does all these things as well. He is a guy I believed in early on and loved seeing him grow. He's close to Eddie for me now, and if he continues to grow his legend after his playing days at the Shoe like Eddie did, he can reach that level as well. But for now, I have to vote for Eddie.

Some real good points here bt Stoic, Buckyle, MIller Time, and Onebuckfan. I personally think that if the BUcks had won the NC game that Troy would have been pushed up real high, but I'm not really sure that would have done the trick. You can look at it from different angles. For one, Troy dominated Michigan and was at his best in the Big Games. He's a great student, graduated on time, and has handled himself the way you'd want your student athletes to do so. The downer will always be the $500 handshake. Sadly, that will never go away. There will always be the "what if's" about the 2005 Texas game, and the season in general if Troy had been eligible from day one.

Eddie George, on the other hand, has always been squeeky clean, a real true "face" of the program. Eddie's pro career obviusly puts him ahead at this time and his giving back is monumental. There is also, as previously stated, the "aura" about Eddie. He's a huge guy physically, he speaks eloquently and makes no bones about what TOSU means to him. He didn't graduate with his class, but did come back 6 years later and finished his undergraduate work when alot of guys would have simply stayed at home and counted their money. Getting that degree obviously meant alot to him.

So, as I "weigh my options" I'll go with Eddie. It would take a truly remarkable pro career for Troy to approach, which would then turn to him possibly getting in front of the camera like Eddie and being that ambassador that Eddie has been allowed to be. I just don't know that it will happen. Hope to heck it does though, Troy would deserve every ounce of it. Peace.

I think Troy has the potential and is on the road to being Eddie's "equal", but I think it will also be harder for him. He needs a good amount of luck to be successful in the NFL. I'm sure he'll always bleed scarlet and grey -- but I'm not sure how much he will give back to Columbus specifically either. Cleveland will probably be where he concentrates the most.
Nobody will ever be another Archie Griffin (he does, indeed, excrement gold), but I think Eddie is the future Ambassador for Ohio State. And perhaps the Wolverine Killer can be his successor. Perhaps.

If Troy Smith had played today, would he be a first round pick?

About a month ago, I found myself rewatching the game of the century, Ohio State vs. Michigan, 2006. It’s a delightful game, complete with the fantastic aesthetics of Ohio State and Michigan finishing a game under the lights, but I couldn’t help but wonder as I was watching it about the career trajectory of then-Buckeye quarterback Troy Smith. The QB was lighting it up, as he threw for more than 300 yards and four touchdowns. He won the Heisman just a few weeks later. Then, just a few short months later, despite his on-field success, Smith wasn’t drafted until the fifth round of the NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens. That was what I was wondering about. How did this awesome playmaker, this elite passer, this top-notch quarterback fall all the way into the fifth round, while players like Jamarcus Russell and Brady Quinn came off the board in the first 32 picks? Why did Smith see so many teams pass on him? The answer was pretty obvious. Smith is six-feet-tall, flat, and in 2007, that was too short for most NFL teams to consider Smith as a first round pick. Despite his prowess as a passer, his arm strength and accuracy, NFL teams had no interest in a quarterback that they deemed too small to start in their league. So he fell. And fell, and fell, and fell, all the way into the fifth round. A few days after watching that game, and doing a little research on Smith, I watched as 5-foot-10 quarterback Kyler Murray came off the board in the 2019 NFL Draft with the number one pick. I watched last season as the Cleveland Browns selected Baker Mayfield, 6-foot-1, in the same slot. This got me thinking: if they could do it now, could Smith? Could a hypothetical Troy Smith, playing in a more modern offense, entering an NFL less afraid of short quarterbacks, be drafted in the first round? Through extensive scouting, and a pretty massive spreadsheet, I put together a video to answer just that question. So, would hypothetical Troy Smith be a hypothetical first rounder? You’ll just have to watch to find out.

The Troy Smith thread is locked so I posted this video/article here.

P.S. I voted for Eddie George here, however, in my opinion, had Ohio State of won the 2007 BCS National Championship Game, Troy would have been the "Bigger Buckeye Icon".
