The only useful solution as I see it is to increase the stipends a bit and maybe improve insurance and continuing education (they're doing the latter).
100% agree. If players are forbidden to have jobs, or are significantly limited as to what jobs they can have, then stipends need to be where the athlete can live fairly comfortably. Any and all injuries that are sports-related should be 100% covered (which I think they currently are).

I need the BTN to do just one thing for me: provide some kind of summer CFB coverage. I will take anything. They could rank the position groups within the B1G. That could be 2 weeks of 1 hour shows right there. Rate the true frosh recruits. Discuss issues like Baylor, Tennessee, the Stanford swimmer situation, etc. How about a CFB call in show? It wouldn't have to be Paul Finebaum. You screen the callers to eliminate the crazies. It drives me crazy that from late April to August BTN is a barren wasteland. I already have all those scUM games saved on DVR. I don't need to see them for the 47th time.

BTN could serve us a lot better. It's hard to understand why they would want to be irrelevant for 3 months a year.

Raises hand and admits to watching the final two games of the season twice in the last two weeks.

Even the blatant abusers and cheaters in college sports also fund a lot of legitimate student athletes who have zero or almost no shot of a substantial career in athletics. As such, the test scores and legitimacy of their majors are a very different breed.

It's a sham, but one that benefits all sides, including the kids who are being exploited. Just give them better bonuses to keep the entire charade going.

Imo pay for practice and workout hours the going rate for work study. There is no unfair advantage over Genpop and its a fair salary based on local society's economy.
It conveniently avoids that bs ncaa rule which got the boise st kid in troube for knitting beanies.

Friday night football is coming to the Big Ten.

Beginning in 2017, the Big Ten will play six prime-time games on Fridays, likely to be televised by an ESPN channel, FOX, or FS1. None are slated to be BTN. The games will be limited to September and October. And the league is committed to six Friday games for the next six seasons as it begins a new television contract.

“We have thought a lot about this,” Big Ten senior associate commissioner for television administration Mark Rudner said. “(The six Friday night games) represent about six percent of the total home games that we will have in any year over the next six years. We think it is a great opportunity for significant exposure and more favorable use of national platforms for football.”

JUST SAY NO TO FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL IN THE SHOE

76162_h_0.jpg,qitok=ywOzrzAB.pagespeed.ce.BQodd-0zdl.jpg

Jim Delany announced Wednesday afternoon the Big Ten will play Friday night games starting in 2017.

Though Delany admitted reluctance in scheduling schools with giant seating capacities, Penn State and Michigan swiftly repudiated the plan.

Gene Smith, however, told Eleven Warriors that Ohio State will host a Friday night game once every three years, but only if it could be worked out during the school's fall break.

Smith also added Ohio State won't host a Friday night game in 2017. Despite that, here are the next three games during Ohio State's fall breaks:

YEAR-GAME
2017@ NEBRASKA
2018-MINNESOTA
219-OPEN

Penn State informs Big Ten it won’t take part in Friday Night Lights

Michigan has already privately rejected the idea, the league’s commissioner confirmed. Now, Penn State is very publicly doing the same.

It’s likely that the Nittany Lions wouldn’t have been hosting a Friday night game anyway — the Chicago Tribune wrote that “the league is reluctant to ask schools with giant seating capacities to host Friday night games” — but it is a bit striking that the school would so publicly make such an announcement. Kudos to them, and Michigan as well, though, for standing up against a money grab that will come at the expense of high schools all across the Midwest.
