Big Ten official allegedly tied to gambling, abuse

I think the most damning thing about this guy is not that he filed bankruptcy. People file bankruptcy all the time. That's no big deal. What is a big deal is that this guy's liabilities were over $400,000, with a lot of it being owed to casinos. Wow. That's a gambling problem. The article says that the guy never had money on games he called, and I just hope that holds up. If he did bet on games, that's the only thing that could make this thing worse.

Agreed, but I'll take it half a step further.

Any gambling debts are unacceptable for an official of any sports contest that attracts gambling interest.

As with any debt, you need to think about:
  • To whom you owe the money *yikes*
  • What might they ask you to do to make good on it...
If you have enough neurons to make a synapse you'll see that it doesn't need to be any worse than having gambling debts for this to be very, very serious. This is a situation where anyone who "should have known" needs to be fired. Yesterday.

It is not necessary for him to have money on games he called. Instead, the wiser path is to let your associates bet on the game and then collect a fee or obtain debt forgiveness for calling it a certain way.

It is a bitter enough pill to swallow that we lost that game as it is. If that loss would have cost tOSU a title shot with how bad the officiating was and with what is coming out now we would have a huge black cloud hanging over our conference right now.

Along these lines alot of WVU fans that I have been talking to online have been throwing around some stories about an investigation into some very suspicious bets placed at the last minute on the PITT - WVU game, one was for 2 million dollars alone. I'm going to do some digging around and see if I can find some more info but apparently the Big East has been investigating since the day after and has been looking into possible official and player connections. I had passed some of it off as the WVU fans disappointment over Rich Rod leaving, but this development sure makes me think this wouldn't shock me at all now.

I don't know what the WVA folks think, but in the 4th quarter of their game with Pitt I thought WVA got one call after another. As I watched I thought the Big East officials were doing there best to get a Big East team in the NC Game. WVA lost to a 28 point underdog dispite the help from every call made.

Two holding calls against Pitt come to mind. One caused a Pitt TD run to be called back and the other nullified a Pitt run for a first down in the 4th quarter when they (Pitt) was trying to run out the clock......

It was pretty obvious that the refs in the Illinois-OSU game were trying their damnedest to give Illinois the game. I still cannot forget the series of blatantly missed holding calls against Illinois on 1st and 2nd down before a ref was basically forced to throw a flag on 3rd down because Tressel gave him an "evil" eye. I cannot forget it for two reasons: the terrible calls... and, more importantly, how freaking awesome our defense is to STILL stop Illinois.

I had my suspicions then... and this more than vindicates them for me. I give all the credit in the world to Illinois, but castrate the jerks responsible for "fixing" that game.

Multiple penalties on Purdue on one drive alone, caused Tiller to literally hold his nose on the sideline.

Late in the game - with clock time being critical to Purdue's chance of staging a comeback, Purdue receiver runs out of bounds - officials do not stop the clock. Precious seconds countdown while Tiller and crew try to get attention of officials to call TO.

Others probably that I have not listed.
